Movement Festival roster is shaping up
Adam Graham / Detroit News Pop Music Writer
Hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa, celebrated house DJ Carl Cox and Detroit techno mainstays Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Carl Craig lead the lineup for this year's Movement Festival, May 23-25 at Detroit's Hart Plaza. They are among 35 acts that organizers for the 10th annual festival are announcing today.
Meanwhile, incendiary British electronic act the Prodigy will headline the official Movement kickoff party on May 22 at Fillmore Detroit. It's the first time a major act has played the festival's pre-party, which is traditionally a somewhat laid-back soiree.
"This is a very significant, visible event," Paxahau's Jason Huvaere said Tuesday of the pre-party. "It's much bigger than everything we've done before."
Today's lineup announcement represents about half of the total lineup for this year's fest, Huvaere says. Also on the docket: popular mashup DJ Z-Trip, 2008 Movement fave Benny Benassi and San Francisco-based experimental electronic act Bassnectar. This year's Movement will feature at least four stages of music, with the possibility of a fifth being added at a later date.
Weekend passes for the festival, $35, go on sale today at www.paxahau.com. After Saturday, passes go up to $40 -- on par with last year's advance prices. Tickets for the Prodigy-led pre-party, $20, go on sale Friday at www.livenation.com and www.wantickets.com.
Cox is performing at the fest for the first time since 2001, and will headline the VitaminWater-sponsored main stage on May 23. Loco Dice vs. Luciano will close the main stage on May 24, and former festival director May -- making his first Movement appearance since 2006 -- will close the fest May 25.

should AL represent this year? Chris Manik & co? What do you think?
no doubt
awesome. gotta tell my group to get in on the early bird special.
tickets, hotel done
I think that all of Indianapolis' techno crew is staying at the Holiday Inn Express. Can't beat $42 a night!
I have enjoyed this festival for so many years and am happy that it is maturing. I just hope it keeps attracting people who really love the music vs. those who are making an appearance or just want to get messed up.
Sadly, I have noticed that there are a lot more Miami types appearing each year... people who don't dance and just want to be in the DJs entourage.
I look forward to meeting some TAs there, as it seems I never run into you at the club.

So the majority of people are staying in the Holiday Inn express? How far away is that from the venue?
tons of people are staying at the Renaissance Marriott.
Thanks I'm gong to get on that booking sometime next month........So what is the difference in the Vip and reg tickets? I know I'm more than likely not going to get VIP ticks but I'd still like to know the differentials in said tickets.

| Originally posted by techhouse_junky In the past, VIP tix included: separate bar and bathrooms(who cares), free t-shirt, and about 15 drink tickets. So yeah, the drink tickets are what makes the price of the tickets worth it...I think. |

| Originally posted by Quadlow you couldn't pay me enough money to stay there. its one big rave cave that im just to old and bitter to deal with, lol. yeah the whole point of VIP is the drink tickets. if you drink, you will get your money back. just got this news: The Prodigy @ State/Fillmore Theater for opening night of DEMF... Friday, May 22nd |
If the lineup for DEMF is good, I'll be trying my hardest to come back for it - we've got a 6-hour Tenaglia set out here and Modeselektor (who I have a sneaky suspicion will be at DEMF as well) so it'll come down to that I guess.
If there was ever a knightly order that's sole purpose was to protect the virtue of techno, you would be their leader.
no rave... just a sleep cave
