Lyrics suck.

Is it me or have lyrics in trance tracks just gotten plain boring lately (strike that, the last 8 years or so). I mean they have always been somewhat stupid, but in the past at least they where stupid in a way.

Seems like older vocal tracks used a lot of metaphors for things while newer tracks just kind of say it very plainly.

Example in Flesh...

quote:

The light is going blue.
Morning approaches.
The pain's still here.
I'm empty - empty - empty.

Sounds of the world,
Of laughter and tears.
I've nothing left.
I'm empty - empty - empty.

What the fuck does "The light is going blue" even mean? I don't know but its awesome!

I can't even think of an example of a bad newer vocal track, the lyrics don't even stick in your head anymore.

I mean as cheesy as it is Bullet in the Gun will always be in my head, its catchy and its odd in content and that made it awesome.

Sad that vocal trance is filled with no talent ass-clowns these days.

*edit*

I just tied this into my theory of Reason killing trance music.

Vocalists were harder to get back then. Everyone was spending money on hardware and only the people that actually had talent could afford to get a singer in and do some lyrics. Now you get jerk asses who make a crap song in Reason, get it signed to a label that accepts anything and then they get a cheap vocalist to sing their crappy ideas.

It took a serious investment to make dance music back then! Now its filled with everyone.

Democracy just doesnt work people!

What the hell has that got to do with lyrics? Or anything else for that matter?

Too many people making music and it over-saturates the market. Given that most of it will be on the lower side of 0 in terms of quality it has a negative affect. Since EDM for the most part is such a small market it is really noticable and affects the over all perception and quality of work.

Its not specifically Reason in general but for a while there was a notion of "Reason Killed Trance" but really it was the mass availability of powerful desktop DAWs (Cubase, FL Studio, Sonar, Logic, etc).

Giving any Joe-schmoe the power to make music with little or no formal training in music theory or anything even related to the concept of music has a damaging affect.

It ties into vocals in that before cheap DAWs it cost thousands of dollars to aqquire anything close to what the power of something like Reason gives you. So making dance music was an investment, even more so than most other genres of music.

Not that it is so cheap, people can go "shit i got an awesome beat" or something like that and hire a vocalist to sing their lyrics. Since they probably suck at making music in the first place, their talent for writing lyrics is probably pretty bad as well (not alaways true).

Also now that anyone can basically record decent quality sound these days their are a lot more shoddy vocalists.

Basically the democritization of electronic music has hurt it more than it has helped it in terms of quality.

Of course this is just my opinion and based off of my percetpions of trends and attitudes.

maybe if you're only talking about ratio of 'good' to 'bad', otherwise it depends on your willingness to wade through shit - the higher it is, the more beneficial the democratization of electronic music has been (for a listener).

You really think the vocals are added after the instrumental part is finished?
What I know it doesn't work that way when starting a track from scratch. And the label is the last to get involved.

Cheap like they can't afford professional singers?
Might be true, but they don't need to, because many professional singers do the vocals for free.

Or cheap like not professional?
Like the vocals by the lead singer, Lena Jinnegren, of the world famous group ERA with hits like Ameno in this track:

"Soulcry - A Life So Changed"

Most singers Lisaya (one half of Soulcry) uses are professional ones.
He just released two new tracks with a female and male singer, both will be available soon.
The female is the sister of the singer who plays the main role in the Dutch version of the musical Evita.

Back then most singers must have been busy with singing in Eurodance and some Happy Hardcore, until Jam & Spoon started working with vocals.....

I might have conveyed that, but it is not what I meant. They probably have the vocals in mind when starting the track.

On the other hand, there are tracks where the vocals have been added after the fact and that usually is the labels fault. Trying to make a track more marketable to the masses.

I think is sort of a combination, the vocal and instrumental part.

True, many examples of tracks which got vocals afterwards, or even years later. And also often really bad ones too.

woooooooo, yeah yeah yeahhh, woo woo wooooo, yeah yeah yeah, wooo wooo woooo Bobby Valentino.

When I get up all in ya
We can hear the angels calling us
We can see the sunrise before us
And it don't mean a thing, I'll make your body sing

I'll make you say

wee oo weee ooo weee
wee oo weee ooo weee

Like a cop car

wee oo weee ooo weee

Drum'n'Bass's still on the map!
'Pon the mic you can't stop me!
Flat on your back like one, two, three! Yeah!
Here we come!

Love in a woman's heart
I wanna have the whole and not a part
Strange that this feeling grows more and more
'Cause I've never loved someone like you before

Allright!

Love in a woman's heart
I wanna have the whole and not a part
Strange that this feeling grows more and more
'Cause I've never loved someone like you before

Bass drum!

Love in a woman's heart
I wanna have the whole and not a part
Strange that this feeling grows more and more
'Cause I've never loved someone like you before

Yeah!

Ahhhhhhhhhh...

Allright, crew! It's weeeeeeeekeeeeeeeeeend!!!
Yes!
We are not the monkeys, but we've got the key!
I'm the fast chatter - no one's better than me!
Yeeeah!
'Pon the mic I'm the teacher!
Spread my words like a preacher!
Cut the crap! Get the slap!
Drum'n'Bass's still on the map!
'Pon the mic I'm the Voodoo!
The destination is Zulu!
Here we come! Here we go!

Love in a woman's heart
I wanna have the whole and not a part
Strange that this feeling grows more and more
'Cause I've never loved someone like you before

Yeah!

Love in the women's heart -
I want it as a whole and not a part.
Strange kind of feeling comes more and more,
'Cause I never loved someone like you before!

C'mon!

What is essential? It's invisible to the eye! It's only with the heart, that
you can see rightly...

Yeah!

Love in a woman's heart
I wanna have the whole and not a part
Strange that this feeling grows more and more
'Cause I've never loved someone like you before

Chillybow!!!
Yiiihhaaaa!!!
Respect to the man in the icecream van!!!

Move yourself
You always live your life
Never thinking of the future
Prove yourself
You are the move you make
Take your chances win or loser

See yourself
You are the steps you take
You and you - and thats the only way

Shake - shake yourself
Youre every move you make
So the story goes

Owner of a lonely heart
Owner of a lonely heart
Much better than - a
Owner of a broken heart
Owner of a lonely heart

Say - you dont want to chance it
Youve been hurt so before

Watch it now
The eagle in the sky
How he dancin one and only
You - lose yourself
No not for pitys sake
Theres no real reason to be lonely
Be yourself
Give your free will a chance
Youve got to want to succeed

Owner of a lonely heart
Owner of a lonely heart
Much better than - a
Owner of a broken heart
Owner of a lonely heart

Owner of a lonely heart

After my own decision
They confused me so - owner of a lonely heart
My love said never question your will at all
In the end youve got to go
Look before you leap - owner of a lonely heart
And dont you hesitate at all - no no

Owner of a lonely heart
Owner of a lonely heart
Much better than - a
Owner of a broken heart
Owner of a lonely heart
(repeat)

Owner of a lonely heart

Sooner or later each conclusion
Will decide the lonely heart - owner of a lonely heart
It will excite it will delight
It will give a better start - owner of a lonely heart

Dont deceive your free will at all
Dont deceive your free will at all - owner of a lonely heart
Dont deceive your free will at all
Just receive it
