The Simpsons to break US record

Animated comedy The Simpsons is to become the longest-running prime-time series in US TV history after makers Fox ordered another two seasons.

The show is currently in its 20th season which matches the record of Western drama Gunsmoke, shown on CBS, which ended in 1975.

The 21st season will begin in the autumn with the 22nd airing next year.

The Simpsons was first shown in December 1989, and made its UK debut on Sky in September 1990.

The new commission of 44 episodes over two seasons will bring the total number of shows to 493.

The popular cartoon, featuring Bart, Homer, Marge and other residents of Springfield, has received 24 Emmy awards in its 20 years on screen.

Next month, a new episode of The Simpsons is to have its premiere in the UK for the first time in the show's history.

New episodes are usually shown in the US on Fox a week before being shown on Sky1 in the UK.

In The Name Of The Grandfather, a St Patrick's Day special which details a family holiday to Ireland, will be shown on Sky1 on 17 March.

I can't believe this show will (likely) hit 500 episodes. After doing some surfing I found out that even though The Simpsons is taking over Gunsmoke in regards to amount of seasons, Gunsmoke still did a total of 635 episodes... still a long way to go to break that record.

Still love the Simpsons to death, just hope their plot lines will pick up.

Still gotta respect the fact they're running so strong after all these yrs

Not knowing when to cut your losses is probably something you don't want to advertise.

If they still have the ratings to support the show, then they don't need to cut their losses. I think the term you're looking for is "milking their success".

The Simpsons is one of those shows that always seems to stop the channel-surfing, whether I'm alone in my room and bored, or at a friends place looking for something to put on.

Has the show gotten a little tired and repetitive? Yes. But it's still quality television. Of course it's going to seem old and past it's prime to us... We've been watching it for 20 fucking years.

Ratings: Take My Life, Please

That's from two weeks ago, their best night of the season so far was 4th place with 6.82 million views. Sure, it's enough to support the show, but it's pathetic compared to 5 or 10 years ago.

Their ratings have consistently gone down and they are losing viewers. If they stopped now, I maintain that it could accurately be called cutting their losses.

Simpsons was cool when it came out, because its humour was considered risquee back then, it played late night after kids went to bed. It's nothing now, and no biggie...

/bring back Ren and Stimpy plox

I remember when the Simpsons was just a short on The Tracy Olman show.

The Simpsons offer something for both adults and kids. So many episodes have takes on old movies that makes it fun for adults and at one time it was a little riskier then any other cartoon out there. Simpsons will definately have a place in Television history.

This is way better than the Simpsons...

It basically means I agree with his statement.

Homer Simpson > Peter Griffin

Cartman > Stewie > Bart

I agree with that. I just don't think it should still have a place in Television Present.

Oh for sure. I remember when I was young my mom would BAN us (lol) from ever watching this show!

I loved the show, and took every opportunity to watch it when I could. Like the random sleep over had on a week night (say the night before a PA day) at a friend's whose parent's werent against us watching such a show.

Or whenever we'd go on vacation in teh summer to my cousin dustin's. me and him would always watch it (secretly, my mom had no idea lol) on their basement television.

Funny thinking back abt how "bad" that show was supposed to be. Seems so strange thinking abt it now.

Catch it on TVTropolis a few times a month usually. Still love the show -- love the oldskool humour.

Watched a whole bunch over the xmas break when they were airing holiday episodes of old shows. Marred w/ Children Christmas eps rock! lol

Loved it.
