Best song to lead off a set with?
I am going to buy my first set of turntables in two weeks and I was thinking what should I play for my first set. I was wondering what everybody else thought would be for a good starting and ending track. How do you feel about deep sea by aquarius to start?
I think Deep Sea by Aquarius is a pretty dope song to start a set with....
I probably would start a set off with either Andain - Summer Calling, or Talisman + Hudson - Leave Planet Earth
cheers..
blank & jones - desire [silverblue remix]

Aria - Dido (Armins Universal Religion mix)
perfect
project madusa vs exorII moonshine (exor mix)
DJ Tiesto magik journey
To start:
Project Medusa vs Exor - Moonshine (Exor mix part 2)
or
Ayumi Hamasaki - Appears (Armin van Buuren's Sunset Dub)
To end:
Solar Stone - Seven Cities
or
Trance Atlantic Airwaves - Crockett's Theme
To begin: Alice Deejay - Everything Begins with an E
To end: DJ Encore feat. Euglina - I can see right through you
Depends on how you wanna structure your set...
If you want to start of in a high key tone(good feeling, uplifting), or steady, low key and mysterious...
I recommend Taste Experience - Highlander(Original or Endgame Mix)
or Boyd Westerman - Loop Liife(original)
I guess it depends on how hard you want your set to be too.
I don't think it has to be all dreamy and ambient and progressive. Sometimes it's nice to break the mould. If, for example, you were playing a hard uplifting trance set, it might be interesting to start with something unusual, like "Yoji Bihemanika - Ding a ling (Scot P mix)" or "utah saints - lost vagueness (oliver lieb mix)" or "flutlicht - Icarus (Daedalus mix)" or even "Dumonde - Can u Dig it". They all end up reasonably hard trance tunes, which it needs to be, but they have a nice building up start too.
It is easy to find a starting tune for a prog set, because loads of prog tunes start off soft and dreamy, and of course they are progressive so they are ideal.
I guess it's probably harder to find starting tunes for a hard set.
True. Very true.
Starting off a set with some heavy breaks isn't bad either...Sasha&Digweed's Northern Exposure:Expeditions Disc 1 starts off with a breakbeat remix of Breeder's Tyrantanic...very cool.
Before you jump on and start your session(practice, recording or even live) collect your thoughts and think about how you would like to move this set, how YOU would want it flow...the opening sets the stage for the next 3 or 4 tracks depending on what type of feel or vibe you are aiming for. After that it's just a matter of personal taste and feel or what the crowd wants.
Ending a set isn't a walk in the park either. Alot of DJs(myself in particular...terrible terrible habit) have a tendency and urge to close out with a big anthem. While it's ok to do that, it, in a way defeats the whole purpose of structuring your set...of course a big anthem will fit good as a closer for any set, but concentrate on a track that has a finishing feel...Fire&Ice's San Antonio is an excellent example...that track sounds like the 'journey' is almost over.
All in all, it's up to you and how you feel about the tracks you drop down.
dJohn, what do you think of "Solar Stone - Seven Cities", I think this is THE track to end, it just has that 'its all over' feel to it. I can't think of a track which suits the purpose better. This tune couldn't be anywhere but last IMO (well maybe second last

start of with Flash - Closing Session
start with every track you feel like(but i have to agree with Az,awesome track to begin with),but it's always the finisher that stays in mind afterwards

I've used a signature opener and closer of the same song for many of my sets.
I'll open up with the classic Carmina Burama Oh Fortuna Trance remix.
At about the 1:20 mark I build into it with a hard take me away beat and take it from their. Then work the set according to personal taste or crowd influence.
Then at the end of the set i go back to that track and work it in at about the 3:50 mark and let it ride out as the end is very soft and will allow the next DJ to choose his own set and feeling.
I'll use my sounds CD to add in a train wistle at the beginning and end of my set for added ambience of a train ride beginning and ending.

Have you ever mixed before?
If you haven't, I'd recommend worrying about other things... track selection should be at the bottom of your list (for now!).
