marcel dettmann interview on ra

he really seems totally unspoiled and i think thats what we can hear in his music:
quote:
Since then, work and pleasure have been indistinguishable for Dettmann. Most weekdays, he wakes up around nine or ten, and gets to work on his tracks. "It's amazing, to sit there for ten hours just making strange music." Dettmann's creative process is interrupted only by his five hour shifts at Hard Wax, which occur three times per week. This can be difficult on Mondays, when he's short one night of sleep after a weekend at Berghain. Luckily, the staff there tends to be understandingthe shop is owned by Mark Ernestus of Basic Channel fame, and the staff includes, T++, DJ Pete (AKA Substance) and Equalized (AKA Shed). When his weekends aren't consumed by DJ gigs, Dettmann and his girlfriend go on double dates with Tobias and Cassy, or skiing with Ben Klock and co. And finally, once every month or so, Dettmann gets his clubbing fix. "Me and a bunch of guys get together and just go, for fifteen hours or so, we get totally lost." As a punter in the crowd, Dettmann's favorite spots include Harry Klein ("still very good... the sweat literally drips from ceiling") and Muna, a student favorite in Jena. But when he's manning the helm, there is no better club than Berghain, the club whose name has become inextricably linked with his own. "Berlin, Hard Wax, Berghain, my music. It's an amazing combination," he says. "It's the best thing that's ever happened to me."
Marcel Dettmann is living THE life that most techno DJs want to achieve at some point in their careers. Props to him for working his way to success.

Originally posted by Marcel Dettmann Dettmann's music is also driven by another staple of early raves: filth. "Techno is dirty," he says. "When you come back from a techno party, you should be dirty. Your jeans are filthy, you smell like cigarettes, you are covered in sweat. This is very important for me."

From what I hear the doormen are very selective. Rumor?
yes they have a strict door policy. but the doorman isnt unfair, he is just very good in sorting out the people who "pretend" i think. and yeah there are some unfavorable stories regarding tourists... on the other hand, it really isnt that hard to get in if you fit in, its only that sometimes the doorman knows better about this than you
IMO that is just as lame as these hip US clubs letting in VIPs while the rest of us sit out in the cold. Just more club politics. Maybe I'm missing something.

Originally posted by nefardec i guess you could argue it's politics. but basically, if you are there for the right reasons you'll probably get in. i didn't have any trouble. re:dettmann quote i have a love/hate relationship with smoking in clubs. I like the ambience on one hand, but it really fucks up my upper respiratory system , especially when you're partying in a basement or low ceiling warehouse or something.

story from discogs:
quote:
Three hours ago he had caught the last train after a gig in Leipzig, heading for his set in Berlin the very same night. But Dettmann missed to get off and suddenly has found himself stuck at dead end Hamburg main station: no trains till morning, no one to call for a ride. Promptly and without any hesitation about the ridiculous charge he hires a cab, having only one thing in mind: Berlin, Berghain, the Club

I was lucky enough to see the guy play a few weeks back in Minneapolis. Crackhead... doubt it. Our promoters here had the nerve to give him a PBR when he asked for a beer. He did chain smoke cigs and play the afterparty for free. So maybe he's got a bit of crackhead in him. Hard ass, definitely not.
Oh did I mention he was playing mid 90's techno rippers and closed with Radiohead. Dude can definitely play music.
I swear I saw a picture of him with a tattoo on his face one time...now I can't remember where or when I saw it lol
His Bodytonic Podcast press photo had him with a snakeskin type tattoo pattern.
