Mystery book recommendations?

Lately I've been enjoying those campy British mystery movies and want to get into the mystery genre of reading more. Any recommendations? I come from a fantasy/horror mainly background with fiction and was wondering if the Sookie Stackhouse books are any good? Should I stick with the classics like Agatha Christi?
