'No God' Ads, Soon To Appear On TTC Vehicles, Spark Heated Debate
Thursday January 29, 2009
CityNews.ca Staff

"There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."

It's certainly not everyone's opinion, and it may or may not be yours - but if you're a transit user in this city you'll soon be seeing that message frequently.

It's part of a controversial ad campaign by the Toronto-based Freethought Association of Canada that has been approved by the TTC to appear on buses and inside subway cars.

The spots are already sparking heated debate. Charles McVety, president of the Canada Christian College in Toronto, calls them out-and-out attack ads in a published report. The evangelical leader said he hasn't decided whether the group he heads up, the Canada Family Action Coalition, will formally complain about them once they start appearing on the transit vehicles.

The ads were used in a similar campaign in Britain recently.

The Freethought Association, for its part, says the atheist messages aren't meant to attack people's religious beliefs but to promote dialogue. And they've certainly done that - Torontonians asked what they thought of the soon-to-appear spots had a lot to say.

"We are living in a multicultural country. That's their right to express their belief," said Willy Rablora. "But for me, whatever I see, I just read it, that's it."

And George Van Luven noted, "Personally, it doesn't affect me - I'm sure a lot of people would be upset."

The TTC says the ads don't violate any of the transit commission's rules, however the decision to approve them could be reviewed if there are complaints.

The Freethought Association now plans to use the tens of thousands of dollars in donations it raised through a site called www.atheistbus.ca to post similar ads in Calgary and Halifax.

Do you find the atheist ads offensive? Send your thoughts to [email protected].

Yes! At last! I am not alone

I saw the ads in England and joined the facebook group.

I saw this on Breakfast Television this morning. About time! Now we Atheists can put out the good word... LOL! You have to admit those guys have balls. ALL the religious groups are going to have a field day with this.

Posted by exstasie on Jan-29-2009 13:48:

I don't see any issue with this at all...

It's no different than any other ad out there, or any of those other religious ads that I see from time to time on the subway...

They have just as much right to publish an ad as everyone else does...

Dunno

People always find something to bitch about these days, personally I dont care if they put these ads on TTC or any spot in the GTA.I have the right to choose what I want to follow or do with my life.Which also gives me the right to seriously consider following these ads or completely forgetting about it once I do read it,just like I do with most.Atleast the people from the "non-prophet organization" are thinking outside the box.

While I'm not Atheist, I think that these ads are good. You see advertisements for other religious organizations / things, so why not ones for Atheists?

If these end up getting taken down due to complaints, I'm going to start filing complaints about any advertisement on the TTC that has some sort of religious connection.

Really, how is an ad that says "Stop worrying, enjoy life" an attack? If it was "There is no god, blow up churches" then they would have a point.

I saw this on TV a few weeks ago. I like the "probably" part

can't wait to hear all the haters jump on this *sigh*

when was the last time you saw a religious ad in public? which one was it?

Posted by Prometheus Xex on Jan-29-2009 15:23:

Ppl have to remember that religion in one form or another has been around for thousands of years. So many times in history ppl were killed or "converted" if they didn't agree with religious doctrine of that time. The "Atheism movement" would never have been tolerated by any religion in the past.

I was calling the Freethought Association of Canada idiots..

and yes I do see it as a scam. But lets put it this way...

They're collecting atheists and agnostics together with this "movement" and what happens when you have people collectively believing in something? a religion or cult

have a look at their objectives

quote:
Freethought Association of Canada Objectives:

(i) To advance education by providing workshops, seminars and conferences on topics relating to atheism, agnosticism, humanism and skepticism.

(ii) To establish and operate a resource library for materials pertaining to atheism, agnosticism, humanism and skepticism.

(iii) To educate the public through open dialogue between groups of various faiths and beliefs on topics related to religion and secular worldviews.

(iv) To provide educational, volunteer, and counselling services for students in the community.

They are collectively NOT believing. They are making it ok to NOT believe. They are not telling anyone what they should and shouldn't think so how can they be a religion or a cult????????

+1

I see them all time. The bible study ads and other random passages from the bible, or whatever you want to call it.

The ads aren't out there to preach about the religion, but they are religion focused ads.

*sigh*

I wrote up a few paragraphs but decided its pointless... lets just put it this way...if you believe in God, you practice your faith and if not, you just do nothing and "enjoy life".

and now, it's atheism's turn to persecute the religions? (Soviet Union anyone?)

PS: I may disagree with what you are saying, but I will defend to death your right to say it

I understand what you were trying to get at.

They are trying to bring all of the atheists/non-believers together and essential through education and seminars bestow a way of thinking on life and in turn essentially create their non-religious religion...

The point of the ads are great...but the values and beliefs behind Freethought Association of Canada might not be so...

Good job... so atheists are not comfortable in just their own beliefs, they need to actually convince others to disbelieve?

Like you know... all those horrible religions do?

It says a lot.

Remember that religion is perpetuated through not really teaching, but by forcing. A child is born into religion and not given a choice because a parent will bestow their own faith upon them and not give options to other faiths to follow. An Atheist has to "break out" of the mold their parents had tried to put them into. Once the seeds are planted in the young mind, the majority will grow up with their faith fully entrenched and continue the cycle when their own children are born. This is why an idea that started thousands or hundreds of years ago slowly grows to the point where it becomes the norm. It spreads like a virus in a way. I hate to use that term since I don't mean it in a bad way... but you get the point.
