Plane crash in Montana claims 17 lives

Sun Mar. 22 2009 7:18:04 PM

The Associated Press

BUTTE, Mont. Seventeen people, including several children, were killed when a small plane crashed Sunday in central Montana, a U.S. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.

Spokesman Mike Fergus said the single engine turboprop plane departed from Orville, Calif., and that the pilot had filed a flight plan showing a final destination of Bozeman.

Fergus said the pilot cancelled his flight plan at some point and headed for Butte. The plane crashed about 150 metres from the airport while attempting to land and caught fire.

Fergus said preliminary reports indicate the dead included numerous children. He said there were no known fatalities on the ground.

"We think that it was probably a ski trip for the kids," Fergus said.

Fergus said the plane was registered to Eagle Cap Leasing Inc. in Enterprise, Ore., but he didn't know who was operating the plane.

Calls to local authorities were not immediately returned.

Fergus said the Pilatus PC-12 aircraft was manufactured in 2001. He said the National Transportation Safety Board has an investigator located in Butte who was thought to be on scene. The FAA's flight standards investigator was en route.

The plane crashed in Butte's Holy Cross Cemetery at about 2:30 p.m. MDT, The Montana Standard reported in a story posted on its Web site.

Kenny Gulick, 14, who lives near the airport, told the newspaper that the plane was clearly in trouble.

"All of a sudden the pilot lost control and went into a nosedive," Gulick told the newspaper. "He couldn't pull out in time and crashed into the trees of the cemetery."

Martha and Steve Guidoni were near the cemetery at the time of the crash.

"We had just came out of the gas station, across from the cemetery, and watched it crashed. It just nose-dived into the ground," Martha Guidoni told the newspaper. "My husband went over there to see if he could do anything."

I guess a celebrity had to be on the plane to get some RIPs in this thread.

Yeah I heard about this, so sad.

One prop plane I think though.

Also in the news... a two-seater Cessna 152 plane crashed into a cemetary near Gander NFLD.

The Tiger Search and Rescue Team has recovered 300 bodies so far and expect the number to climb as digging continues into the evening.

Very sad

It seems to be getting scarier and scarier to fly....just doesn't seem as safe as it use to with all these incidents in the news lately

Posted by LKD on Mar-23-2009 01:45:

way too many plane crashes off late...

Posted by djshan on Mar-23-2009 01:58:

I dont understand why they close their flight plan in the air. (If you close the flight plan, search and rescue is never initiated. search and rescue is initiated if the flight plan is not closed on time. It can be closed after you land).

Unfortunately, it will take a while to find out what caused the accident.

Fly safe~

Well, flying is the safest method to travel these days. It all depends on how well the pilot's are trained. Canada is the best when it comes to training pilots. Im saying this, becuase im a flight instructor myself.

Air travel is still statistically safer than driving a car sure, but there's no small fender benders when it comes to airplanes...you're probably fucked if something goes wrong.

well the number of people that die worldwide by car crashes on a daily basis does outweigh plane/train/bus/boat fatalities....quite crazy when you think about it.

Posted by gummybear on Mar-23-2009 04:45:

for some reason i am more afraid to fly as i get older...i'm gonna have to pop some pills next month when i fly to punta cana..

RIP to all the peeps who lost their lives...very sad..

how do 17 people die aboard a plane that seats like 12 people?

despite this coming from a credible source, the fact that they quote a 14 y/o and also dont fix the grammar (which is usually done) "We had just came out of the gas station", seems fishy...

Could be a weight and balance issue. Aircrft was probably overweight.

sad news

A Fed ex plane crash and burned in Japan too, planned tip over in its side as it hit the tarmac. Pretty crazy :\

Posted by failsafe on Mar-23-2009 20:24:

A PC-12 in Canada is limited to 9 passengers and two pilots under single engine IFR regulations. I'm not sure what the American regs say, but even if they differed it seems like too many people in the plane. I have about 300hrs flying PC-12s from years ago, so I have a pretty good working knowledge of the plane and it's capabilities. There could be an exemption if many of the deceased are under 2yrs old, then they wouldn't be counted as taking a seat.

DjShan: where are you instructing now?

Skipper: There certainly is lots of "fender bender" kind of incidents that happen every day. You just don't hear about them because you're not involved in the industry, and it didn't end up in a news friendly fire ball. WestJet took a 737 off the end of the runway in Ottawa last winter. No one died, no one got hurt, but the plane was stuck in a snow bank. I bet ya not even 5% of people on hear heard about that one. Super close call, but no one heard about it. WestJet also took a plane off the runway in Thunder Bay last winter. Didn't hear about that one either right? Porter flew into severe turbulence this winter, had to divert to Montreal to have passengers taken away by ambulance. Didn't hear about that one either right?

Lots of stuff happens every day. As a general rule, unless it ends up in a fire ball, or Air Canada is involved, it's never reported.
