Evil1 Things that annoy you

Here's a thread that hasn't been done for a while:

What do other producers do and say that annoys you? What do you find irritating about the dance scene generally?

I have a real thing about people confusing 4/4 time sigatures with a "four on the floor" rhythm. I see it around here all the time, where someone will say, oh I made a 4/4 remix of a breaks track. News: most dance music is 4/4, you made a remix with a kick every crotchet note

Also, ignorant people who think that all electronic music is techno, I never know whether to laugh or cry.

Bandwagon jumping and mislabeling genres for marketing purposes is another good one. In sydney right now, suddenly everything's become techno, just because its the popular genre

We all know theres silly stuff that people do all the time. Get it off your chest

Sidechain.

Saying something is electro just because it buzzes a bit.

Sidechain

Long breakdowns

Supersaws

Eight note faxing berlin type songs

Shitty new remixes/covers of decent old songs

Posted by Subtle on Jan-15-2009 10:04:

Chopped vocals, with plucks and rolling 16th note basslines.

Posted by Acton on Jan-15-2009 10:09:

I have given up caring about the whole genre thing, but I agree with Mr.Mystery and the electro nonsense because it buzzes a bit.

Posted by kitphillips on Jan-15-2009 10:14:

Yeah, genres are a whole minefield of irritation aren't they.

I think the electro thing's part of the bandwagon jumping I was talking about, its now becoming the same thing with techno, just because its got some techy percussion.

of course none of that would be a problem if people didn't obsess over genres

Really though, a lot of what was just said describes trance, so it seems like the thing that irritates people the most is just... TRANCE

Shitty mastering. No excuse in this day and age.

Posted by kitphillips on Jan-15-2009 10:21:

Damn, that leads to my next one; kicks that ruin the track.
Theres a really good producer called mossy (warning: contains 8th notes) who was being just a bit more interesting than Deadmau5, but his early tracks all had hideous kicks wich overwhelmed the track.

To play them on a big system you had to actually highpass the whole track. Of course, Beatport is such awful quality that you can't really tell from the samples

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Jan-15-2009 10:22:

Genre labels.

I think they really encourage people to make samey-sounding tracks and limit themselves, to think of themselves as a "[insert genre here] producer" rather than just a musician who happens to be using a computer and synthesizers.

Some say that mastering is an art form in itself, and it's very difficult to learn how to do properly. On what basis are you saying that it is no excuse?

I'm guessing he means mixdown.

A properly mixed track with great musical content should sound great before any mastering...

Posted by djsphere on Jan-15-2009 10:59:

no more supersaws for me please.

And this my friend was very well said, whole-heartedly agree.

I hate when people say mastering when they really mean mixing. (Two completely different things).

And of course, when people (regular folks mostly) say techno to anything that is made using a computer and synthesis.

I like elctro-house, but it has been WAY to much of it lately. It's getting on my nervs.

Posted by kitphillips on Jan-15-2009 12:14:

Yeah, people who make out as though mastering will solve their rubbish mixes and their tracks won't be good until mastered annoy me.

I just admit I'm a rubbish engineer all round

Posted by Zild on Jan-15-2009 15:18:

Like alphadave I also hate people who call everything Techno when it is actually a specific genre of dance music. My favorite at that which is probably why it upsets me so much.

^ All that. Especially the first one. If you're not a mastering engineer, you're probably not mastering, you're just running it through shit makin it louder.

Posted by Zild on Jan-15-2009 16:22:

Yeah the mastering thing pisses me off as well. Unless you have a have the proper equipment to master and cut vinyl which very few people do then you aren't mastering shit.

Just tell them that their favourite genre metal or soft rock or whatever is actually all just basically emo and irrelevant subgenres.

Shuffle on synths (unless its uk garage/grime) this +really cheesy supersaw riffs=hardstyle

Short tracks that don't really have a legit reason to be: Sorry but if you can't be bothered finishing a song then why fucking release it.

I'm about to say supersaws... but no, I haven't really grown tired of them, but even still, they often sound really out of place, and like the default option instead of something that actually suits the song.

Actually, the two things I hate the most.
- People that think that EDM is made with a push of a button.(Mostly the people with a other than EDM background.
- People that use vengeance loops in such a way, that you can hear it immediately.

Posted by JustinMead on Jan-15-2009 18:46:
