DEFINITELY needs more cowbell
Maybe it is The KLF. Either way, we need someone else to do it now to test the theory.
What's the story, morning glory?
In their book "How To Have A Number One The Easy Way", the KLF claimed that great music had nothing to do with originality or craft, and was all about the charisma and personality of the musician shining through. They claimed that one day someone would make a track that was just a 4/4 kick drum all the way through, and that somebody else would then copy them. One of these kick-drums would sound better than the other, simply because the charisma of one musician was greater.
They were probably joking, or exaggerating in typically hyperbolic, KLF style. You can read the book online for free if you search for it on Google.
Is this available digitally too ?

it's actually cool to hear in a john cage kind of way, because you get to hear 'everything else' coming through, all of the electrical noise and environmental noise.
i also read a paper once called 'percussion and transition' which talked about certain frequencies of repetitive drum hits that induce trance states in humans. id have to look it up again, but im pretty sure it was about this tempo.
and like system-j said of the klf, in a way, if you played this out or saw this played live, you would almost certainly see the personality of the musician or the deejay more clearly in their reaction to what's going on, the way they play it and use it, etc.
even if they were joking it is interesting
The only person who would be interested in this would be your bank manager. He is wondering why you paid 10 for a looped 909 bassdrum.
Nothing more than an overpriced DJing tool. Don't know what the big deal is.

Then, when somebody else brings one out using exactly the same bass drum sound and at the same beats per minute (B.P.M.), we will all be able to tell which is the best, which inspires the dance floor to fill the fastest, which has the most sex and the most soul. There is no doubt, one will be better than the other. What we are basically saying is, if you have anything in you, anything unique, what others might term as originality, it will come through whatever the component parts used in your future Number One are made up from." |
Fuckin TUNE!

It's more of a claim that the personality of the musician can literally be felt in exactly the same sound, which seems impossible. Here's the original quote: "We await the day with relish that somebody dares to make a dance record that consists of nothing more than an electronically programmed bass drum beat that continues playing the fours monotonously for eight minutes.
