new appreciation of minimalist trance

I have recently begun to dig into the realm of minimalist stuff and simply am a drummer at heart, played since I was 3yrs old so I appreciate rhythm so I am wondering from anyone more versed in whats out there, what are some minimalist tracks with either really sick (meaning good, funky etc) beats or baselines. I love great rhythm parts whether base or drums , even piano is a percussion instrument technically. Any thoughts ?

always exposing myself to new things...

Like children?

Wtf is 'minimalist trance'? Am I behind the times?

Posted by orbit4 on Mar-31-2009 09:43:

hehe um I guess just search the term 'minimalist' on youtube and sample a bunch of stuff to get the idea. Not sure what to say . Minimal is a concept better left to music than words IMHO

'Minimal' describes something entirely different to trance.

Mmmm if u consider "minimalist" everything with a Kick+1hi hat+a little melody sometimes.... well I even don't consider that Trance...

Btw, something lovely to be reminded in the "deep" smooth side of Trance could be Madoka Vira Two remix to Pole folder's track called "Protected" if I'm not wrong with the name.. that's a sort of "minimal voyage" in the sense that the aren't so much instruments, fx etc in it..

Uh... no. Trance is built up in a monotonous and repetitive way, introducing only a few or no new elements through a longer period of the song. That's what minimalism is all about, if you're looking for a simple answer.

Edit: Redd posted an excellent example of this. Good job.

Oh that original definition of trance is completley lost on today's generation, spoon fed with supersaws, ultra mega breakdowns of several minutes and over-the-top-instant-gratification melodies

On the topic at hand though. I think I remember a similar question being asked and some nice examples from Zoo Brazil appeared as You Tube clips...can't seem to find them right now however...

There is minimalist trance, it was played by tiesto and AVB @ ultra in miami on the main stage. Its like trance with that blip blop bleep crap n da background lol...

Wow, I've seriously been away for way too long... minimalist trance?? What's next?!

I seriously need to check it out.. I am open to almost any change

There's no such thing as minimalist trance, or even mininal trance. If you define trance as you've just described, then it's a redundant tag anyway.

Minimal trance however..

Posted by smellyblack on Mar-31-2009 16:40:

do i know some examples of "minimal trance".

not really, but i guess some of the kompakt catalog could be interpreted as this to people that really feel the need to label things to be able to enjoy them.

If the track is not over produced like most trance tracks, i can't see why this could not exist. Minimalism does not mean bleeps and blops.

Man i hate genre tags sometimes.

Hey, I am just trying to make sense of what he said. lol

Posted by PETRAN on Mar-31-2009 18:12:

No no its not minimal trance...its Neo-Trance! (lol)Yeah some people have referred to a few kompakt artists (actully, releases) in this way. Its minimal techno actually but it is a little more hypnotic, melodic and sounscapei-ish e.g.

From the countless and pointless minimal/glitch-techno/micro-house garbage out there i actually like these more "atmospheric" releases. Its still within the minimal genre though, there are not substantial releases to create a new seperate sub-genre such as "neo-trance" (or minimal-trance as you say).

Posted by smellyblack on Mar-31-2009 18:27:

i have always hated the word "neo trance"

fuck you james holden.

Posted by delusional on Mar-31-2009 18:57:

Those you tubed videos is not what I have heard, could be possible minimal trance remix only in the bags of the likes of tiesto...armin...etc...

Posted by smellyblack on Mar-31-2009 18:58:

lmao

ill lmao your face foo

I guess by saying minimal trance I am not necessarily trying to say its a legimate genre or sub genre, just using two terms that if combined I think simply anyone who knows them seperately would get what I am aiming for I heard a couple long mixes with a couple pretty good tracks in them but I don't recognize the artist or tracks to know what to pursue . Some of the examples so far are pretty much what I was thinking though.

Posted by smellyblack on Mar-31-2009 19:23:

if you are looking for percussion, some melody, piano ec download this

http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...1&forumid=73&s=

i would not call it minimal though, although dj tools are used in the spirit of the way most mnml dj's tend to mix.

/shameless.

So what about this one, why yes or why no?

Posted by Zak McKracken on Mar-31-2009 21:32:

good beats is not minimal, try breakbeat or dnb, dubstep etc. or the new Prodigy album, be sure to get the version with the bonus tracks caus the last two are fucking brilliant: "Black Smoke" & "Fighter Beat"

Posted by nefardec on Apr-01-2009 00:20:

repetitive does not mean minimal

i dont know that i have heard many trance tracks that i would consider to be minimalist, and I am considering classic trance as well.

i think trance music has its origins in additive composition, adding percussive and hypnotic rhythmic layers, arpeggiation, etc to techno tracks. So even in their origin, trance tracks were not really created with a minimalist sentiment. The sentiment was hypnosis and groove, and later on we all know what became of trance, and it's certainly not minimalist.

I do think trance is capable of being created with minimalist sentiments, and I'd like to at least hear what this would sound like.

There is some detroit techno in the rob hood vein that approaches trance music, especially releases on the Tresor label, which you might be able to call minimal trance.

try ricardo villalobos - 808 the bassqueen.

not really trance, but puts me into one
