I am not 100% sure but laws of pilotage and other things related to portage and things like that vary from state to state.

Are you planning to sail this on the great lakes? Is this boat ocean going, or even close shore going?

The thing also is sailing up and down the Atlantic coast is very different the further you go. Waters down around the tip of Florida, in the Keys and stuff are dead calm for the most part and the draft of your boat can be very shallow, same as a lake going sail boat, but if you are sailing in the north you will want something with a deeper draft as waters can be much more choppy and unpredictable.

I would advise getting some training if you havent on how to sail in open ocean or rough water conditions before you try and go out to the US or something.

Wait so whats your sailing experience as of right now?

Posted by Slylee on Apr-04-2009 19:01:

my uncle lives on a sailboat in the carribbean. that's about all i can offer to this thread. lol

oh and sailing involves a lot of work and being in tune with the earth and shit like that. i mean you have to be the type of person who can look at the moon and tell what phase it's in. my uncle is like that and so is my mom even though she doesn't sail.

Posted by Vivid Boy on Apr-04-2009 19:15:

sailing is like sex to these people, they love it

Id never own a boat. Its just a hole in the water you throw your money into. I used to do service on sailboats/yachts. The amount of cash these things consume is retarded even for regular maintenance. Throw in the fact it will be on the ocean and you get a lot more corrosion. Id rather someone else own the boat and I just go out with them. They get to deal with cost of ownership and I get to enjoy the fun part. Most recreational owners only take them out for a very small part of the year and the rest of the time the boat costs you even when its not in use.

It'll be a learning experience.

I tied knots in cubscouts

Like it can't be that hard

Put up the sail, take down the sale, turn the keel, if anything goes wrong start padling. or break out the outboard.

Don't run aground, don't swim with sharks if you got a paper cut,

watch out for bigger boats (and don't go anywhere near them)

if you are going to tip take a deep breath (it may be your last)

don't try to steer anywhere at night unless you are damn far out. and have an alarm on your depth gauge.

Take GPS regularly or learn astronomy and cary a sextant.

Stay within sight of the coast... always.

If it is stormy consider passing that day at a port.

etc... Once I get the rigging up I think I'd have a few easy days..

It is pretty simple though.. don't let the sail tear, steer the boat in the right direction and know how much water you have under you. Go in the right direction...

is that pretty much it?

Oh and if the coast gaurd flags you stop. (errr if you can -its water)

Bahaha you will fail.

Can you tie a bowline behind your back in 40mph wind standing up?
If you even hesitated to say yes, you got some work to do.

My dad drove his boat from Germany where he bought it to Ireland, that was a bitch of a drive im sure. And he almost sunk only once, and he left it in Amsterdam for 2 weeks, his friend eat a spacecake and flaked out.

So my advise is to sail to Amsterdam and hire a full time lady whore skipper and duck take dildos to both her arms.

Many thanks
Mickey

You do not need a boat. The " how hard can it be?" comment killed you. Its very involved and takes years to learn all the ins and outs. Especially with a sail boat. You are out of your element on this .

Posted by pmoisse on Apr-04-2009 20:30:

I think this is nuts, but power to you for having the stones to really jump into this. If you pull it off, I think it will be one hell of an experience for you.

Agreed, I've been around sailboats all my life and I'd be nervous as hell trying something like this. Knowing how to sail is one thing, knowing what to do without thinking about it when shit gets real is a whole other thing.

Where in Florida are you planning your trip?

Years to learn going out every weekend or two? That is what 60 days within two months of hard saiing I'll be living breathing eating and sleeping sail. Arrrr.

My second middle name will be Braihney.

Yes...you do need to worry about failing.

Reading up on sailing isnt the same.

Yes, years to learn. You will depend on the wind. Its inconsistent. Reading up on sailing is not enough. You will have a small motor but I wouldnt plan on going too far from shore. I hope you have cash saved, just because the wind is free doesnt mean boating is. You realize you are sooooo far over your head you can not compute right?
