This is an idea for a mix that I came up with a few weeks ago. I wanted to create a mix that contained dance elements, but I also wanted to someone use some of the modern classical / minimalist compositions that I have been listening to. As you can imagine, the mixing wasn't fantastic, as it was a bit difficult to go from techno to a light piano or string.

I know many of you have heard the dance tunes before, but they were tunes that I have really enjoyed over the last few months and I wanted to use them. Hopefully I can at least introduce some of you to some non-dance music that you find enjoyable. Thanks to Rob for introducing me to Blow It and I Can Forget.

Back with feedback later.

Of course! To paraphrase the perennial montana quote, finding good music and sharing it with people is just what I like to do.

Also... Jaidene Veda

You know, I thought I was leaving out one track, and Sunday was the tune.

Interesting sounding concept, I'm in.

huge file size is huge.

would be interested to hear how you reconcile the ironic dancefloor music with serious ambient music - was your intention ironic?

though some of the producers there (like efdemin) have a classical background. efdemin studied electroacoustics in university

interestingly enough i just recorded a concept mix two days ago for my proton radio show which contains a lot of modern classical and ambient bits

sad nefardec is sad.

My intention was to put together dance tunes that I really like with more ambient music. Nothing more. I'm not trying to make a statement. If you want me to make a statement it will be about how to design a database, or Service Oriented Architecture, or proposals for IT to adopt a green initiative to raise their bottom line. You are a hell of a lot more educated in music than I am nefardec, and you put together some really good mixes too I might add. As do others that have posted in this thread.

I did know that tidbit about Efdemin. I watched his Red Bull interview and found it really interesting. And really awkward.

I just hope you find a few tunes that you hadn't heard before, and really enjoy.

you know you could, though, right? you don't have to go to school to be expressive I don't know what it is about this aversion people seem to have in dance music with making statements or being 'too serious'. anyways i was just curious. i don't know many of the tracks so i will listen when i can get to a faster connection.

efdemin is a strange cat

I agree that statements can be made in dance music. I fully agree. I also don't think that I'm being 'too serious' (not that you are saying I am, just raising attention to the point) as I wanted to do something a little different from what I had done before.

This mix is a result of influences. Influences from my own music discovery, and influences from people like you, Clovis, Rob, Adam, and the list goes on. I'm a lurker, I listen to a lot of music that gets posted in the DJ Promotion section.

As strange as Efdemin's interview was, I really enjoyed it. He makes a lot of great music, and has a lot of interesting things to say.

Looks like it's up my alley, especially the modern classical (even if I'm incredibly familiar with the modern classical tracks that are on this ).

Downing.

I'd appreciate any feedback, even if it is horrid.

I actually found this a real pleasure to listen to. Lovely and yet diverse. I really like that you're not afraid to try something a little bit outside the square and not conform to what many DJs would expect a set to consist of, by that I mean really beat based music that most consider dance music. I really think you've pulled this off well, and I'll be giving it more listens down the track too. Well done.

Thank you for the kinds words.

Also, I signed the petition.

I'm really gonna try and give this a listen.

I've been so lazy about DJ Promo stuff lately though that I may not get back for a while, dance music has been kinda stagnant for me lately. This really does look nice though.

Justin I must say, I am listening to this right now and its some really good shit! I'll edit with more detailed feedback once I've had a full listen but the track listing has me excited for the rest.

Posted by Ted Promo on Feb-21-2009 02:43:

Pretty good. I remember some of the placement feeling a tad off for me at points, but the music was enjoyable overall. I'm rather familiar with this music so it wasn't incredibly new for me, but definitely had me vibing

I agree, the placement was off at times. At points it just didn't flow. It got better towards the last 30 minutes.

Had you heard the interview with Mr. Martin before?

Thanks for giving it a listen TP.

This was a very nice listen. Flow seemed to be interrupted at certain points, a transition near the beginning and a few near the back were a bit jarring to me (mostly coming out of dancier stuff into the more ambient pieces), but nothing too serious. Mixing between the tracks seemed very solid and I really liked the classical / ambient stuff as a kind of backdrop here.

I felt on the whole you did a good job using those pieces to set a kind of tone and then using that vibe and energy to go into the more dance oriented stuff. Personally, I wouldn't tackle something like this because I wouldn't know how to handle the flow, but I think you pulled it off quite nicely. Dance music and classical type music don't mesh very well, at least to my ears, but I think you did a good job of putting the two together.

Justin I'll be honest with you in saying that I only listened to the first hour and a half thus far - it is a long mix. The reason for that, however, is that when the groovy parts were on, I was really enjoying jamming to them. You actually threw some brilliant tracks in there, especially the klezmer-like one (2nd or 3rd track). You see though, those parts which I was really enjoying would end and the slow stuff would begin. In terms of your transitions to and from the slower parts, I actually think those were excellent. The problem is that I was getting so into the groovy parts, that when the more ambient stuff came on I was like "man, I really wanna listen to that other shit he was playing". And it was a little irritating, because I knew the bounciness would be coming back, but I didn't know when, and those more drifting parts ended up being a lot longer than I expected.

So I will for sure listen to the rest, I'll tell you that, but I also really wished that you kept one part for the beginning and one for the ned, rather than going back and forth. Obviously that was the intention- to construct a varied sound scape, but I felt that you could have done so more successfully (or at least more coherently) by placing some of the tracks elsewhere in the mix.

Keep it up though, your track selection and mixing are nice.

Cheers

thanks for the feedback adam. I think I could have tackled it by doing a "cd1" and "cd2" of each style of music, but I wanted to try getting the two tangled up and seeing how it turned out. thanks for listening.
