One of the better purchases I've made in my life

For those of you Sega heads out there, pick this up. Now. ALL the Phantasy Stars, ALL the Streets of Rage games, Shining Force 1 and 2, ALL the Sonics, plus other gems such as E-Swat, Altered Beast, and Gain Ground.

And that's only half of it...there are about 50 games on this disc. It would have been beyond sick if there was online multiplayer added to it, but alas, these are straight ports. The emulation is flawless though, so the package deal is nothing short of excellent.

I bought it for PS3, but there is a 360 version as well.

he, that's the only way you'll get to play a decent sonic game!

Posted by CONNERMAN2000 on Feb-16-2009 03:24:

So true. I really liked Sonic Adventure, but ever since, the franchise has turned to utter shit. It's really too bad; as a kid, I was more of a Sonic fan than a Mario fan (though I loved both either way)

This is the best reason to own a console that I've seen yet.

Posted by KiNeTiC ENeRgY on Feb-16-2009 16:19:

I guess this is good for people who don't know how to use emulators, but all the games can be had easily and played on a number of consoles and PC. I have a disc for Dreamcast that has almost the entire genesis library on it. Plays perfectly.

Posted by Mr Game+Watch on Feb-16-2009 19:09:

I wouldn't call ESwat and Altered Beast "gems"

Definitely worth it for the Phantasy Star games though - best game series ever!!!

Hey, Altered Beast taught me from a very young age that WINNERS DON'T USE DRUGS.

Michael Phelps being an enormous loser in life, obviously.

Pfft, what's a sega collection without Landstalker?

Collection phails.

I also have a disc like that, but there are a few problems...

1. The menu is a simple, DOS-based text list that is about as un-user-friendly as possible. It's just one long list, and you can only scroll one at a time, and it always starts at the top. So if you want to play Shining Force, you literally have to spend a good 5 minutes scrolling down to get to it.

2. The save functions are completely unreliable. Started a game in Shining Force, only to find out that the save file didn't save after all. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. The lack of consistency makes it pointless to risk starting a game in an RPG when it's possible it won't save. Not a problem with this package.

3. The PS3 (and 360) version of these games have been polished off with HD graphics, not to mention trophy support. Maybe only a small bonus, but when added with the above mentioned, it makes this package worth buying if you ask me.

And I'm not big on emulators on PCs...I remember playing these games on a console as a kid, and that's how I want it now.

Well, they are gems to me, if only because I loved them both as a kid. The nostalgia effect goes a long way in my book.

In the end, there was no need for the D.A.R.E. program, we already had Altered Beast.

I consider myself a big Sega nut, yet I can't seem to remember this game...?

Try another disc/compilation for the DC mate. One I have allows u to jump through pages at a time using the triggers, and I never have any issues with saves. I agree about the emulators on the PC, but u can even get NES controllers to use on the PC. There's almost nothing that can't be modded/hacked these days. You can use the new dualshock 3's for windows games, but through usb only for now. All u need is to download the drivers and it works great.

Wow...great compilation.

Connerman, Landstalker is an AWESOME isometric platformer, extremely challenging but a lot of fun. Definitely worth checking out, it's on Wii VC I know for a fact.

If they would've thrown in the sonic for dreamcast I would've gotten it for sure

I'm not sure why the Adventure games have been largely ignored ever since their release. The inclusion of the original would have been extra win.

Hmm...I'll have to look into it. The whole isometric aspect didn't work too well for Sonic, as I didn't really find Sonic 3D Blast to be much fun, but that doesn't mean a different developer can't get it right.

1. You won't believe this. I just popped in that disc, and sure enough...the triggers end up scrolling the list by letter rather than by every single game. Wow. Guess I won't need to do a search for another one after all!

2. I know there are controllers/gamepads you can pick up for the PC, but its the fact that I don't want to sit at my computer to play these games. I like the fact that my roomies and I can all chill by the living room TV in a big space, and play some good ol' fashioned Shinobi. And I don't want to hook up my computer in the living room.

Landstalker is Sega's answer to Zelda: LttP, except with JUMPING!

Really one of the best adventure games of ever. Alundra is essentially the sequel to Landstalker if you've played Alundra, just Landstalker is Isometric, what with it being on an inferior system to PS.

Posted by biznology on Feb-18-2009 08:25:

supposedly most, if not many of these will be available individually per XBLA...

we shall see, it may just be the sonics|

Posted by Omega_Blue on Feb-19-2009 03:38:

what about beyond oasis, general chaos, shadowrun? wtf

i'd take a soft-modded xbox with all of the old consoles in one package over this any day. until modding/homebrew for the next-gen consoles starts improving i'll stick with pc, xbox, and ds.

General Chaos (one of the best games ever) I can see, but were the other two really all that popular, commercially-speaking? These packs usually contain games that sold really well.

Holy crap I used to play General Chaos with my friend for hours. Amazing game.

Absolutely. It's a game that definitely needs a remake or at least a re-release on Live/PSN. With online multiplayer...holy shit, that'd be awesome.

I have this one, and is really great to re-live the games i played in the 90s. I expected more unlockable master system games, but it's ok.
I hope for downloadable content with more games.

Why are not Sonic 3 & Knuckles? (The union of these two games via the Knuckles cartridge) And Super Hang-On, After Burner and Virtua Racing?

In any case, it's ok. I have months to complete all of those games.

I feel these Sega gems are often forgotten. I wonder why.

And I'm curious why this title didn't try to replicate the Sonic 3 + Sonic & Knuckles cartridge.

I just realized last night that Beyond Oasis is in this compilation. Doubt that'll change your opinion of the matter, though.

I am discovering the great Phantasy Star II now.
How i didn't ever play to this game!

And the Robotnik's MBM trophy is really hard. I cannot pass the level 4.
