TAMPA, Fla. Olympic great Michael Phelps has acknowledged ``regrettable" behaviour and "bad judgment" after a photo in a British newspaper showed him smoking marijuana.

In a statement released to The Associated Press, the swimmer who won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Games conceded the authenticity of the exclusive picture published Sunday by the tabloid News of the World.

Phelps said: "I engaged in behaviour which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

Just because everyone else gets away with no pics being taken when they smoke the reefer, doesn't mean they don't burn d'em trees!

Well, the millions of dollars he will loose in endorsments seems like a pretty life changing event just so you can smoke some pot.

of course. which is why he is being contrite.

behind the scenes he, his fans, his friends, etc. don't give a flying fuck about him smoking weed.

it unfortunate that guys like him can't/won't take a stand and say "look, it's time we stop pretending like pot is some horribly bad and dangerous drug. the FACT is that alcohol and tobacco cause far more harm in society than pot and it's time that governments, authorities and society in general open their eyes to that reality and focus on more important matters".

wishful thinking. it would have a great impact on this completely illogical view toward pot though.

So true as long as he wins why should they im sure he's smoked before he won those medals( not during training of course)and this wont stop him either... I also wish someone would make a stand but it may be a career ending move with the ppl in power atm.

I was originally thinking that... but you gotta think about all the children that look up to him; you can't have this olympic hero saying 'hey everyone, its ok to smoke weed, dont listen to what your parents tell you'.... not that its 'bad' to smoke weed, i just dont think people under 15 should be let in on the secret yet hahaha

Its not his job to raise other peoples kids....besides I think people don't give enough credit to kids...they are going to make the decision to smoke pot regardless of Phelps smoking it. Their friends have much more influence over them then Phelps does.

it shouldnt be his job but in this day and age where tv is supreme its hard for superstars not to. You would think that people wouldnt starve themselves to look like a model but they do it. You would think people wouldnt goto Mcd's for a big mac when they know its not good for them, but they still eat them. Kids look up to people like this. If hes smoking dope, will the kid want to try it? i dont know but it will register in their brain that they did see their hero doing something... and them doing something means its cool.

As a role model... he does have a responsibility to be a good example for the children.

Personally, I thought that 'drugs' were terrible for you up until the age of like 14 or so.... I think its better to have it that way than have kids want to start smoking weed as soon as they get bored of playing action figures and lego.

Obviously Michael Phelps isn't the biggest influence in their lives, but if someone's friends are telling them to smoke weed, and Michael Phelps is saying its ok to smoke weed, then the kids will be far more likely to smoke weed and will likely start at a much younger age.

Yeah seriously.
Hmmm, being a normal 20-something that everyone relates to because you smoke pot and are cool with it, or losing millions of dollars in endorsement income...

If he hadn't apologized to save face I'd probably start thinking that weed really does affect your common sense.
