getting dj sets in montreal

i've been grinding to get sets going in montreal, all of the people who i go up to with my promo cd's go about saying they expect the djs to pull out a guest list; that the dj gets paid a % for the amount of people the dj can pull out.

any of you heard of CoCo Entertainment ?

i met this girl at a party who does some business with coco she mentioned i make up something fresh.. pass her the demo which will be put on a pod cast. something about if these clubs like your sound from listening to the pod cast, they hook you up.

i spin progressive house but i don't mix any of that rhianna shit or robyn S into my tracks.

i have a set i play in toronto every couple weeks but its not enough.

im grinding to get sets going in montreal.

i've met people who talked shit saying they know people in tribe, circus, time... list goes on. just a bunch of guys talking shit trying to give themselves an image.

my promo cd is decent. beat matching is down. always buying new tracks on the port to keep the library up2date

im not about doing the bedroom dj. im addicted to the adrenaline pumping when im playing to crowds.

yeah thats what im out there working on. but after a while it just gets to a point where you hit the decks and you can't find your drive since there is no opp. coming your way.

well, it's definately not easy... there are a lot of djs in montreal, but you have to remember why you got into this in the 1st place.

Well this is just step 1. Having a nice demo and keeping yourself up to date is the minimum a DJ can do. Montreal is not a big market, a LOT of good DJs here, a lot of them would deserve to play way more.

Plus, I can assure you that if you are not knowm for producing, you will never play outside your city. I guess I can say I am fairly known in Montreal, and I never got booked in T.O. It's sad, but nobody gives a shit about a DJ.

Clubs don't care. If you do not pull a crowd, they couldn't care less if you play Ryana nor whatever crap or non-crap out there.

So basically, put up your sets online in the mtl section, maybe some people will dig it, and if you have some sort of nice hype going, somebody will maybe book you. That's how I got to play in Ottawa... But again, have fun, build a strong network in your hometown, and slowly build contacts outside.

welcome to montreal
welcome to djing
i hope you enjoy your stay

Most DJs I know started playing for friends in private parties or after-parties of big events ...for free...for fun...eventually, someone says ''dude we have to do this in a club''! Once you have a large enough network of people that will want to 1) promote your gigs and 2) go out to hear you play cauz they like spending time with you and like your music...then you can start thinking about clubs.

The best way to get a gig at a club, is to come in with your team, propose a concept, take some risk at the beggining. If you just drop a demo with good music, that's not worth shit.

Eventually, when you are well-established, other promoters or clubs will come and book you without you having to work as hard to bring people.

Another good thing to do is to get the attention of a well-known DJ. You can become his padawan and open at his gigs and such...

But yeah, if you don't have any friends or contacts...forget about DJing.

just keep doing what you love and keep working hard it will eventually happen.

don't loose that drive and don't get discouraged this is a hard industry to break out into

Have sex with the right people. Mostly men.

first you can't figure out how to use logic

now you want a gig

Posted by Big Boss on Feb-13-2009 18:05:

You want to enter the scene and play on your terms even though there are many established Montreal DJs that have trouble getting gigs because the competition is tight. Interesting logic.

Posted by djmalek on Feb-13-2009 23:36:

It is not only a question of contacts. It is also a question of how many people will you be able to bring with you to the club. The club or bar owner doesn't care what you play as long as you are able to fill up the place and bring $ in. So yes you have to be a dj AND A PROMOTER: you will also have to spend time and sometimes money (promo CD, flyers,...) in promotion to be able to get gigs.

i guess.

Posted by elFreak on Feb-14-2009 00:38:

i don't, businesses are there to make money, not showcase talent. Sometimes talent is showcased but that is incidental and secondary to paying bills. It sucks, but such is life.

what's sad dude it's a business. If you owned a bar would you be like ''ok dude I like your music a lot so I'll book you even though you are a nobody coming out of your mom's basement...I know you can't bring me people because you don't know anyone, you are 18, but that's cool...I really like your music so I will put in all the efforts myself to make sure people discover you and come to my club''?

Here's a quick success story for you though: I remember 3-4 years ago, King Richard...he was 19 years old...spinning at Sofia's part time and studying at Mcgill...the kid was so talented that balroom hired him right away when they heard him spin at the restaurant one night. Even back bthen he was able to draw a small McGill crowd. 4 years later, tons of people only go to Balroom on St-Laurent because he is spinning there.
But trust me, he's got mad mixing skills, top notch track selection, he looks pretty good, interacts with the crowd, and even does his own mash ups and productions.
Richard was mixing in his basement countless hours every week so he became really really good....but he is also extremely talented..more than most DJs I know.
Since he started at balroom he spent some time with Vivie-Ann and now he is producing with Danny Torrence...

why is it sad?? how is the guy supposed to pay the rent and employees?

Posted by Dj Nacht on Feb-14-2009 02:09:

If someone really truly does have talent and is not lazy I believe the hard work will pay off eventually. Also just because you buy the latest tracks on beatport don't think people will come after you for booking. Beatport is like Mc Donalds.. cheap and easy food, if you want that good unique stuff you gotta go elsewhere.

Go ask Vartan if you could spin at Chill on Thursday, lol...
