Re: Breakins etc...
Do you have your equipment insured under your renter's or homeowner's insurance? If not, I'd do that right away. I have my equipment insured under my homeowner's policy, an alarm (keeps the insurance costs down), and a large "Beware of Dog" sign on the gate leading to the back entrances of my house.

Do you have a lot of gear? Sounds like people are casing the place waiting for an opportunity to steal yo' shit son.
People hanging around sounds like casing houses especially that kit in your nieghbours garden. Blocked off in traffic? - try living in LA - you'd have a paranoid meltdown
The lock paint chipped on the inside could be a result of movement. Created by someone trying to jimmy the lock from the outside (basically the lock housing rubbing on the paint from playing with the outer/external housing).
Get at least some window/door stickers saying you got an alarm system, get the dog sign, maybe a fake/real camera. At least these will show that you're on to them. Other than that real deterrants such as a real alarm, a dog, electrified fences, proximity explosives are the only real way to protect.
Seroiusly, theives are afraid of getting caught and most are opportunists so just show that there is security and show clearly it's not going to be an easy job for them and they will think twice.
Like cryophonik said. Personally in addition, I have cameras, 2 dogs, a 45 and a AR15. Plus someone is always home.
I'm imagining that coming home and finding your doorknob/lock fixture pried is a little scary. I wouldn't think, however, that thieves, trying to break into your home would go to the trouble of mounting a probing reconnaissance (cutting you off in traffic) of your "defensive" driving habits. If there's a conspiracy afoot, there's more to this story than simple thievery.
As for people in yours and your neighbor's back-yards - have you spoken with your neighbors? Maybe they were having some work done to their home or are curious about the people, themselves.
What city/country is this? What kind of neighborhood do you live in (Upscale/suburban/gated/et al)? Is your rig so loud it attracts unwanted attention? Are you a well-known musician (or a well known anybody) in your area? Who are your friends and acquaintances?
I guess I'd probably be alarmed if that stuff was happening to me, too. I'd definitely have the digital camera out and be doing recon of my own.

This has just reminded me I really want to do some research into ways of protecting the home.
I reckon there must be some really clever, cheap and easy ways to detter people - just needs some thought.
Because guns are illegal in the UK I have to make do with the thick end of a pool cue and can of deodorant by the door! I'm also gonna get a crossbow since they were legal last time I checked.
It's sad but I also would kinda like to be robbed because I love the idea of fighting off a burglar spraying deodorant in his eye and beating the shit out of him with my pool cue.
Reading 2600 freaked me out a bit when I read about how to make a bump key. If you know your locks you really have some powerful knowledge.
A tangent, but interesting topic sucked me in.
Lock picking is not very hard once you learn how they work
Go to the store, but a door lock, saw it down the center and observe how it functions when you put the key in. Then its just a matter of trial and error for that type of lock.
