the mix is nice, however the big flaw is that the transistions are weak, no energy is transfered to the track coming in. From listening to the mix it seems like you forced songs to blend in with each other instead of adding the correct song to the mix even if you weren't planning on using it...

Know what I mean?

Remember transistions are KEY to a mix...

First of all let me say THANK YOU! You are the first person to ever give me any feedback other than nice mix, or trance sucks.. lol

But, could you elaborate a bit on the part about forcing tracks together rather than adding the correct song. Like, can you explain what YOU look for or try to pay attention to.

Let�s say for instance that you have picked 12 songs to be in your new mix, but as you build the mix you notice that they just don�t mix well with each other or flow that good, but instead of adding in some new songs you just stick with the 12 that you have chosen.

What I am saying is that build a mix song by song. All I�m saying is your mix sounded like the scenario above.

I could be VERY wrong. But transitions are key, keep your transitions upbeat and keep the energy flowing. But all this comes in time and every mix should get better.

Yep. you nailed it. I normally just press record and go with whatever I'm feeling at the time. I try to stay away from any songs I've used in other mixes and if I end up with something that sounds good, I go with it.

I will definitely try your method. I have never tried to actually sit back and plan out a mix like that before. I just go with the flow/feeling of the moment.

I have a few more questions for you....

So, when you go shopping for new tunes, what do you do? Think of what you would like to go next in a mix and try to find it?

Also, I don't have any DJs that I know personally, I am completely home grown solo style, and this question may seem odd.

What do you do when you practice? lol

I know that sounds funny but for instance, I usually just randomly pick a starting song and then go from there till I get bored or frustrated. (usually a few hours later). But I've always wondered what other DJs do when they practice. Do you have a structured style or random style when you practice? Do you keep trying the same mix over and over in different ways until you find something cool?

I never know how my next mix will sound, I cant plan that because when you think of it, the music will set out your mix, its not you. I just look for tunes that I feel capture my attention or have that sound that many will like(upbeat & energetic) and go from there. Once I have some tunes, I start with a intro song, something to get people into the mix. Usually this involves getting a song that doesnt drag but can get you into the mood very quickly. Then I plan a set track by track, usually the songs I have set aside for a mix cant always work, so as your making a mix you sometimes have to add in new songs you were planning on using to make your mix sound good. Keep an open mind with mixing sets.

honestly I just mix stuff, i dont take it to seriously and I work on getting familiar with my music, so that means stopping songs, rewinding them and then dropping in tracks to make the transitions flow, I dont just mix for 2 hours and have a perfect mix. Same here man, my practicing is for me to learn my music and work on transitions, seeing what songs work & flow good together.

Again this falls back on not making a mix with songs in a specific order and forcing them to work... So like i was saying I take a mix song by song and then build a set.

My best advise to you is to find first songs you like (5-6) then go from there, find an intro song, see how that song is structured (energetic, down tempo, melodic, etc.) then find a track to build off that 1st one depending on the direction you want your mix to go. For instance...

1)track 1 (energetic)
2)track 2 (slow and dark)
3)track 3 (techy)
etc..

either build a mix where the WHOLE mix is fast and upbeat or make a mix where it first starts off slow and then builds to get faster.

Here are your most basic key's to mixing, and really this is all you need (in my opinion)

1. Drums/Bass (or rhythm)
2. Similar BPM (-3 or +3)
3. Same Key

Finding songs with the same sounding drums is hard, but worth it once you do, once you have found two songs with similar sounding drums make sure their bass line or rhythm sounds the same too. Then you'll have to make sure they are around the same BPM, as speeding up or slowing down a song to much makes it sound like crap. Then you'll have to make sure that the two songs are in the same key, you can slightly adjust the key of songs to work but again make sure its not to much as it will make the songs sound distorted or garbage sounding.

Notice how now with those keys you can't go into a mix with a set of planed tunes??? Notice too how you�re better off to make a mix track by track???

With those 3 simple things to keep in mind with every mix, you'll make killer mixes that only get better in time.

Others may not agree with those 3 keys, but if you just want to keep it simple and something you'll never forget, then there you go!
