What would you do if you had no Internet access for a year?

How would you use your spare time? How would your life be different?

Just a thought experiment...

I'd probably be a marathon runner by the end of the year.

I'd have the best grades in the entire university. Evenn better than the crazy chinese guys sleeping in the library.

By the end of the year I would probably have made at least two or three albums' worth of music. Like Meat187, I would also probably have much better grades.

Oh, and I certainly would have finished the couple of short stories I'm working on and possibly even written a novel.

Seriously, I should just cancel my connection.
Also, the time I spend on the net is directly proportional to the work I have to do. Anybody else notice that?

I would be buying several different newspapers, calling friends more, have better grades, and make a lot more music. Definitely would be going outside more too.

That sounds so awesome when you put it that way, but I could not give up the amount of information transfer that the Internet provides.

Of course. The Internet is the ultimate in procrastination aids.

I know, I'm addicted to the information flow, too. I think humans are wired to get pleasure from social information, which is what the net provides. It's really just a little trickle of pleasure, IMO, but it's just enough to keep me hooked. I have tried to cut myself off for a couple weeks before and I feel "deprived" in some way.

But when you think about, do you really need information about guys in Florida setting each other on fire or how Slylee's bf bought new shoes?

Nope. But such information gives me a kind of amusement or pleasure even though it's really utterly inconsequential to me. It's that reliable sense of mild amusement that I'm addicted to, personally. It's a lot like watching TV, I think, but with a much greater range of options and a little bit of interactivity added in, making it that much more attractive.

i'd read a lot more. but losing internet is like losing electricity. civilization in my house breaks down.

Texas!

Posted by ibizzzaaa on Mar-23-2009 18:14:

I would read the vast majority of books on the ever-growing "to read" list, expand my vocabulary knowledge to the extent of never reaching for the dictionary when reading 19th Century English literature, grow endurant enough to bike my way up a steep hill without having a near-heart attack, earn at least a B in that advanced calculus class which I ended up dropping, greatly improve my literary analysis skills, become a connoisseur of the French New Wave films, learn how to mix records flawlessly, become a better photographer, start learning how to play upright bass, start a Food Not Bombs chapter in Charlotte....

Fuck.

Why doesn't everyone just say the truth and go with watch more TV? Not using the internet isn't going to turn anyone into a crazy motivated superman.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Mar-23-2009 18:17:

I'd find something else to fritter my time away on and so would each and every one of you.

Don't blame the internet.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Mar-23-2009 18:18:

And so come the cynics!

Yeah that is what you say now, but let's cancel your internet and see what happens.

Oh, I don't blame the internet. I definitely hold myself as the one responsible for so much time wasting.
