-- changing airline flights?
changing airline flights?
hi COR! i have an urgent question. i'm going to call british airways about it tomorrow but i'd like to have some opinions first. please just don't be too pessimistic. i just need to know what my plan of action should be.
okay, so i'm in cyprus until late may. my return flight was already booked, on may 22nd/23rd, from larnaca --> london --> boston. HOWEVER, i'm now planning a U.K. trip to manchester, birmingham and then london BEFORE the 22nd/23rd, like leaving cyprus on the 14th or 15th, staying in manchester for 4-5 days, spending a couple in birmingham and then going to london for a couple more and THEN flying from london to boston, as originally planned on the 22nd/23rd. so basically i need to cancel out the first leg of my original return flight (larnaca --> london) and switch it to a flight from larnaca --> manchester over a week earlier? and keep the same one from london --> boston on the 22nd/23rd, although technically would it still even be a "connecting" flight if the layover would be over a week long?
i hope you understand what i'm trying to say. if you don't then just ask. but any helpful opinions are appreciated so i could think of some possible scenarios to tell british airways tomorrow, or if i should just tell them all this and let them figure it out for me.
thanks!
if you change anything on your flight, you're most likely going to have to pay extra "surcharges" or something. unless you have travel insurance or whatever.

yeah i was assuming there would be a charge associated with it.
what if i booked a flight from larnaca --> manchester (direct) through another airline (thomas cook) on may 14th/15th, for only 78 euros, and just cancelled the larnaca --> london flight on may 22nd/23rd completely? would that work, do you think?
be careful and cancel it officially with BA -- not showing up for the first leg of your itinerary cancels the rest of your flights.
I'm a pretty regular flyer with BA (been a top tier flyer with them for the last four years) and it is hard to know what the exact cost is going to be until you call BA.
The cost depends on what the restrictions were on the ticket you bought, and those vary not only by airline but upon many other variables such as country of origin, availability on desired flights etc. However, it'll probably make most sense from an economic standpoint to just bring your LCA-LHR flight forward a week. That might only cost you 100. Then you can book yourself a separate LHR-MAN-LHR itinerary nested within that main one. That separate ticket might only cost you 70. You can do it online with BA which would mean when you get to LCA you can get your bag checked right through to MAN, even though you are on separate tickets. You can print your BA boarding pass off 24hrs beforehand so there will be no problems at T5.
Airline reservations systems aren't really geared up for unusual backtracking and other such travel patterns, as such the fares can shoot up very quickly.
As others have hinted at not turning up for your LCA-LHR flight will result in the rest of your itinerary being cancelled.
The best thing you can do is have the itinerary you want (with flight numbers and dates) on a piece of paper when you call them and tell you what you want to do. Agents are very grateful when you have your shit together before you call.
alright, i did it. i moved the larnaca --> london flight up for may 13th (wednesday), instead of originally may 22nd (friday). and i kept the london --> boston one the exact same on may 23rd. so i have 10 days in the U.K. and as soon as i get to heathrow, i'm taking a train to manchester! or maybe birmingham first and then manchester.
oh, it was 301 euros total for the change. a lot, but it's worth it.
thanks for your help everyone. now i'm broke! but happy.
