Report: Activision CEO confirms "DJ Hero"

Mon Feb 2, 2009 2:58PM EST

Buzz up!on Yahoo!

Get ready to turn in your wireless axe, microphone and drum kit for a turntable and a pair of headphones.
That's the word from gaming blog Kotaku (via Eurogamer), which definitively confirms what had long been rumored: "DJ Hero" is indeed coming "later this year," complete with a turntable for "competitively" spinning and mixing tunes.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick let the news slip during a recent appearance on CNBC, according to Kotaku. Details are still scarce: Kotick is quoted saying that the "DJ Hero" turntable will, indeed, let you "play competitively and spin discs and mix songs," but that's about it for now.

The first "DJ Hero" rumors began swirling almost a year ago, after "Guitar Hero" publisher Activision filed a trademark for the game back in February 2008. The buzz flared up again in September, after anonymous sources confirmed the game (reportedly in development for more than two years) to both Kotaku and MTV Multiplayer.

Check out this Kotaku post from September for details on how the "DJ Hero" wireless controller is (or was, at least) shaping up, along with the early word on visuals (apparently, the distinctive, brightly-colored music blobs will stream around a virtual record, rather than down a guitar neck).

So, what do you think: Will the "Hero" series successfully make the jump from guitars to turntables? And are you ready to give "DJ Hero" a spin yourself?

*******
I wonder what type of music will be in the game. Could you imagine Tiesto in Living Room?? .

Rumor is that Tiesto collaborated with Activision in the making of the game.

I really wonder how successful this game will be.
I remember trying that Konami DJ game in the arcades a few years back. That thing was major fail.

It had it's niche, just like DDR. Some people payed a LOT of money to buy high quality home equipment for that game.

These games are mostly popular in Japan.

I'm wondering how they're going to make this game without headphones

it will be sucessfull

in "guitar hero" you don't actually play any music. it's more like your pretending.....if you screw up it adds sounds...and eventually stops playing music if you mess up too often

same thing with dj hero i suppose ;-) if they can trick somoene into feeing like they are actually mixing tracks it will be incredibly sucessfull...

Beatmania is also a game that's well over 10 years old....technology has changed since then.

IMO if it made it to Ps3 platform, theres a bunch of stuff they could do on PSN Network, with PSN Home on the way for example if you could upload your own shit to your ps3, and have some jam sessions with friends online or broadcast your stuff out to the world. If you could somehow do that with Dj Hero I think it that would be dope. Make PS3 the next social network trend.

yeah its a fun lil toy. but coming from an elitist with vinyl records like myself, it doesnt even come a milimeter close to djing. yeah it has all the bells and whistle. yeah it comes with all the equipment you need, but at the end of the day it will only remain as a game... not an instrument of music.

i still say get your self or your future kids a real wheels of steel and a mixer. get sum dubs and call it a day!!!!
