anyone been down to rosarito recently

and lived to tell about it

seriously though, i was reading an article about the tourism in the la times and its supposedly become a ghost town. Wouldnt mind heading down for some RR during spring break before san diego for kaskade/chris lake/MLB opening day.

Rosarito beach hotel rooms start at $49, so you know they are hurting for business...

They are pretty strict about the max 2 persons per room. You wear wristbands.

Most of the killing has been their own people. Only time you will die is if you get caught in cross-fire, Tijuana and that other city that borders Texas is where most of the killing is happening.

Posted by bigperf on Mar-16-2009 00:40:

ciudad juarez is the other city.
ya i know that the nicer places are all about wristbands and no bringing girls back without paying for them to get a wristband. I'm not worried about the violence im more worried that it would be a ghost town. It's more fun when its vibrant.

I wonder if all the surfers have abandoned baja too as I was kicking around the idea of heading down there (I used to surf alot down while attending UCLA).... I'm thinking decent waves with no crowds... yeah right, I bet tons of San Diego gringo surfers still go down to upper baja... hell so should you!!

I don't think you'll get your head choped off but you may want to stay off the roads after dark

Adios Amigo!!!

you would think...but thats why i posted, in hopes of someone who is actually going down there in the next couple of weeks or was just down this past weekend can let me know how it is.

I spent all of last week in Mexicali (the capital of Baja), and everything was business as usual. But I'm not sure about Rosarito.

Two weeks ago some reporter from CNN's Anderson Cooper was broadcasting live from there and said it was a ghostown. However, this is pre-Spring Break and on a Thursday. He was inside Papa's & Beer and said that usually that time around there's around 1000 people at the club, and when he was there, there was none!!!

Check out these links from CNN from two weeks ago.

I'm not really certified to give my opinion on tourism but...maybe more people would go to Mexico if:

A) The police force wasn't the most corrupt group of cunts on the planet.

B) Drug dealers stopped murdering people.

C) Mexican gangs stopped kidnapping people.

Just some thoughts.

I have been going down to Rosarito several times in the last few months, and i can tell you first hand its noticeably slower right now.

My buddies brother is down there, so we go 1-2 times a month to hook him up with cash/clothes and mainly to uplift his spirit and show support. Well he has told us that it has slowed down, and people are hurting. He works for security at a church right now, because they already tried breaking in and stealing the 1990 386 computer that they have lol. We went out on a saturday night with him down there, and it was DEAD every club we went to had only a small number of people.

Yes its no where near summer, but still Rosarito would have a decent crowd this close to spring break.

Nah, the surfer's and "baja dirt" bro's are still around, granted not as much as before; but they are still there.

Mexicali and Tijuana are always business as usual, Rosarito is not on the same level with those 2. Rosarito is mostly tourism hence the reason why its dead...

I think thats why the US cautioned spring breakers about Mexico. It was a hint for Mexico to get there shit together. If tourism stops, those party locations are going to take a big hit financially.

Cancun doesn't seem to be hurting right now. They say business is UP!!! But then again, that city is away from all the trouble.

thanks for the info woody! If anyone heads down in the next couple of weeks or knows of anyone who does, please find out if it was busy.
I appreciate it.

yep, Cancun's "antidrug chief" lasted a whole day on the job

Posted by ninetyninej on Mar-17-2009 21:33:

Shame really because Cancun is legit.

I wanted to take Isa there this year around my birthday and show her the Mayan ruins (ie. Chichen Itza) but we have put that off indefinitely because we don't want to get dead.

Instead we may go to NYC for a week (slightly lower chance of kidnapping and decapitation)

Posted by Nerologic on Mar-17-2009 21:42:

Yeah Cancun is also kind of hurting.

All the headlines that its been "drug turf violence at all time high" with in the past few months is hurting its tourism.

Spring break isn't going to be so popin, just google it and you will see countless new articles warning people about going down there.

Sucks that all this is going on, all the people that rely on tourism wont get that much needed money anymore.

My family has a house in Rosarito and has been advised by the locals to stay off the boulevard at night. They've gone down a couple times in the past few months, but only go out into town during the day time. They were advised strictly to stay off the boulevard at night and were told they were crazy if they thought they should do otherwise.

It's funny cause the best solution to this mess would be to just give up and legalize it in the US (well, legalizing weed alone would probably do the job, but hey why not).

Posted by DjWoody on Mar-18-2009 16:12:

Don't trip Silvia. I have friends who just came back from Cancun this week and they said it's fine. No drama there.
