Travelling to Clearwater//Recommedations?
This is crazy.
My spring break is the week of March 23-27 plus the weekends on both ends, and I'm travelling to Clearwater with my dad and my gf to visit my uncle (I'm from Chicago). It made me think of the WMC, which I know is in Miami every year, and how badly I want to visit there someday and experience it. I've been such a huge EDM since I was about 16 and I was salivating thinking about going there. I just turned 21 a month ago (and my GF has been 21 for a while) so we want to start experiencing the club scene for real now as opposed to just dreaming of being at all the livesets I've heard over the years.
Well, the crazy thing is I log on here with the intentions of asking you lucky Florida party people if there are any good clubs near Clearwater without knowing when the WMC is, and I see the mu' f**in thread pinned at the top at it's the goddamn week I'm coming down! CRAZY!!
So, now, here's my question: If there are clubs near Clearwater, should I go to them? Or would you recommend travelling to Miami and getting a hotel and experiencing the WMC? How long does it take to get from Clearwater to Miami (I have access to a car the whole week) and how much would a hotel be for an overnight stay (or are they all booked?) I won't have a TON of cash, but I suppose if need be I can borrow some. What is worth it? I really want to make use of this time because I get to travel to Florida for free and have a place to stay for free all week, so any extra cash I have can go to these types of things. So I'm just asking... what the hell should I do guys? Help me out!
Fucking clearwater? hahahahahahah are you serious?!
Fuck do yourself a favor and come to miami.
Dude, I don't think there's anything in Clearwater worth mentioning. There's Hyde Park Cafe in Tampa which is fuckin' great, but trust me, the week of WMC, all EDM clubs in Florida outside of Miami will be pretty much dead.
Hotels, provided you can still find them will be pretty expensive at this point. We're in the $260/night range and we booked in December.
Is it worth it? If you go for at least a couple of days, you will have the best time of your life thus far, guaranteed.
Bring some tanning lotion. Clearwater beach is a beautiful place
Start saving and come to Miami that week for WMC!
How clear is the water in clearwater

You can do a Miami trip on a budget if you have to. We've done WMC in years past for around $500/person. And that's 5 nights. If you want to save some scratch I'd recommend getting a hotel in downtown or near the airport and driving to the events you want to see. South Beach is obviously where a lot of the action is but there are some amazing clubs downtown too.
I've made many Miami trips (from Tampa) with plans of passing out on South Beach/pulling an all nighter and driving back the next day. Even if you have to do this to experience WMC, DO IT. The clubs will run 'til 5 on the beach and you can conveniently grab a beach towel from your car and head right to the beach. Pass out for a few hours and wake up to the sun rising over the ocean. The 4 hour drive back to Clearwater isn't so bad the next day.
I remember my first WMC. It blew my fucking mind. I'll leave it at that.

Say I do this, and leave from Clearwater during the morning or something. What kind of budget would cushion getting into the clubs, getting drinks, plus food of course, for a whole night, plus the car ride home? And when you pass out on the beach.... nobody fucks with you? Is it that good of an area where you can trustfully fall asleep on the beach with others around? |

OR be an adventurous indiana jones style clubber and do what edparks suggests which is what i did which is sleep on south beach on a blanket. yes being fucked with by bums while you sleep is a possibility, if you're sleeping there at night (happened to me). i recommend taking your pill at around 10pm, stay till club closes at 5am, then watch the sunrise on the beach with your gurly as your pill wears off and you fall asleep and wake up sometime in the afternoon. (wear sunscreen or get some shade). OR option B, at 5am take taxi to club space terrace for 5am-? (however long you can handle it), then sleep on beach while getting a tan. btw being from chicago, your skin is most likely whiter than the divine holy spirit, the thickest sunblock will only work for so long, the sun in miami is the most intense sun you will ever experience, it is seriously fucking briiiight and cookin. so really spackle that shit on. that sun down there is no joke. the only problem with sleeping on the beach is, that's all it is, a place to sleep. I quickly discovered doing this causes you to be really smelly and greasy and dirty by the 2nd or 3rd day being down there. that's the problem is finding a shower. i made friends with someone at the club and offered them money to use their shower. |
Go check out the WMC forum. Go into my events thread and scroll to the bottom and find Jason's Google map that he did. That will tell you exactly now close/far some of the clubs are. Decide what day(s) you want to come down and figure out what DJs you want to see and go from there. You almost have to go to South Beach once just to see it (I assume you have never been to Miami before?)
As far as hotels, I don't know what neighborhoods are good or bad but I'd say be ready to spend $80 on a hotel that's half way decent.
If you're REALLY lucky you can find some on SoBe for $100/night. Otherwise check the big chain hotels near downtown/airport.
As far as WMC layout... the beach clubs are mostly within a 1 mile radius. The downtown clubs are also within a 1 mile radius, but it's much shadier walking around there.
Like I said in the first paragraph, figure out who you want to see and go from there.
Re: passing out on the beach
People might fuck with you but during WMC there will be all kinds of partyers on the beach. I would just leave your valuables in the car. Most of the parking garages on the beach are pretty safe, but they will run you $15+ to park for the night.
Remember too that the downtown clubs run ALL night. IF you're into partying late you can party until the sun comes up and beyond. Then hop in your car and drive back to Clearwater. I've done it a handful of times and it's rough but totally worth it.

The price of events will range from free to $100. Obviously the bigger names will cost more. If you want to see the big names I'd recommend presales.
I personally think going to the popular events is a pain in the ass. Most of them are packed to the brim and it's just not worth it IMO.
What parties are you thinking about going to?

Shine is pretty decent spot. You can walk outside by the pool and relax in the ocean breeze.
Nikki Beach will be packed like sardines and expensive, but it is a fun venue. One of the only true outdoor venues.
DO NOT BOTHER WITH MANSION unless you like overpaying for drinks and a crowd who could give two shits about good music.
The Space terrace is an amazing place and IMO that party will be of the best of WMC. Get there early... let's say by midnight for sure. The terrace is one of a kind. Most people's favorite venue in Miami. Great sound, outdoor vibe, and that lineup is unreal. Prices shouldn't be unreasonable, especially compared to Mansion, Cameo, LIV, Prive, Mokai, Mynt. Another plus is that the terrace will be open until 2-3pm. You get a lot of value if you can stick it out that long.
The Drumcode party will be in your face techno I'm sure of that. If that's a sound you're into then go for it. I believe Glass is on the beach which means it closes at 5.
Friday/Saturday night is a whole nother ballgame.
There are some places in Clearwater that are fun at night. Sheppards on clw beach and just about any of the hotel bars.
The problem is they've completely gutted driving out there and parking while there.
