iMac vs. Mac Pro?

ive been using cubase on a pc for 4 years now and have the option of getting a high spec pc with a quad core processor and upto 8 gig ram for around 500 and continue with cubase or get an iMac or Mac Pro and move onto Logic.

Is it worth paying the extra cash and getting the mac or should I remain with the PC?

Also is it worth splashing out the money on the Mac Pro or will the iMac do the job?

a bit more info....

iMac Specs
----------

2 GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM
250GB Serial ATA Drive
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Logic Express 8

Cost: 950

Mac pro Specs
-------------

2GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM
250GB Serial ATA @ 5400
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Cost: 1,495

Appreciate any help!

Do you want to erase everything youve learned about production and start from scratch? If so, id say get a Mac, if not..why bother? Stay with PC.

Now I will post the only valid point that ever gets made in this sort of thread:

The best hardware and software is whatever works for you. People can tell you all day about what they think is best, but that might be the opposite of what you personally enjoy using, so their advice is absolutely useless except in cases where you're looking for specific features that a DAW / piece of equipment may or may not have.

ive never used a mac or logic so i dont no if ill like it or not. so someone who has used both would be able to insight into the pro's and con's of both. of course the PC would be great in terms of spec and continuing with a product ive adopted to but then theres bad habits with it so a change might be a good thing. just not sure though if the spec on the mac is worth the money. its not much better that my current pc.

Negative. I used a PC and FL Studio for 5 years and switched to Mac and Logic a few months ago. Took about 2 weeks to get familiar with its ins and outs. I can't say I know much about Logic's previous incarnations, but Logic 8 is very user-friendly and intuitive. Either way, the theory is still the same.

same, started making music with pc and fruity loops back in the days and then switch to mac and logic express 7 and finally logic studio 8. My biggest help was macprovideo.com tutorials. If you have lots of money go with mac pro, i have the same imac you mention with max ram and its great but it is getting little slow in big sessions with lot of plugins...but still no huge problems with that.

Cubase also runs on the Mac. Actually pretty much any PC software runs on a Mac if you use Boot Camp.

get a pc

I would go with the Pro that way you have slots you can stick cards into like a nice audio interface, and UAD cards, etc...

I just switched over about 6 months ago since a lot of the gear I need to use is Mac only, and so are the programs since everyone I collab with is using Logic. I was reluctant at first, but really am glad now even though it I had to drop down some cash.

This thread has the potential of turning ugly.

the imac is very futuristic design, i like it. the mac pro is a fucking old shity shit looking shit, just like stationary PCs, godamn stupid concept if u think of it really; why the hell would u need a big ugly box with alot of air in it and thousands of cables? if the imac came with a keyboard and some sort of mouse in one item i would get it, image only 1 cable from between keyboard/mouse and screen/computer, then another cable for power. then all the speakershit crap but thats another story. get the imac.
edit: btw does it have firewire? if not toss it

the iMac has firewire, yeah (6 pin IEEE 1394). The design of the machine is fantastic, and looks great in my studio. Lots of air around the machine is a good thing though, when referring to the Mac pro, keeps it much more cool. I hate wires as much as anyone else, though.

I'd much rather have the space for adding hard drives and PCIe cards.

Posted by Beyer on Feb-06-2009 21:38:

The forthcoming imacs with the i7 cpus will be blisteringly quick. There is absolutely no need
for any more power for music production. Honestly. I can manage with my puny 1.83ghz too btw.
The forthcoming mac pro with dual xeon i7 cpus is said to be amazingly quick.
And with the osx 10.6 upgrade in the horizon, that shreds some lard off leopard,
and increased multicore support - things are looking veery promising.
Hopefully logic 9 will come out not too long after. Its in its beta stages, apparently.
And its rock solid, its said - whatever that means.

Where did you read that about Logic 9 Beyer? Would you mind PM'ing me the site?

do u really need more than 250GB?

I'm always buying new hard drives and wishing I had more space, so I'm going with a yes. More important are the PCIe slots though.

i just bought a 1gb external disk, should cover me for a long time.
when it comes to PCI i dont know what u really need there, a better graphiccard?

Don't be silly. Everyone knows about DSP cards like TC Powercore or UAD-2, not to mention higher end audio interfaces that are PCIe based.

Posted by pqpedroland on Feb-07-2009 00:37:

Besides, with plugins like Omnisphere coming out that suck up to 40gb and Logic Pro 8 with all installed its 7 DVDS so 250gb is nothing actually...

Beyer: Still want to know where you read about Logic 9 beta, i've searched for it with no luck

Posted by Zild on Feb-07-2009 00:39:

Someone say Logic 9?

Zild what is the benefits with PCI audio interfaces against fireware?? Fireware is very fast too, and I think the fireware is idustry standard nowadays so you cant go wrong with it..Ok, if you have 7000e to spend on protools tdm then you need pci. And i think uad is not necesarry, theres is lot of good plugs out there.

Hey! Check you inbox! Its just a rumor that the next update for logic, will jump it straight to number 9.
I suppose the changes would be big, since they might jump it to numer 9.
They better deliver though.. Just two updates since they launched logic 8 is pretty damn
pathetic to any standards imo.

The BETTER have editable frozen regions this time! (basic stuff - copy paste - move around - mixer volume automation )

Nothing is necessary, but I was specifying reasons why I would prefer to have a desktop I can open up and add drives or cards to if I feel like it as opposed to an all in one solution that isn't very customizable.

Of course there are pros/cons going with either solution. I don't really know where you pulled out that 7000euro number or made an assumption that you only want PCI for pro tools (that shit came out of left field) because you can get something like an RME Multiface, a UAD-2, and a TC powercore all for well under that price. Again still don't know what pro tools TDM has to do with it.

Of course there are other DSP cards worth getting out there on the market I was just using a few as examples.

Again just giving reasons why I prefer a desktop.
