Review: Marc Houle @ Footwork
1...2...3..
GWARTQZ!!!!
Absolutely ridiculous night! Just got home and I'm too excited about what I just experienced to sleep on it. This has to be written now while it's fresh; I'm still wearing a great big smile.. totally going to be satisfied for days. Made it in just past 12:30 after waiting in a pretty upsetting lineup. The bouncers made sure we were getting in as quickly as possible. On the plus side it wasn't cold so I didn't mind, other than the fact that I was already being teased with the lovely basslines creeping through the front door.
I thought the place wouldn't be packed considering how spacious Footwork was last time, and also the lack of TAs confirming they were coming.. I was off by a long shot. I can't remember the last time I attended a techno jam that was that crowded. Sure, it got hot quickly, but the vibe in there was killer. As soon as I had walked in, everyone was smiling and givin' er! It was consistently like this the whole night. Lots of lookers too... tee hee!
I'm liking FW's lighting setup as of late, or lack there of! haha. Nice and dark. I Wanted to call it a night early after over-exhaustion but the party was too good to cut short. Left shortly before 5.
Musically, this was probably the better night's I've experienced since DEMF, and that goes without saying. Expectations were surpassed. Can't remember who played before Houle, but he was playing some really groovy warmup stuff that I was diggin. Marc Houle came on around 1:30 and the level of the party rose high. It was a live set, so I was expecting/hoping to hear it all...and I did! Mixing was a little bit off at some points, but the tunes were so mental it was meaningless! He opened with..
Marc Houle - Selection 12
Of course!!! LOVE this track. Magda opened with it at Demf and it was so much better hearing it live a second time. He dropped
Marc Houle - Steeplechase
Marc Houle - Flapping Around aka Dinosaur Jams
Marc Houle - Meatier Shower
Marc Houle - Investments
Marc Houle - Techno Vocals
Marc Houle - Bay Of Figs
Hearing some of his Sixty Four releases live left me in a combination state of speechless/marble loss/mindspinning/!! Oh Dear... But of course.. he had to drop it.. that song from Demf that took me places a clown would only dream of. I nearly fainted after using up all my energy jamming to it.. but it was worth it.. one of my fav tracks from 2008...wait for it...
Marc Houle - Buchla9!!!!
W-O-W!!!!
My night/year was complete after this. He played for about an hour and a half which was normal for him...and satisfying for me. I could have gone home after that (my body would have liked that) but Jamie Kidd vs. Greg Gow came up next.. Don't recall ever catching them playing together, but let's just say.. they kept me from leaving.. over and over again. I must have said goodbye to same people 5 times! haha. These guys were on fire. Relentless techno and banging minimal.. Some odd transitions here and there but damn... what a treat. I even got to hear some of my favourite older tracks such as
Adam Beyer - A Walking Contradiction Part 1
Audion - Noiser
and they sneaked in
Sasha - Coma
in there too. I finally decided to call it a night after being repeatedly annoyed by Sir Claps-a-Lot up on the stage with his Britney moves. Guess it was a sign to leave!
Ahhh... So.. I know it's early, but this will for sure be one of my top 5 parties (Toronto) for 2009. Speaking of which, I Love My Life 2009: Chapter Two took place. You can read all about it.. here
The only thing missing from the party was my family.. and more friends. But it was great to see a few!
Thx again Platform!
man that was quick to put up the review...must sleep first for me
the drive back sucked, so dark out w/o the moon!
I'm at work, hungover, servicing all of 13 CIBC branches in Canada for mortgage support. I wanted some pumping techno/minimal last nite and I got it with full force. I think I've heard like only 2 of Marc Houle's productions before but it didn't matter. Mostly good vibe last nite (except for this one dude) and yeah there was a lineup outside but it moved quickly and the music was pretty damn good. I have no idea what was played but it was what I wanted. Obscure danceable techno.
I think i'm gonna pass out now!

last night goes in my top platform parties. I was surprised there was a lineup when i arrived
Toronto was buzzing last night...took me 30 mins to get from the gardiner to FW
The first 2 djs were doing a great job to warm up the place. not sure who they were ( guy in white v shirt and the one be4 Houle). By the time houle got on, the place was in full force and it was hot!!
As soon houle hit the decks, the place erupted! his set was simply amazing. He proved that minimal isnt boring!! I wish he had played more than 1.5 hr...but its a live act after all
Gow and Jamie kidd were on FIRE after Houle, oh my!! Hard pounding techno
Footwork never disappoints!
I brought a first-timer to Footy with me and she had a fuckin blast. Whoever was on the decks early was doin a decent job of warming us up, but hot damn did the vibe change when Houle took over! Danced hard for most of his, and called it a night around 3.
The crowd at footwork, as always, had a wicked vibe and were lovin the music. Even though it was getting pretty crowded in there, everyone was being respectful during their trips around the club. What can I say, it was just another awesome night at Footwork!
Only damper on my night was realizing that someone had broken my back driver-side window to steal stuff from my car. I knew I should have just left it unlocked, I don't have anything worth stealing, I don't even have a fucking car radio in the thing! Oh well, the night was awesome anyway and the small cost to repair the window won't ruin the night in my memories
FUCK ME
didnt end up making it out to this due to a wedding commitment, I'll probably be shooting myself in the foot for the rest of the year after reading the reviews & seeing the pics.....

I thought Mark Houle was on around like 12:30 or so after the guy with the white shirt... guess not! Did the guy playing from 12:30-1:30 look like Mark Houle or am I just going crazy?

| Originally posted by heavenisblue I don't think they looked alike but a lot of people were just as confused as you. I had never seen Marc Houle before and I had no idea what he looked like. I knew he was supposed to come on at 1 and someone said oh look he is on early. I was a bit confused so I asked at least 3 other ppl (who I thought knew what they were talking about) and they all told me it was Marc. I thought he looked a little bit young, or at least younger than I thought he would be. But when I heard Selection at 1:30 I knew that Marc was actually on then. |

If a party is good, who has time to text?
Didn't make it out for various reasons, but looking forward to Cari in a few weeks.
Anyone have any photos from the event? I always see photographers at FW but I never know where those pictures get posted???
ahhh cribby, i always love your reviews!
last night was fanfreakingtastic. i'm really glad i decided to un-hibernate for one night. music was great from the beginning to when i left, total GT's! although i got stuck in the sketchy corner at one point on the right hand side of the room (i usually gravitate towards the left for some reason, but it was too crowded to go there) and DUDE...some of those people shouldn't have been let out in public.
now, back to hibernating.
