Gross National Happiness
... or GNH.
Anyone know much about this?
I read a bit about it but forget where.

Is this sort of like, "What the mindset of society thinks reflects in the economy?"
I believe this to be a major factor in the 'hope and light' speeches given by both Obama and Harper recently...

Russia would be number one.

It's a new indicator, and has met a lot of resistance, but here's the link to the group that aggregates the data.
http://www.iim-edu.org/managementbe...nessProject.pdf
These are the criteria they use to measure:
| quote: |
1. Economic satisfaction (savings, debt and purchase power)
2. Environmental satisfaction: (pollution, noise and traffic)
3. Workplace satisfaction (job satisfaction, motivation, ethics, conflict, etc.)
4. Physical health (Severe illnesses, overweight,..)
5. Mental health (usage of antidepressants, self-esteem, positive outlook..)
6. Social satisfaction [including family and relationship satisfaction] (domestic disputes, communication, support, sex, discrimination, safety, divorce rates, complaints of domestic conflicts and family lawsuits, public lawsuits, crime rates, etc.)
7. Political satisfaction (quality of local democracy, individual freedom, and foreign conflicts, etc.)

I think you can probably guess from the categories used that Russia doesn't fare well.

You simply misunderstand Russian mentality - we don`t measure everything in life in money. You still can`t get it? And actualy we have foreigh consumer products we just use them a bit longer for economy - we dont waste money like you.

Assumptions aside, you obviously didn't look at the seven factors that go into producing the figure - only one was related to consumption - I was referring to the environment, workplace (how's unemployment over there?), individual freedoms, and mental health (considering Russia has one of the highest depression rates in the world).

I certainly did.
Russia would be top in all if not for faked figures by western governments.

Are you claiming that your own President was part of this Western conspiracy when he said this?
"Our country is in a threatened state. If we don't deal with this, then in 10, 20, 30 years we could be in a situation where part of the country's territory is unfit for habitation."
-Dmitry Medvedev

Sorry I couldnt help it! ... That statement is actually very far from the truth. I lived there, I can tell you that myself.
High suicide rate, emigration, crime, poverty, decreasing natural growtth, etc. etc. etc. - man, Russia is in serious trouble. Denying it is actually what is worsening the problem.

Jesus Christ man this is getting really f*cking old. Can you say anything else except "We're the best at everything..woooooohooo!"
I've seen dozens of your posts over the past 2 weeks and every single one contains some shit about Russia being the most happy/prosperous/powerful country on the planet.
I wouldn't mind a little cheerleading if it were remotely true..but the fact is Russia is a semi-totalitarian frozen shithole where most people live in squalor. It's so depressing that nobody in the civilized world ever visits it.
Time to accept reality.

I also disagree with what VictorJukov said, but your comment is a bit harsh and rude, and obviously not true. Many people visit Russia every year - I dont have the statistics but I know its a big number. Despite the risk of being ripped off, many Westerners live in Russia and do business there. I know a lot of people in my town in Canada who are fascinated about Russia and are interested in visiting it in the future. Its not so depressing - there is a growing middle class, and things in Russia have greatly improved in the last 8 years. Poverty is still there, but at much lower levels since 1999. There are some serious problems there, for sure, but its a much safer place to travel to than half of the world ... and will be even better to visit in the future.
Russia has many beautiful pieces of architecture, rich culture, language, great people - many cultures, beautiful landscapes - YES I mean that - from virgin forests, to spectacular mountain sceneries of Caucasus mountaints, to Kamchatka springs, to subtropical Sochi landscapes. Travelling the country is an inspiring experience.
You dont know enough about Russia to make an accurate opinion - I read a lot of Western media, and I can obviously understand why you would think that its the last place in the world to visit - the Western media is often very negative of Russia. At the same time, however, Russian media is too dam patriotic/nationalistic and one-sided in its analysis.
EDIT: You should know well enough that he is not speaking on behalf of all Russians, so no need to respond assuming that all Russians are like that. Enough of the stereotypes

shhh mag, you're ruining my attempt to get him angry, lol.. Of course I know that Russia is a decent place these days.. I was just tired of viktor's endless "We da best!" posts. Do a search on his name in this forum and that's all you'll find for the past 2 weeks. Half of what I said is for that reason. The other half I admit is probably stereotypes I've gotten from US media.
