im going to florence, any recomedations?
For spring break im going to florence, wondering if anyone can give me a few things to do? I know to go see the david...and ummm thast about it. I would ask Eco what to do...but uhh didn't he get into some trouble in Italy?? heh
I didn't find much to do besides the david etc myself with my friends, we were there for a few days and it's not my fav city in italy honestly.
however..you can pick up a quality leather jacket there for a bargain price, so you can take advantage of that while you're there..
and it's still a decent place to chill
wow...way to shoot my whole trip to shit
I spent a few days in Florence last summer. I enjoyed florence more then Rome or Venice.
There is the David

The view from atop The Duomo is amazing

You are in paradise if you like to shop, check out the ponte vecchio (bridge in the background)

The food is Amazing, eat as much as you can and order the tourist specials that allow you to sample many different things.

The best thing I did while in florence is hop on a tour bus and go wine tasting through tuscany and chianti. For about $97 USD on expedia, I got a package that included everything as well as a nice dinner in a tuscan village to cap it off. I would highly reccomend it for a wine enthusiast or not.
tuscany vinyards

Hope this gets you excited for your trip, enjoy it!
I am not sure of your intentions for this trip but you are planning on going to the historical Mecca of Europe where the Renaissance age was born. Therefore my only suggestion to you is to do some serious homework, like all smart travelers do, if you're intending on going there for the right reason.

I had possibly my favorite meal in all of Italy while in Florence. You have to try this place called the Teatro del Sale.

You have to pay a tiny membership fee to get in, and it's a flat ~25 euro for dinner, but that gets you something like a 6 or 7 course amazing dinner, tons of great wine and coffee, and an incredible post-dinner show which changes every night. Apparently sometimes they put on plays--on the night I went, it was this crazy Mexican/Italian/Surfer band who closed out with the song from Kill Bill 2's end credits (remember this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6I3t...feature=related)
So, check that out before you leave!
Also, don't underestimate David--this sounds so over-the-top, but it was the most beautiful work of art I have ever seen: better than anything I had seen in Paris, better than the Vatican and Rome, better than any modern art in Berlin or anything in London. I wasn't prepared for how stunning it would be. So plan to get there early (there was almost an hour long wait by 8AM, and plan to stay for a while just to sit and study it).
Also, don't forget that Pisa is incredibly close to Florence and accessible by inexpensive local buses, so you can go and check out the Leaning Tower if you're stumped for anything else to do.

I'm studying in Florence this semester (from Indianapolis). When are you coming? I'd be happy to show you what I know.
Here, I'm studying painting and sculpture, and also the best places to go at night ... for the most part I've found that the clubs in the center of Florence are really disappointing. A lot of them have "DJs" but really it's shitty mixing of popular american music, a lot of drunk American kids, and horny young Italian (and Albanian) men.
This isn't to say nothing good happens in Florence at night. I'm in love with the jazz club, which is around the corner from me, really low key, with a teensy membership fee (8 euro) and great live music every night.
There's also ArtBar, with beautiful drinks - expensive on the weekends, but during the week there are good specials. The atmosphere is chill and not so sex-driven as the place you'll find right in the center ... unless you're into that, I'd stay away or you'll just be disappointed.
And of course, there's Tenax (aka TNX), the best discoteca in Florence for SURE, and probably all of Tuscany as far as that goes. I saw Jamie Lidell on a Thursday night, and two nights later, Konrad Black, Seth Troxler, and Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts. I had a blast! I'm going back this weekend for Troy Pierce and Prik. I think there's something going on there every weekend, but I'm not sure what.
This coming week is my spring break, and since there isn't always a lot going on in terms of electronic stuff in Florence, I'm considering heading to Rome on Tuesday for Josh Wink.
Let me know when you're coming and I'll see what's going on in terms of night life. As far as I know, I'm the only one into electronic music in this whole program (150 students ... yikes).
wow, this is the kinda response i have been waiting for. im going to be there from the 12th to the 20th....so in like 2 weeks...i can't fucken wait im so pumped. that jazz club sounds amazing. im goign to visit a few people who are studying abroad from syracuse university (have you met anyone from there yet???) so i won't need a guide, but we will deffinatly have to meet up.
I'm glad I could help! My roommate is from Rome, NY and I've met some others from Rochester, NYU, and Brooklyn, but I don't think I've met anyone from Syracuse. It's good you have some guides to help you out; since they're studying in Florence they'll be able to show you what is going on.
I'll be visiting Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Naples from the 13-15, but if you want to meet up, I usually go to the Jazz Club on Tuesdays and Wednesdays - Tuesday is a blues jam session, and Wednesdays is a jazz jam session. Both nights are worth your time, in my opinion.
You should be excited! Come hungry. Pizza is good and cheap. So is wine ...
