How do you avoid neck pain?

Hey guys. I'm wondering how you guys avoid neck pain while producing. Sitting at a computer for hours day in day out is really starting to bother my neck. I take a lot of breaks but my breaks seem to be watching tv (sitting), or reading or something (also sitting). What do you guys do to avoid neck pains or a sore back?. right now my neck feels like it's on fire. I'm going for a walk!!

Don't produce for hours and hours. Many artist I know with an album or two work for a few hours on the week ends, that's about it..lol

rub one out. it'll get your juices flowing.

Neck pain huh? Never had that.
It's my ass that starts hurtin.

the sound bouncing off the walls attacks the neck. hurry get acoustic treatment for your room.

Take frequent breaks.
Make sure your screen is high enough.
Don't lean forward in your chair.
Swim - a lot.

I have the same problem, i've noticed that since i have began producing my neck always hurts especially when turning around my head. I think it's about the right proportion between your chair and the height of the table. And of course, the screen should be positioned as high as possible. You can see this in many studios.
Btw you should also care about the amount of fat in your ass haha

go to a doctor

Make sure you have a good ergonomic chair if you spend alot of time at the computer. Also try and sit as up-right as you can in the chair.

get a better chair and also consider standing up while jamming once in a while (if u have a higher desk on the side for example). most important work out.

this is fucking wrong, your eyes should rest between 75-90degress!!! no wonder u have problems man.

also your legs-ass-back angle should be 90 and you should have both feet solidly placed on the ground. try focus on pushing your chest forward and adjust your chair after that. dont be a caveman.

i work in an office 8-10 hours aday then when i come home i sit infront my own computer for 3-4 hours. i dont have any problems with it caus we had training at my work on how to sit properly. rule-of thumb is 90 degress in all angles.

another great tip which i do at work but not at home is to have a bowed desk so you can rest your arms good on it under your elbows. this is a huge help for people with mousesicknes.

Stand the fuck up and dance. This is dance music ffs!

lots of good advice, i moved my set up around a bit and got a new office chair, seems alot better. if you saw what i was sitting on before you would laugh. a costco fold out chair !!!

Posted by jupiterone on Feb-11-2009 06:01:

never have them

probably because i'm stoned every time i produce

so that's my only solution to your problem

1. make sure the TOP of your computer screen is around eye level. you should always be looking downward at your monitor.
2. buy a better chair.
3. if your desk has a keyboard tray, sell it and buy a bigger desk that allows you to rest your arms on the table-top. this forces you to sit upright, whereas you hunch your back if you have a keyboard tray. keyboard trays are very bad for your back... despite the fact that they are marketed for improved ergonomics lol.

So true, and if you have legs as big as mine the runners on the kbd tray will shred your knees.

the screen height is about keeping your body line straight. You can look up but don't use your neck. That is what causes most neck problems.

glad this thread got bumped, will rearange my desk a bit, mostly cause my monitor is quite high and i have been having a bit of neck and upperback pain

more time in front of the comp lately... good and bad

Well, I am a registered nurse so I can give you a bit of advice but it's not rocket science.

not sure if you exercise, and it sounds silly to exercise for producing, but exercising will help a ton. it is the most commonly *recommended* and *effective* treatment even in today's society.

You obviously need a good chair as others have mentioned. Find a store where you can sit in them and check them out. The more cushion the better, and you want something that adjusts up and down so you can look down on the screen, and then drop the chair down and angle your head up.

What I find very helpful is I use two computers for production. They each serve different purposes and that would be something you would have to decide and adapt to but I have what I call my "bed top" where I do most of my task work like answering emails, etc. I also bring my controller to the bed and will do some sound engineering with my soft synths, etc.

Hope this helps

Take small breaks regularly. It's not only good for your neck/back/whatever is hurting but your ears as well.

Posted by johncannons1 on Oct-12-2009 04:02:

ive never had it but i find my back can get weird if i sit for too long..

try stretching.

dont EVER roll your neck 360 deg.

put pressure on your head forward push your palm against your head and push your head slowly forward with really LIGHT pressure do this for 10 secs or more. do left right front and back.

we used to do this for football and it worked a treat
