X-Box 360 or PS3?

ok. I've gotten a little worn out playing PC games. I think it's time for a change. I recently (and FINALLY) bought a nice LG flat screen 50" front panel plasma tv the other day. The only thing missing, is a _____ console. That's where I'm undecided.

Things I've heard: (true or not, i dont know)

PS3:
-better graphics
-faster rendering
-slow when loading disc
-noisy fan
-super delicate (as in you drop it once, and its f*cked)
-really heavy
-wireless remotes dont last long

360:
-slow frame rate
-strong body
-get really hot
-super noisy fan after an hour of playing
-spontaneous freezing
-internal board problems
-way more expensive to repair

I'm getting A system this weekend, just because i need something else to do than just PC gaming, photoshopping, and choon shopping.

I need TA input, por favor.

your lists look pretty spot on. i would go with a ps3. i love mine. the disc loading can be slow, but it more than makes up with it in graphics and gameplay speed. not to mention all the other great things inherent with the ps3 - bluray, etc.

a few of my friends have gotten the "red ring of death" or whatever on the xbox360 and apparently it's a common problem.

I never thought of the blu-ray compatibility either, another reason why I'm leaning more towards the PS3. ALOT of people have complained about the ring of death thing as well, which I've heard requires one to ship the 360 out to Microsoft.

Honestly I could care less about fan noise, but i once owned a PC whose fan sounded like a toothpick was stuck in it and the noise was awful. I dont want the PS3 to turn into something that sounds like a mechanic shop when I'm playing, say, COD 4.

I'm going to do vast researching on both systems, but it looks to me like the PS3 might take the win. Anything pushing out better frame rate and graphics is what I'd like.

If you want online gaming 360 is the only way to go. Xbox live costs money but its amazing. Sony online is pretty crappy.

sony is completely free and works just fine. i play battlefield bad company online and it works flawlessly. not sure what you're talking about.

not to mention it automatically updates my software, i can purchase movies, games, etc.

I chose the PS3 over the xbox primarily because I don't just game. Blu-ray movies are phenomenal IF you have the TV to match it. Nothing on HD television can match the quality of blu-ray.

I say i probably watch movies more than I play games because of the great picture quality.

Xbox has the better online gaming by far. PSN is far behind but it's nothing to sneeze at plus it's free.

If you're a hardcore gamer than XBOX 360 seems like the way to go.

If you want somethimng more to do than gaming than PS3.

I use my PS3 to:

Watch blu-ray movies
Play games
stream movies, tv shows, and music from my desktop PC to my TV (xbox does this to) I'm not sure though if the xbox has as many decoders as I'm able to watch ripped blu-ray movies. Can someone with an xbox confirm this?

So basically while i may not have the BEST games, at least the PS3 for me is more of a multi-entertainment device. That aspect allows me to use it everyday.

I concur. I LOVE my PS3.

Wait it out a bit on the PS3!
It's going down in price sometime this summer, or maybe even earlier.

it's 316 or less if you have a DPA account at Dell. Rumors are it's supposed to go down but considering it's at a 399 and 499 (bundle) price I doubt it goes much lower than 316 in the summer unless they are pushing out older models. Sony already loses approx 50 bucks each time they sell a PS3. If you sign up for a Sony Card and get approved I believe you get 100 back if you buy the PS3 from a qualified retailer. Dell is one of them so essentially I believe the PS3 can come out to roughly 216. Ps3's have been floating around on Dell for 339 for the last 2 months with a coupon code.

Actually what it takes to make a PS3 costs waaaaaay less than it used to. Blu Ray players have dropped big time since the PS3 first came out. I read an article just the other day saying they are still selling way more PS2's than the 3's. They can't compete against the older system. There are big talks about dropping the price very soon - and a great amount.

Posted by maddraver on Jan-14-2009 22:17:

i like my 360, but i've had it since it came out. i only buy the same games every year. Tiger Woods, MLB Baseball, NCAA Football, Madden. i dont really have time for anything else with all the other toys i have. since you been playing on the PC i would go with the PS3.Or you can get the Wii and the 360 instead of the PS3.

Posted by sharper on Jan-14-2009 22:20:

suspected a $100 drop in April

ACtually the overheating/noisey fan/ and board problems have pretty much all been addressed in the Falcon Chipset or Later generations of the 360.

you are however leaving out one MAJOR benefit of the 360 over the PS3 (depending on your preferences)

Mother effing NETFLIX.

HOLY HELL I just signed up for mine over my vacation and sweet lord I am HOOKED. I'm going to be cancelling most of my cable premium channels because of Netflix's XBox live streaming deal... freaking AWESOME.

yeah i heard about that, i need to cancel my blockbuster delivering thingamajig!!

Posted by D Dubya on Jan-14-2009 22:42:

Be Cool!

oh, and don't forget that the ps3 has builtin wireless connectivity. i have my broadband wireless router upstairs and the ps3 works perfectly downstairs.

Posted by Matthew D on Jan-14-2009 22:44:

If I'm gaming online, I dont want a wireless connection... HARD LINE all the way!

That was one of the main reasons I installed Cat5e in my house and dropped a jack directly next to my cable jack n stuff

Yeah man, the netflix deal is totally awesome. I never watch tv but definitely watch a lot of movies. They plan on expanding the library as well which is pretty exciting.

Posted by aBigWreck on Jan-14-2009 22:54:

After looking at the netflix website I guess they already added a ton more movies under "Starz Play." Theres a bunch of newer stuff under here

The netflix streaming is nice but nowhere near blu-ray quality. Blockbuster allows you to receive movies through mail or exchange in-store for when you need that BLU-RAY movier right away. Blockbuster offers online streaming to but you have to do it through your HTPC.

Also the PS3 can be had cheaper here

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...99&sku=A1985585

316 through EPP. most people have confirmed you don't really need to be part of any company to get that price.

As far as pricing goes on the PS3. Summer is a logn time to wait for a price drop and I can't imagining it dropping anything more than 50 bucks off of retail considering the PS3 is more than just a blu-ray player. Sony makes plenty of money in other markets to make up for the loss they are taking in the gaming department. 316 is totally a deal right now. Why wait til the summer to get it for just about the same price? Blu-ray players have dropped in price but the ones that are affordable are still the ones lacking features. Basic playability but features such as ethernet or decodig processors are being left out it seems to get those prices down.

If you can wait 6 months then yeah most likely some things will drop in price but since the PS3 has been out we've only seen what? One price drop? That's a long time to invest to see little gains. Even if the price drop is 100 bucks. In 6 months time you'll hopefully have made that money back by then .

Oh if you check the frontpage on slickdeals you'll see they have some deals for the XBox360 if you plan on going that route as well.

PS3 offers HD movies and SD movies but for a cost on their network. BOooooo! That netflix is sounding a bit better. Not all their movies are availble for free to download are they?

Posted by BiGGieStuFF on Jan-14-2009 23:08:

Also a little bit offtopic but with online movie streaming becoming so popular I wonder if it's going to be affected with ISP's suddenly wanting to cap customer's downloads. I heard U-verse wants to cap their customers at 150GB and comcast wants to cap theirs at 250GB.

Granted I don't even come close to downloading all of that with all my games and movies and tv shows and music but if you add streaming movies into it where each movie is at least 2GB for standard definition, it can add up quickly when combined with all your other downloading habits.

Let's hope they don't put caps on us!

1-2 years ago the 360 would be the way to go, but the PS3 has the games to compete now and is overall more reliable. But do keep your receipt..ALWAYS!

360's Online play is better organized, but it also cost money.

I play PS3 online all the time and don't really have any real complaints.

I use to play competitively on the PC for many years, but eventually switched over due to PC problems over and over and the addictive factor of the PC is very high :x I'm very happy with my decision now though.

exclusive rights to GTA 4 DLC and fallout 3 DLC on 360, so awesome.

Ps3 for me. Love the blue ray feature and that a lot of nice small 3rd party games are on the psn. Plus backwards compatability with ps1 games and if your lucky to get a older model, ps2 compatability.
