MacbookPro or PC

Looking to invest in a new laptop. Have been trying to do some comparisons for the bedroom dj over which OS to use, but its mostly just fanboys defending their own. If money is not an issue (well to a degree, can afford up to 3000), which system is better suited for djing/amateur producing based on knowledge and own experience? Thanks in advance.


PS. tried to search TA, but came up empty handed. So if anyone has link to other thread, please share.

If money is no option, it really doesn't matter imo.

i like the new MacBook but not the Pro, its too big and ugly I might as well get an iMac compared to that one. The small MacBook doesnt have firewire thought (firewire is a must to be able to run good external soundcards), so myself have putted the whole mac laptop idea on the shelf waiting for something better. Meanwhile im saving for an iMac.

If you're going to be a dj then it really doesn't matter.

i just love OSX and especially as an application developer i love having a proper operating system with a proper kernel behind it. Note: my macbook has 90day uptime and I do everything with it on a daily basis and there are no memory leaks or weird "WTFs" that are found with windows xp

If your an application developer could you please make a fucking decent wave editor such as wavleab or soundforge.


I can't believe no one has made decent wave recording and wave editor program for the mac yet. It's a massive gap in the market and there are countless threads all over the web crying out for one.

I'm honestly considering bootcamp just to install wavelab on my imac.

I know a lot of serious producers, composers an engineers who have to keep a PC around for this very reason although they do everthing else on a mac.

To the OP - i was a die hard PC user for 10 years until I switched last year to Mac. OSX is great - it works, no strange issues which plague all pc operating systems, ample power, great screens, reliable, stunning design.

get a macbook and spend the rest on nice speakers and a decent audio interface.

Ug, these threads always end the same way. When questions like this arise in a forum, be they "what mixer should I get" or "what computer should I buy," any response you get will be anecdotal fanboi'ism; people saying how "macs rule because MINE never crashes" and "pc's rule because MINE is more powerful than my friends mac" and so on. The fact is, Macs crash. PC's crash. Do your homework, try both, and see which one will best suit your personal needs and workflow. If you must bring it to a forum, you need to have specific questions that can be objectively answered; otherwise it's just another senseless addition to the PC vs. Mac beat-off festival that rages ad infinitum across the intertubes.

to the above poster....I guess here is a more direct question. Im not really looking for crash issues or power of the processors, etc. More so just looking to see if one of the other is more user friendly for an amatuer DJ/producer. For instance on the newer macbooks they have the mutli touch trackpad that I havent used. Would this be something something useful to us, etc. Also the interface and ease of use of the desktop with the programs we run. Things like that. I haven't used a mac as much as a PC but I see that almost every DJ is using them these days (could just be a trend) and was just wondering if there was any specific reason.

well, a primary reason they use them more often is because they don't crash and are more reliable. I find things that crash less and require less tweaking are more user friendly.

And contrary to Gen, I've had my mac for nearly a year now and it has never crashed, not once - on very rare occasions, I have had a specific program crash, but they just needed to be relaunched. 10 seconds and problems solved.

I'm not a fanboy of any sort and feel comfortable on both, and know both have pros and cons, it's just that Mac are so much more stable, do what I need and let me do it in less time with least hassle.

I have an early '08 macbook pro (not the unibody one).


I've only used PC's before this. I got a mac mini a few years ago but the processor wasn't fast enough i didn't have enough memory for what i was using and over all the experience was fine but nothing special.

Ever since i laid my hands on the MBP I've literally loved every second.

Firstly the trackpad. I honestly think it is probably the most useful thing going when it comes to laptops. I used to always like having an external mouse in my laptop bag before hand but now I'm completely happy using it. There are programs out there which allow you to assign the 3 finger swipe (Even 4 finger like the new MB/MBP's with some tweaking). 2 finger scrolling is great as is two finger tapping to right click.

Honestly the track pad alone is IMO worth the purchase (bit of an overstatement there but it really is so intuitive to use.

The screen is beautiful both in bright lighting/bright objects behind whatever your scenario is the screen (I've got the glossy screen) does a great job. I have read though that for designers they usually get the matte screen on the 17" as it represents the colours better than the glossy ones do.

The operating system was fresh and new to me and I'm still learning small things every day. Annoying and frustrating at first but i enjoyed the challenge and it was nice having new things to learn while constantly saying "That is savage!"

Anyway i could go on. Being able to turn off the monitor to save on battery life if i didn't need it. Backlit keyboard, the magnetic power lead, easy access to the ram bay and interchangeable battery (not a feature on the new MBP 17" i believe?? might still be able to do it on the 15, not sure)



My two main gripes. I can't run Nero Burning rom. I used to be able to load a 70min mp3 file into nero, go into the properties of the file and put track splits right there and then and then (after removing the 2 second gaps) i could burnt the mp3 (Set) and have track marks every 5 min or more precise if I took the time to listen for the transitions.

Having loaded windows onto my MBP I then tried running Nero on it, and while it ran successfully my cdrom drive doesn't support track splitting, or indexing iirc.

Literally those are my only gripes.


To sum up, I've enjoyed having something new with a simple enough OS that's a pleasure to use but more importantly... I HATE using Vista, it drives me CRAZY!


I am not a fanboy.

Either system will work well for you when you have that much money.
Personally i just prefer doing my every day to day tasks on my MBP. Emailing, listening to music, trying new programs, using the automator feature on it (look it up on google for more info)

I honestly will only ever go back to a pc if an amazing OS came out that would run on it or I couldn't afford another Mac. (having said that, i could load the new OS on the mac so....)

Fit right in? Why does that even matter? If it runs the program it runs the program. Fitting in has nothing to do with it??? I confused..

i was just trying to say that "most" djs around here use macs , and they all seem to love it

The majority do, but you will have no problems what so ever running the any of the dj programs on a 'normal' laptop.

in my opinion, since he doesn't have a problem with shelling out extra for a mac, it's totally worth getting a macbook

5 years ago most Traktor users were on Windows laptops because for some reason Traktor ran a lot slower on Mac. But lately the Mac versions are good and most newer users are on Mac, although knowledgeable people are going either way.

The hackintosh discussion has been done to death on here - it completely defeats the point of owning either a mac or pc - it's the worst of both worlds.

Taking an incredibly stable OS and hacking it so it sits on lower quality components, thus making it an unstable mac, which costs less but uses crapper components.

Just get a pc or mac depending on your persuasion or budget.

anyone's opinions here will be biased most likely


use whatever operating system you're most comfortable with. plain and simple. i prefer windows.

..though the fact that soundforge isn't available on mac would drive me nuts.

It really makes no difference for both production and DJing, so long as you get the most RAM possible and a fast CPU/dual core.

I know several prominent names who DJ and produce on windows laptops.

Yes, but that is the only reason why I would recommend a mac. The thread starter is planning on only djing with the laptop as far as I can tell, in which case there is no real reason to spend more for a mac unless you've GOT to have OSX.

if money were an option say around $450 (i'm cheap) what would you guys recommend?

well you cant really get a new mac for $450 so there's no choice.. looks like the only thing you can get is an asus eeePc and i'm not sure what that can run
