Highway Drive By... How safe Do you feel??

So yesterday we had a shooting on the subway....and this morning ON THE HIGHWAY. here is a blub from 680 new:

How safe do you feel?

First, Toronto witnessed a daylight subway station shooting at Osgoode station where a 19-year-old was shot.

Public officials are appealing for calm and say incidents like the subway shooting are extremely rare and that the system is safe.

Then less than 12 hours later Thursday night, a stray bullet from gun fire on the 401 hits the car of an innocent driver.

The shots rang out around 10 p.m. they were fired from a black suv travelling westbound near Dixon.

Two cars were hit, one was the intended target, the other was not.

A Honda Civic has had its back window shattered, its occupants took off on foot and called police.

No one was seriously injured.

Toronto Police are trying to find out just what lead to the incident.

What do you guys think? Are we in danger?? (besides other idiot drivers on the road lol)

this is not the first time something like this has happened in TO nor will it be the last.. i think the fact that such incidents have occurred in such a short span of time, i.e. Keele-Eglinton shooting, Osgoode Subway shooting, and this drive by will simply phase the public psyche at least for the short while.. a la Jane Creba Boxing Day incident

one could argue that most of these incidents are probably between known individuals if not those who share a similar idea for conflict "resolution" but the fact that they occur in such public places is will obviously be disconcerting to some..

Drive-by victims not talking

January 23, 2009
Jesse McLean, Henry Stancu Staff reporters

The occupants of the car that was targeted in a drive-by shooting on Hwy. 401 last night aren't co-operating with investigators, police said this morning.

Four people were in the Honda Civic heading westbound near Martingrove Rd. when a silver SUV pulled up beside it and fired multiple shots, shattering the window.

"It's not clear what led to it yet," said Const. Wendy Drummond. "Unfortunately, the people who were in the car haven't been very co-operative, so the investigation is moving very slowly."

After being hit, the car veered into the south guardrail where it came to a stop before the occupants got out, ran across the roadway, over the north guardrail, and vaulted a mesh fence.

They ran for help to Fitness 365, a gym on Ronson Dr., which runs parallel to the highway. There, they called police.

Two of the car's four occupants suffered cuts to the face from flying glass in the shooting. One was taken to Humber River Regional Hospital (Church site) and the other was treated by an ambulance crew at the scene. Both men's injuries were considered minor.

A stray bullet struck the mirror of another vehicle. Although none of the occupants were injured, Drummond said the situation could have easily turned out more tragic.

"We could have had a traffic fatality. We could have had a homicide. The fact that someone would do this on a busy road shows total disregard for other people," she said.

"People are putting innocent people's lives at risk."

Toronto police and the OPP locked down the gym, not allowing anyone in or out, until they were able to question the victims and get information from any witnesses at the gym.

Investigators closed part of the westbound lanes for several hours, bringing the late-night traffic to a standstill.

Drummond said investigators will be reviewing the Ministry of Transport cameras along the highway to gather more information about the SUV.

Personally...

I'm more afraid of a tire falling off a big-rig infront of me, or someone throwing a rock/brick off a road while i'm going under a bridge then being shot at while driving...

That is very low on my list of driving concerns...

I agree there are more important things to worry about when driving, but i feel like there have been an increase of stupid acts of violence in the past years that simply shouldnt be happenening! i just think you shouldnt have to be worried about a stray bullet when you have semis, drunk drivers and aggresive drivers to worry about.

i still think that TO has a far lower murder rate per capita than a lot of other places in Canada. Despite the high publicity these incidents get, with some common sense you're probably far less likely to be shot/stabbed/robbed, etc. here than you are in say Winnipeg..

I feel safe in Toronto..i am more aware of things considering i was attacked at a club a year ago..(long story and it's already been discussed in a thread)..but in general i am more worried about getting into a car accident...the drivers in toronto are much more scarier than anyone else...plus i grew up in the jane and finch area..went to cw jefferys..i'm not easily freaked out..

yeah...that is true...but we all know the reason why Winnipeg's murder rate is so high....

there should be metal detectors on all highways to keep us more safe.

haha..don't worry, i know what you meant.

Winnipeg has the highest murder rate per capita in Canada...and I think it was ahead by quite a bit.

I remember last year, or two years ago they actually had people going around in van, and randomly attacking and stabbing people...
Not to mention they also have similar problems that Winnipeg has.

Now that's scary when it is random. Majority of our violence is targeted.

random=mental

From what i've heard, a lot of the violence in Alberta is 'caused by the Natives there. I doubt the gangs there are anything like the gangs here! I doubt it's gun violence. Probably more stabbings, physical fights...or what not.

As for Toronto...i've lived hear for about 8 yrs now, and i've always felt safe. Sure there are random acts of violence, but they are exactly that....RANDOM. And things like that can happen in any city, big or small. Can't go through life always being scared. And a lot of it is gang BS. The scary part is that the gang BS seems to be moving into the downtown core, whereas before it seemed to have been staying in typically already violent/low poverty neighbourhoods. Gunfire on a subway platform at 11am and on the Highway is f'n crazy, and it will def. be 'cause for concern if situations like this keep rising! And the death of Oliver Martin and friend...who were best friends of an ex roommate of mine (the random shooting at Bathurst and Richmond when they were both shot and killed just sitting in their car at a friends condo)...that shit hit way too close to home for me..i had met Oliver earlier that day with his gf...the only survivor). That case is still unsolved, and my thoughts it that it might have been a gang initiation...now THAT is scary.

Good to see everyone in this thread isn't paranoid about the random violence that has been happening. Toronto is still a safe city.

All this violence that is happening is just the settling of accounts in the underworld. It sucks that it is so brazen, but I still feel very safe in this city.

+1

I've talked to a lot of OPP/RCMP officers and heard stories from them and they all say the same thing.

The reason why there is so much violence is because there has been a crack down, and the gangs have to fight each for territory, drugs, weapons, etc.

There are very few events where it is a random target.

There fukn mickey mouse gangs and little punks. The main reason you see shit going down is because right now Ontario prisons are jammed. The Judges have no other options but to empty the jails and let these turds out early on house arrest. Justice system is flooded with moron right now so they are trying to keep the goats out of jails. We need to put these fuk ups to work for us. Bring back the chain gangs and do something productive. Most of them are punks that don't know better. Of Course, you do have occasional loon that needs a good crack over the head with a bat to smarten them up. Toronto is mickey mouse no need to be afraid. You wanna see bad take a trip south of the border and try chi town, Miami, LA, DC, and if you really want to see hard asses hit Brazil and check out flavelas. You'll be begging to come back. lmao this thread is funny... fight for territory lol thats some funny shit... Ah the sheltered life so comfy

What idiot was it yesterday after the Osgoode shooting that was remarking how it's so much better to drive a car? Right.
