quake live open beta

check it out

Posted by Cpt.Cocaine on Feb-25-2009 23:06:

yeah check out the 35000 people queue

I've been trying to log on since it came online yesterday, but the server has been bloated since. At some point last night i managed to get on for a while and complete my profile and the skill test, but then I couldn't join any games with human players.

I did however manage to play a few against bots, and from what I can see, it's just like Q3, but slightly better. The weapons have been rebalanced (in terms of speed and damage), the interface is simplified and the graphics are slightly better. When they get the servers working it's gonna kick ass.

can you tell me more about the balance changes? prob wont play but im curious anyway...

Well I don't know the specifics because I haven't been following it all that closely. All I know is that they're there, and I've personally noticed a slight decrease in rocket damage, increase in rocket speed and increase in plasma gun speed (it's almost instant hit now).

they prob toned down the power of the plasma then coz its delay was the only part of its use that required skill.

Finally managed to join a game. Took about 2 minutes of waiting for challenge.

Can somebody clarify for me what this is? Is this a free game? I'm not talking about the BETA; when id launches the final product, will it be available for retail? Off Steam? Off a website? Is it free? Do you pay for it? What's the deal here?

It's a re-release of Q3: Arena with slight improvements.

It's completely free, even after beta. You just log on to quakelive.com, create an account, download a small plugin for your browser and you're good to go. Then you've got a list of games on a web page, you just click the one you want to join and you're in.

PS, my tag is 'Cocaine', if anyone wants to add me.

Now that's awesome. Nothing wrong with a free game, especially when its friggin Quake.
