just got a new pc on saturday...not finished with it yet cause they didn't have the video card i want...but i can still play farcry 2 with decent settings and get a good 30fps.

my setup:
intel i7 920 @ 2.66GHz
6 GB of ram
1 TB HDD
and some shitty $70 PCI-E card.

picking up my ati 2x 4870 this week.

what games should i try?

I would suggest supreme commander, but you need mad skillz to cope with that game.

see?

If you liked Counter Strike, you will have an orgasm over Team Fortress 2. I highly recommend it. Better yet, pick up the Orange Box (which includes TF2) so you can play the Half Life 2 Trilogy + Portal also.

I also recommend Bioshock for an epic single player adventure. It's the spiritual successor to System Shock 2...pwnage. F.E.A.R. is also a great horror game that can be found for under $10 if you look around...well worth it.

I would highly suggest europa universalis: rome.

I never get bored of killing off bastards (in the literal use of the term)

+the latest (quite cheap expansion) expansion kicks serious butt. The ai is extremely good also

Wasn't a huge fan of Rome, but I agree with you on the AI; it's the bests AI in a Paradox game yet. Also, have you seen any of the HOI3 stuff yet? It looks pretty badass.

I watched a SC2 battle the other day, and man if it didn't reek of warcraft. Talk about a snorefest

you just dont understand it's complexity.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Jan-13-2009 02:05:

yeah, insta-hit mechanics and hard counters. real complex.

chess has 1, and its still one of the most complicated strategy games ever

enjoy your rock-paper-scissors

inb4 project-k's "its not RPS" (when it really is).

Go is very complex, and all units are identical

hard counters>mass enough of anything and you can win.

It's not like any non newbie is gonna use all of one unit anyway. There's also quite a lot of soft counters and stuff going on as well.

SC2 battle animations are kind've shitty though, so I might kind've agree+the people who are demonstrating stuff are probably kind've shit.

After watching a few of the replays on this site though theres certainly a lot going on when you play and has a ton of depth. More units does not necassarily mean better.

As mentioned its also really not all about hard counters. For instance pvt early game

Vultures have low health and cannot do much damage to dragoons so goons beat them, but vultures have mines which absolutely shatter dragoons. Siege tanks beat goons by a medium amount when the dragoons are clumped together (splash damage) however one on one its allmost even, dragoons can also walk next to siege tanks beyond their minimum range so they can't attack. (speed) zeals beat tanks, but they get owned by vultures and their spider mines.

Additionally, terran tends to start gaining an advantage with that matchup once the numbers on either side start getting larger, however protoss has a number of specialist units that can deal a lot of damage or cause a great nuisance. Once you bring in shuttles, reavers, arbiters, science vessals and goliaths into this mix as well you get something that is most certainly not "rock/paper/scissors"

And that's really just scratching the surface. The whole dragoons/vulture dynamic shifts when someone with really good stop/move micro can trick mines into unburrowing and blow them up before they detonate. Siege tanks are temporarily impotent while they transform, so a good player can taunt the other into sieging/unsieging his tanks and use that window as an advantage. Don't even get me started about the whole zerglings vs zealots dynamic.

I find it ironic that you'd use that as an example here because starcraft is far deeper and more complex than chess.

If you don't want to spend 6 months of your life learning the intricacies of a strategy game or several hours doing stupid stuff during battles like mining for resources, I highly recommend World in Conflict...an awesome action-based RTS war game.

16 player battles > 2 player matches
