Whats bugging me: Gear heads with crappy monitors.
OK, so in part two of my ongoing series What's Bugging Me:
Why is it that I continually see people that have loads of expensive and vintage gear, but run it through substandard monitors?
I see this all the time when users are posting their studio pics. I'm just thinking that if you can afford to drop $4,000 on a vintage J8, you ought to be able to afford an upgrade from HR824's.
Does this bug anyone else?
is this the one you're tlaking about :

Several of my friends are very prolific and well known producers, with lots of big selling releases and prolific in their respective scenes.
Many of them use the same monitors they did years ago when they were starting out in their bedrooms.... because they know the sound of them inside and out, and know how to get the best from them.
They also reference playbacks using other gear, as anyone worth their salt should do really.
Don't be too quick to judge someone just because they havent blown $0000s on a pair of genelecs or whatever.
It's not about the gear....

one of my really good friends went from 7+ yrs on his $5,000 dynaudios to Rokit 5's. he said he spends so much time getting his tracks to sound good that in the end they sound AMAZING on the dyns. i guess its that old HS80 thing where "if they sound good on these, they sound good on anything"
really though you just need a speaker that's clear enough you can hear problems (either mud, or whatever) and correct them. the rest is preference

actually i find it even worser when you hear tracks from such "studios" and they sound like from someone who's into producing since one week :\

Totally true about some people priorities coming across strange - I think as an EDM producer (which in reality is engineer, composer, mix engineer and Mastering engineer all in one) monitors are going to be crucial. but then again, as Freak said if you know them that well, why use something else?
But that NL guy owns some massive Business ISP company so obviously has more money than he knows what to do with and probably just always wanted those synths and doesn't care much about his production values (and yes I know there's a very valid argument to say whats the point of having such great synths if you can't hear them well etc, but these are toys to him, not production necessities).
Question/discussion (and threadjack): 824's were (and still are really) the industry standard at that price point.....but do the HS80's offer better value vs performance considering they are only about $600 a pair or would you think that Truths (2031a) for $350 offer better performance vs value than both those.....(because I need new monitors soon and am trying to figure out what i should spend...an no, I can't afford focals
)
If u know your monitors really well it doesnt matter.
I have crappy monitors myself (Alesis M1 MkII)
But my mixes always translates nicely on all the sound systems i have tested them on, as long as they sound good in the monitors.
For the best audio output, get a peice of yarn, and shove it into the output jack of your mixer, and get a foam cup, bust a hole in the bottom of the foam cup and jam the other end of the yarn into the cup, place on your ear.

dont see the point in expensive monitors unless youve got the room to match
What bothers me even more is people with expensive monitors but no room treatment whatsoever.

MK monitors and subs are nice
Psst... when you do convince those people to upgrade, can I have the old 824s?
I'm still producing on uh... Sony somethings. They're um, rectangular, and about 2 feet tall and one foot wide. At least I'm pretty sure they're Sony, I mean "Sony" is spelled right. I think I got them on eBay about 8 years ago. So yeah, if you can just have them send me their old monitors, that'd be swell, thanks!
Why should we care about the monitors someone else has?
It would make sense you worry about your own gear not being good enough, but someone elses? Seems to me you got too little to worry about for yourself
i need some proper moniters, but i prefer to spend money on synths... i can hear the sounds well enough
