Etymonic ER-20s

So in order to protect my ears, I bought these puppies, for $10+the one dollar for the cord. Not a bad price for saving my hearing

I ordered em last week..got here yesterday. Needless to say I was impressed @ the speed, but I was confused that they send the little itty bitty package in a full 10' by 14' padded envelope. in fact I laughed @ it. Because the earplugs fit on a key chain.

so I took em out..and they are alot bigger than I thought. Like massively huge. It says to put em in to the third phlange, but I cant get em in that far, it starts to bother me. This is gonna ruin the 12 Db Cancelling isnt it? Either way..

the $1 cord I bought is never going to be used. I put the earplug in and walked...the sound of the cord rubbing on teh back of my shirt drove me nuts. I can only imagine myself dancing w/ it in.

So...I suggest you all go buy pair. $11 is well worth the price of your hearing. Just dont buy translucent red..cuz thats what I got.

Try wetting them.... and yea, cord microphonics suck, lol!!

I got the EXACT combo as you, translucent red with the cord! they're neat, aren't they?

and its a BIT more than 12 db, lol!!

wetting them..hmm..ill try that. I even did the 'pull your ear up and out' and it goes in further, but not up to the third phlange

Hey, as long as it blocks out enough noise -- especially the peaks -- it's fine. I can do the second or third, and both work great.

Posted by j_spot on Jun-13-2002 10:10:

the first two phlanges fit in nicely, the third, rests just outside my ear canal. they took a bit of getting used to but my ears feel so good right now! no ringing or anything!

how much do these earplugs affect your mixing?

Posted by Gluegun on Jun-14-2002 04:47:

Well, seeing as how they should reduce sounds evenly, and mostly take away the dangerous peaks in sound.... i would say they wouldn't.

But you will have isolating headphones on a good amount of time anyway, right?

BTW, i'm speaking theory, not experience as far as mixing goes

Posted by EldamRy on Jun-14-2002 06:04:

does it attenuate sound in party , reduce noise and clarifing music ???( like a raver not like a DJ )

Posted by Gluegun on Jun-14-2002 20:47:

It is a musician's earplug. It reduces all sounds evenly. Sounds are still clear, but everything is a bit quieter, and the loudest parts, the peaks of volume and such, aren't dangerous. You can still hear fine, the clarity is great, but the dangerous part of the sound is cut out.

everything sounds great. The only problem im having is talking. I dont know how loud to yell over the music for my friends w/ out earplugs

Posted by Dj Flesch on Jun-14-2002 22:36:

I'm assuming that you are talking about earplugs. Wouldn't the translucent red make it look like your ears are bleeding?

Posted by Gluegun on Jun-15-2002 00:01:

Not these suckers.... they have a pretty interesting look to them....

Posted by j_spot on Sep-10-2002 07:54:

ok so after months of wearing my earplugs everytime im @ the bar, I think ive noticed my hearing getting better...but now, I dont think the plugs are working as well. I know they need replacing for the stems everynow and then..but I cant seem to figure out how often.

im @ the bar 3-4 nights a week. Wearing the earplugs a good 4-5 hours most nights.

can we have a link please?

Posted by fzrr on Sep-10-2002 12:17:

Ok i'm confused...i'm looking at the website and they look like normal earplugs but what the heck is the cord for on the ER-4 model?? And when you say they shouldn't affect your mixing, why are you wearing them if you have closed headphones??

When i go out i normally just use the squishy earplugs you get at shooting ranges or constructions sites. Are these things heaps better??

Posted by Gluegun on Sep-10-2002 14:40:

Okay, the ER-20's are earPLUGS. The ER6 and the ER4 are inside-the-ear-canal earPHONES. That's right, the ER4 and the ER6 are closed headphones...

The ER20's are great cause they block out all outside noises evenly, so only the dangerous peaks are lessened -- you can still hear the music how it was meant to be heard with ER-20's on, but just safely.

So, use big closed isolating headphones for mixing, and use er-20's for when you are at loud places, but not actually mixing.

Ahhh...i see now!! Thank you for clarifying that!! I wouldn't mind a pair of these ER-20 earplugs...i wonder if there is any suppliers in Australia??

Posted by Gluegun on Sep-11-2002 00:11:

Check Etymotic's webpage, i believe they have a list of the various worldwide dealerships...

you would need to keep your headphones on the entire time (both cups)

i dont know about you...but when i spin i only have the right cup partially over my ear. i need to listen to the monitors with the other

im not sure what ur setup is but most venues you will have at least 2 huge speakers blasting in your ears....that way you dont spin to the echos

Posted by Gluegun on Sep-11-2002 02:21:

How about isolating headphones at medium volume on one ear, and an earplug in the other, lol??

I have the ear closest to the monitor speaker fully in the can and the other ear out. And just adjust the volume on the monitors to something i can handle. I do carry earplugs just in case they have a fixed monitor level though and for before and after!! The way the statement about mixing was worded it sounded like they were talking about wearing them inside the headphones.

quick question - what would be the major differences between the ER-20's and the "Musicians' Earplugs" (ER-15, ER-9, ER-25)?

i know the ER-20's provide ~ 20 dB of isolation and the ER-15's are listed (on www.etymotic.com) to have 15 dB of isolation, YET the site says, "Musicians and others who need high-fidelity hearing protection for long time periods, or those who need different amounts of protection, may prefer the custom-fitted ER-9, ER-15 and ER-25 Musicians Earplugs."

if the ER-20's isolate more, why are the ER-15's etc. better for "long time periods"?

i must be misunderstanding something here. any clarification is appreciated.
