so what do you guys think?

so my bf is french canadian and so is our roommate and they talk in french all the time around me and sometimes it just really annoys me. they both speak perfect english and it's like why not just speak english when i'm around?

i mentioned it to him one time (in sort of a pissy way because i was pmsing lol) and he basically told me to get over it and that nothing is being said that would offend me or disrespect me and that it's just easier for them to talk french, which i understand... but i still think it's rude though. i think if i was spanish and we had a spanish roommate and the 2 of us were talking in spanish all the time, i think he would start to get annoyed too.

is this my own issue and i should just get over it?

I'm sorry, I stopped reading there. You should work it out with him. I don't know if that answer was coherent with the question.

Dump him.

I think it's rude. It isn't about what they are or aren't saying...it's about excluding your presence. It's like, "Hey, we know you're in the room, and though our conversation may not relevant to you, we're just going to ignore you anyway/not provide you with any opportunity to join us."

tell him that when he speaks french it makes him sound gay

It is rude to exclude you by speaking french, but I've caught myself doing this as well. I'm a native Spanish speaker and sometimes it's hard to say things exactly how you want unless you speak your native tongue.

not everything is about you girl.

and then there is slylee...?

Have hot lesbian sex with Frenchie. That will solve the problem in a way I can't entirely explain.

Yes. If I had an American girlfriend, and a Brazilian room mate, I'd never ever speak in English with him just because I'm in front of her. Even if she joined the conversation, I'd probably end up speaking in English with her and in Portuguese with him.

I agree with Jay, also. Learn some French

Posted by elFreak on Feb-21-2009 18:04:

french is not that different than english, especially the french your bf speaks. Quebecers use a lot of Anglicisms.

you could learn rather quick, getting rid of the accent is the hard part.

Aren't your languages like, strikingly similar?

Posted by Renzo on Feb-21-2009 18:09:

It is rude in theory, but from personal experience I know it's rather difficult to not do it.

Learn some French, Jamie. Knowing only one language is for the birds.

Posted by Slylee on Feb-21-2009 18:24:

yea i definitely plan on learning french, i was gonna post that and forgot. i really love this guy and i think he is it for me and i know i'm it for him (he told me) so i should just learn french. quebecois sounds different than regular french. it's choppier and not as gay sounding.

but i mean i've already told him it bothers me and he was basically like tough shit lol

I would tell you tough shit too. My friends and family always slip back and forth from Spanish to English depending on what they are saying and who they are talking to. It just makes more sense sometimes, especially when you have two natives speakers talking to each other.

I know it is difficult for me to think in English and translate that exactly into Spanish and vice-versa.
