well this sucks...

woke up this morning. ate my breakfast. head to my truck. turn it on and the weirdest fucking noise is coming out. it sounded like one of those rice rockets with the high tech mufflers.

I take a look around and look underneath the truck and then i see it... actually, i don't see it. Some ******s stole my catalytic converter

take it to the shop and the mechanic tells me that auto thieves will do that. steal 5 - 8 catalytic converters a night. supposedly there is platnum inside the converters which converts some bull shit into other bull shit ??????

so if you park on the street like i do, be careful.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

OK, it really isn't that funny. It's just that, well, uh... yeah, it's fucking hilarious. Sorry for your inconvenience though...

Fortunately you can just to go Pick A Part in Sun Valley and take a catalytic converter off one of the many Ford Rangers in their lot.

ass muncher. (i needed that)

i got it at the shop right now. i couldnt really drive the truck due to all the noise it was making. i'm just hoping i don't get raped on the costs.

Posted by dj mccord on Mar-24-2009 16:27:

wtf....

Are you serious? I can't imagine just hijaking someones cat converter. That seems retarded. Although, it would be funny to see a couple of guys running down the street carrying 6-8 of those huh?

Posted by 2tall on Mar-24-2009 16:31:

this happens quite a bit, i think toyota trucks are particularly easy. there was a bunch of these thefts mid-day in our office park parking lots a few months ago.

Posted by bigherm on Mar-24-2009 16:39:

a ring of thieves got caught in my town. they were from vallejo. nothing but toyota cars and trucks. had homemade pipe cutters and everything. bastards

thats what the mechanic was saying. there have been a lot of thefts in the past year of cat converters.

thats funny cuz i'm from vallejo.

Posted by HotDogWater on Mar-24-2009 16:47:

Happened to my little bro not too long ago -- sucks.
At least you can get a cheap universal replacement.
Maybe have the muffler shop tack weld it on to make it a bit harder to get off

hillside or crest side?

Posted by Waterproofpaper on Mar-24-2009 17:13:

Yeah my girl got hers stolen also. We were lucky enough my friend is a mazda technician and we took a cat from one of the cars that was gonna be crushed. The O2 sensors werent going off so its all good. We ended up selling the car and buting the new 09 fit though haha! She was driving a 4runner. The job takes about 1 minute to do.

Apparently in mission viejo, a dealership was hit and most of the cats were stolen out of new trucks. Those thiefs have mad balls to do it on a dealership.

Posted by ReclusNdangrmnt on Mar-24-2009 17:23:

I'm from Vallejo, moved down here when I was like 5...But from what I've heard and seen...Good call on my parents' part

But yeah, they get the converters for the platinum, which is more valuable than gold.

Posted by bas on Mar-24-2009 17:31:

You deserve it for driving a truck.

Posted by alan on Mar-24-2009 17:43:

sorry to hear that Billy.

last year, my car got broken into twice in one month (once in the parking lot of Monday Social@Nacional, the other in front of my cop-friends house in Eagle rock), both times, they just took the radio!

well,i solved it and got them back now by never getting a radio since then

maybe you shouldnt get a catalytic converter anymore so nothng to steal...smart ey?

sorry to hear that...

got my Integra stolen about 4 years ago back in Silverlake, got it back after 2 days, then the radio was stolen a week after a new one was installed. bought a freaking great alarm system, and garaged my car after that, chained & locked up good. only took it out on sunday drives

2 years ago my x got her subaru WRX stolen. the cops arrested 3 guys who has a shop in san dimas, there were about to chop up my x's car when the cops arrived. 4 cars are inside the garage and a bunch of parts. total amount was about $650,000 in parts and accesories.

mofo thieves should burn in hell!!!!

now i just take the BART its safer and less headache

Ugh, sorry about your situation. I hate Hollyweird! Luckily, I have gated parking.

Posted by DaveT on Mar-24-2009 18:10:

First, wouldn't Comprehensive Coverage on your insurance covert his? It's theft, right?

Anyhow, catalytic converters can have platinum, palladium, rhodium or gold in them.

Takes 1-2 minutes to remove.

And metal recyclers by them for $150-$200.

My I recommend....

He drives a Ranger, which is only a truck by sight. It's actually just a squared-off Ford Escort.

if you want to save some cashola.

go to a generic mexican or asian muffler shop and buy a cheap generic 100 dollar cat, have them weld it on and for around 150 you will be back on the road. and oem cat will cost you 800+ from toyota. if you have time, ebay is your friend they sell them for cheap and better then the generic ones.

dont buy the hype that YOU NEED a OEM factory toyota cat, its BS they tell you just to up sell you. they tell you that its CA law and you need a carb/bar one with a stamp blah blah blah. you dont need it.

someone tried stealing mine off of my 00 4runner, luckily i was pulling up in my g/f's car at 230am and i chased the guy away.

he had a cordless sawzall and had already cut a little bit of the piping, but i just had the pipe welded the day after and everything was alright.

mid size (95-02) toyota trucks and suv's get targeted the most because they have the biggest cats, i am sure your truck is a late 90's tacoma or early 00's?

Posted by skell on Mar-24-2009 18:24:

Yep, this happens a lot. Almost as much as these meth-heads running around stealing copper wiring.

Posted by able.h on Mar-24-2009 18:53:

bah it feels like there are more and more people breaking into cars lately.. i think it has everything to do with the economy

a friend of mine just got his car broken into yesterday, he left his wallet on the driver seat, left the car for about an hour, came back and the driver seat window all shattered...

2 weeks ago, another friend of mine parked her car at her workplace 11AM, came back 2PM for a break, got her car broken into.. lost her MacBook + Bag value around $5G total, luckily the person didn't steal an SLR camera worth another $5G..

bad moves for both IMO, shouldn't have left anything valueable in the car

Billy........
I'd be sorry but that's just fucking funny. Almost as funny as when my car got stolen from my garage only to be found a week later 2 blocks from my parents house with random shit from other peoples houses and some empty Steel Reserve cans in it. I actually made money on that deal though.
