Shpongle

Anybody listen to any stuff by Shpongle? It really is amazing stuff! The intro of 'A new way to say hooray' does the business after a tonne of ganja ha.

oh ya, been a fan ever since i saw that trippy "Flashback" video on the internet a few years ago in college and it had "Divine Moments in Truth" as the background music.

Simply AWESOME music!

I find myself listening mostly to the Nothing Lasts.. But Nothing Is Lost album.

Masterpiece.

seems like yesterday that I was reading this thread, but turns out it was a few years ago!

I listen, or to say it precisely, used to listen to Shpongle a lot. I especially liked the variety of instruments they used on some recordings, which always gave them that natural and organic sound.

In the last couple of years, however, I grew a strong dislike towards that forced oriental and hippy sound and I don't know how I'd react to their new album (if they decide to release it). I wish they'd release something psy-free in the future, I know Simon has a great talent and it would probably sound fantastic.

Shpongle = Awesome.

Their second album was in the university's music library, so I took it out and had a listen. It's entertaining stuff, but I was a bit disappointed by all the psychedelic cliches in there- some of it made me cringe.

same as above... used to somewhat enjoy it, but really, it's so fucking gimmicky.

They probably weren't cliches when the album was released.

I too am a little turned off by all that would-be hippie, pseudo-oriental, psychedelic cliche stuff. Also i know some of their material is constructed around commercially available samples, i can't help but feel it's a little cheap. That said i do enjoy their music to some extent, but i prefer other projects of Posford's like Celtic Cross and Dub Trees (both with Youth), and Younger Brother (with Prometheus).

Dorset Perception

But, not terribly familiar beyond that.

Love Poundin' Sensation

I always thought that their name was "Sphongle"

Well, they have excessive amounts of hippism and this interferes with my sanity

Dedicated to all things hippy

Oh yes they were. I've got old goa trance compilations from the mid-90s filled with samples of people blathering about drugs, mind expansions and outer body experiences.

After hearing lots of adoration for Shpongle I suppose I was expecting something a little smarter.

If you didn't like Shpongle, check out Mystery Of The Yeti and The Infinity Project, which are very similar groups also involving Posford but without the cliches.

It's not so much that I dislike them, I just found it difficult to take them seriously when I was rolling my eyes so much. I also found them less groundbreaking than has been implied. To me they sound like Enigma with drug references instead of religious ones and psychedelic samples instead of chants. It's good fun, but not worthy of the hype, for me.

Enigma had a kind of unique atmosphere though huh? (When they first appeared)

When I finally listened Shpongle's first two albums, I was shpongled. Awesome stuff

Posted by nefardec on Jan-30-2009 23:19:

rather than shpongle, i would recommend:

koss - earth / spoint
koss - earth (self remix)

Posted by enydo on Jan-30-2009 23:21:

Only like their first album and Dorset Perception really.

Posted by Ian on Jan-30-2009 23:27:

the 3rd album is really good but it needs to be heard in a tired state. I was up for a day due to a 4am flight this last summer and as everyone slept on the plane, the low level lighting & the sun peeking through the clouds with allsorts of weird colours to watch, it was a lot of fun. I think i woke a lot of people up tapping away though

Oh, we're getting a new argument for mediocre music. I hope this one will also catch on, just like "you need to hear it in a club" did.
