Exclamation Professional Studio Work ?

Hi !

The poll : how much would you pay for working yourself in professional studio with high-end hardware and software (per day, week, month) ?

Cheers !

Probably about 150-200E a day. That's the bare minimum I would need to earn in order to be able to support myself fully. At 150E a day it would be 1700E a month after all income tax has been deducted.

Edit: I miscalculated a bit. I should make 600E a week to get to the 1700E a month which comes down to about 120E a day. But that would be the bare minimum.

Isn't the question how much are you willing to pay to use a "high end" studio?

first of all this depends on how you define "High End" 60 channels of SSL, Bricasti, NEVE & API outboard & TAD monitoring sounds high end to me. A MAC with a euphonics controller and some WAVES software isn't. also how many booths?!? including or excluding engineer(s) ?!?

Studio prices are cheap as hell at the minute. Around 15 - 25 an hour to use a high-end studio with neve desks or similar with engineer included.

exactly and i would only go there to track REHEARSED vocals, or track acoustic instruments (being in/out within 1 hours)

unless you need to track your band and you can't mix you no longer really need a studio once you've finished tracking.

I disagree... I'm POSITIVE that mixing down on a nice SSL console will sound better than a bounce out of a software mixer. Correct though that you probably don't NEED it.

im actually working for a few studios now in LA.

the going rate absolute CHEAPEST amount is 250$ a day without the assistant engineer included... Now getting the studio to let you use the room without an assistant engineer goodluck! you can tack on another 10-20$ an hour to that fee.

And it 's still incredibly cheap. Most people don't work for less than 50$ an hour in my country.oops, so imagine an engineer who paid 6 000+$ for his SAE training and grade. Those guys need to eat too.

Snap - I work in a studio in LA too. Rates in general at pro studios have dropped to unbelievably low levels but the major ones still command high daily rates. Also, a lot of studios charge depending on what you use there. For instance some will give a certain amount of PTHD rigs for the rate but to use more (effectively channel count) you pay extra.

Often you pay for the expertise that comes with that studio. You got to a top studio and pay good money, you're going to get top talent (assistants, 1st's/ mix engineers etc.).

Smaller project studios (still "pro" working studios) will virtually negotiate all the time, especially for down time. Middle of the night or very early morning around other paying projects will get you even better rates. Also, if you make it a regular (like twice a month) will get you better rates too.

i am one of those engineers who paid 6k for his training but I went to MI haha

i find what works for me is to bring clientle to a studio and take my own rate though... instead of just working under a studio for like 10$ an hour.

that way wherever I go, my work goes, and i have built strong relationships with the artists.

How's that working out for you? I been thinking about doing that.

I'll have my certificate at the end of this semester, and I don't think I even broke $1000 for it. Plus I got to play with SSL boards, that's always fun

Where you get it from? I'm in SoCal too.

It's good, It def improved my electronica sound. I also learned many things that I dont think were neccessary (post production movie things). was it worth it... im not sure. i didn't really follow it as a career after i exited. Working in a studio wasn't what I wanted to do with that education at first. In fact my first studio gig.. i was the only guy working there who had actually gone to school but we had big name clients like NIN, weezer, Sarah B etc. So based on that Im not too sure if I would recommend the schooling.. It all depends on how fast you want to learn it, and how much effort you want to have to put in yourself. I don't think it would be impossible to just go work at a pro studio for a few hours a week for a couple months and really get to learn the equipment. You just gotta find a studio willing to cater to you. A lot of those guys really do like to teach and take people "under their wing" though.

I C... See, a lot of times I feel lost because aside from DJ'ing I have no musical knowledge/training. I don't know jack shit about theory, or how to play an instrument. I'm a computer geek, but besides that, I'm lost. Hehe I'm self teaching my self a lot of things, and learning lots from this very forum.

I really don't have any friends nearby that are into production that live nearby. Rachael Starr offered to help me out and teach a few things, but she's always on tour. AM FM Alexander offered too, but he's in Arizona. And the one person who was showing me the strings, Mike Lord, moved to the Phillipines. So I'm lonely in OC. hehehe

There's so much I wanna learn, I'm hungry for music knowledge.

Haha, that's really awesome! How did you pull that off?

Posted by Storyteller on Apr-08-2009 14:58:

Got pretty damn lucky. Searched days for an interesting internship. I gave up on finding an internship in a studio.

Then I found one that seemed fun (magazine/advertisement company). I sent them an email and because of my appealing resume and interests I was in. They're actually making room for me as they can't have any more interns under normal circumstances. Anyway I'll be doing a lot of stuff with SAE and Red Bull for the Red Bull Music Academy , which are my employers' partners on this project. My main focus will be engineering in a mobile studio which was formerly used by radio 538 (big dutch FM radio for those that aren't from these parts), doing interviews, making programs and podcasts. In other time I'll be working in the SAE studio they'll be building for this project
