Well, this is the very first mix from me. I really had no direction planned when I recorded this, but the result was decent enough. There lots of stuff in here with organic sounding percussion, then it moves into some techno and finishes hard at the end. I know most of the tracks aren't the newest/freshest out right now, but I did the best with what I had.

I know this is nowhere near perfect, there are a couple fairly noticable errors but I just wanted to try to get some feedback on how I could improve. I'm still learning, so I welcome any and all comments. Enjoy!

Damn dude, I don't know how I missed this! I'm on it

Awesome shit Seppuku, I was really grooving and bopping my head to this today at work. I'll give you a more detailed review later, once I'm able to listen to it thoroughly

Erp, totally didn't see this. Peepin' it.

I know...I'm missing a lot of sets because the trancefags clog this forum and hide the good ones rather quickly

Hey now, every once and a while I grab one of those trance mixes so I can remind myself why I don't listen to it.

THEY SERVE A PURPOSE MAN, THEY SERVE A PURPOSE!

You really need to hear a whole mix for that?

Posted by Seppuku on Mar-11-2009 21:48:

Oh and Oscar, good to hear it wasn't a total disaster. I look forward to your extended comments.

I'll skim from track to track. Some of 'em will have a catchy beat and I'll bounce for a second and then -- well, anything else happens and I fast forward.

Hah, I actually did a techy/trance mix the other night, for the total hell of it.

Posted by Ted Promo on Mar-11-2009 22:01:

I'll throw in some prog trance in my sets every now and then. I still have certain tracks I love and love to work into a tech house/techno set.

One of those being Evolution ft. Jayn Hannah - Walking on Fire.

Alright, just finished it.

There were some fun tracks to be heard, but about 20 minutes in it got wayyyy to bloop techno-ey for me. Thankfully it didn't tread that territory for too long. You had a pretty decent flow into bosh techno even though I've gotten a bit tired of it and can only take a few tracks of boshiness before it starts getting tired.

Onto the mixing: the first mix was but I'm sure you knew that already. There were a few other questionable mixes but overall you did decently. My only other complaint would be the audio quirks that happened sometimes. The one I remember was around 43 minutes in where there was a skip and then it slowed down (messing with the pitch maybe?) and then sped right back up.

lol, I guess this might sound a bit harsh but in the end the mix was decent. My main focus would be work on the mixing and try to iron out the audio quirks on your next mix.

Posted by Seppuku on Mar-12-2009 03:13:

Thanks for the review. I know some of the mixing was pretty rough, I almosttt didn't post this but I figured any negative feedback would only help me in the future. This was basically my first mix, so I'm still trying to get the hang of programming and such.

As for the audio quirks...I think I need to update the drivers on my sound card as that might have something to do with it.

Yeah I pretty much agree with Adam. I think you had really solid flow though, all the tracks fit together nicely and you built up a pretty solid set from start to finish. I didn't care for some of the bleepy bloopy tracks in the middle, not that they were bad tracks, I just prefer techno with some bulk to it.

And yeah, I'm sure you're aware of the mixing issues. I wish I could comment on beatmatching but I'm an Ableton cheater so I can't really say much there. I did find your EQing to be pretty good though, nothing noticeably bad or detracting. There was a transition in the middle where the percs were conflicting a lot, this happens to me a lot too while mixing and matching the higher ends up is something I've been trying to work on lately.

Overall, solid track selection and flow. Mixing could use some work, and of course those technical hitches, but what can ya do.

Looking forward to hearing more from ya man.

Word, hopefully the mixing will show improvement in my next one, which I'll most likely get done right after Miami. Im messing around with different styles, so it could be totally different. Thanks for the review.

OK dude, after listening 3 times I can give you my detailed review...I gotta tell you, the first two times I listened to it I must have not been in the mood for this because I wasn't too much into it. However, the third time I listened to it, which was on the car on my way to work this morning...I thought it totally rocked

Track Selection

This was one of the most pleasant Techno sets I've heard. I specially liked the tracks on the first half or so of the set. I like my Techno with a little House on top, which you did very good here. Opening track was superb, along with the track with the "asian flutes". I'm guessing that's the Minilogue track, but I'm not sure.

Programming and Flow

I think this is what you did best on this set. It flows very good from the slower, housier vibe at the beginning into the banging stuff at the end. All moving at the right pace.

Mixing

OK, this is where you need the most work. Some of your transitions were spot on like the one out of "Bounce" and into "Red Carpet Mile". It was probably the best programmed and best executed mix in the set.

However, there were some transitions that didn't sound right. For example the first transition, like others have pointed out. I'm by no means an expert but from what I can tell, your main issue with mixing is phrasing and beatmatching at some times. You pretty much have the EQing and levels down, no problems there.

To add up on what enydo mentioned about the tracks in the middle with the conflicting percs, I think this was due to the fact that they have different time. This makes the mix sound like a trainwreck even though you have the downbeats aligned properly. This has happened to me while practicing but I really don't know how to solve this, so perhaps someone more experienced can comment on this.

To sum up, this was a very enjoyable set for me. Your track selection was exactly what I like in a Techno set and the flow was pretty much on point. Work on those mixing issues and you're set. Looking forward to your next effort. Keep it up!

Posted by Seppuku on Mar-17-2009 16:39:

Thanks Oscar.

I'm sure the conflicting percs problem can be solved with EQing somehow, thats something I will be working on. or maybe the tracks aren't meant to fit together.
