New York clubbing - recommendations please

Ok, I'm going to New York for 5 nights in December and would really appreciated a load of recommendations on decent proper club nights over there.

Music I'm into is techno and house (tech, prog or minimal). I've heard that Francois K has a club over there and would love to check that out.

I'm stopping in Times Square but traveling a distance to the venue aint really an issue :-)

So.. bring on some recommendations please

Cielo is probably a place you might wanna check out..

Try posting this thread in the NY section of TA, it will be a lot more helpful.

Time Out has a pretty comprehensive listing.

I recommend Sullivan Room and Love based on personal experience. Bunker in Brooklyn seems to be THE place for minimal and techno, but I haven't gone there yet. I've heard mixed things about Cielo... Stay away from Pacha though.

Love by far has the best sound system in my opinion. It is also by far the least convenient club - there is so little space to move ANYWHERE in the club whatsoever that it quickly becomes a chore to line up for ANYTHING if the club is packed.

My personal favourite so far is Le Poisson Rouge. Located in a very cosy part of Bleecker Street, with a nicely varied program catering to many different kinds of music.

Santos Party House seems to have made a habit of pulling in oldschool heroes recently (Moodymann, Egyptian Lover, Larry Heard, Farley Jackmaster Funk and so on). Go there if the lineup is good, it has a good mix of rave basement and comfort.

no, he doesnt, but he plays an awesome weekly party called 'deep space' at cielo on little west 12th st

first i'd shy away from focusing on 'clubs'. you need to be looking for parties, not clubs. (as far as destination goes)

also, you're going in december, which means actually a lot could change.

generally i'd stay away from cielo's parties, because it is overpriced and tends to be filled with bottles & models. you'll just hear beatport top ten prog, techno, fart house. GENERALLY (i am talking about most thursday, friday, saturday parties) You should still check the calendar because occasionally there are gems. and of course there are other parties like Louie Vega's roots party.

As Sand Leaper said, Santos Party House is quickly becoming one of my favorite joints. It's run by pop/metal musician Andrew W K. lol one of my favorite parties there is mister saturday night which is thrown by justin carter. if you ever see a party with his name on it as promoter, it's probably going to be good. guy knows his shit and is a good deejay in his own right. he also throws a loft party called 'easy lover' that you might want to check out.

once a month there is a really good techno party called 'the bunker'. it used to be weekly, but now it's monthly and as a weregild, the lineups are doubled and the party goes until 6 am. it's pretty awesome: http://www.beyondbooking.com/thebunker/

le poisson rouge again has generally good events

studio b in brooklyn has some really great parties. you will find a lot of old-school parties through by REWIND, acid house from DJ Pierre, Green Velvet, real techno by Frankie Bones, Juan Atkins, etc and also some live shows by projects like the field, four tet, booka shade, etc

bar 13 near union square is the usual home of the blk|market parties, which bring in generally good house and techno talent. however i fucking hate bar 13 lol

love in greenwich village occasionally has good parties. there is a regular dubstep party there as well. sometimes FK does deep space at Love. I personally don't like the venue that much. poorly designed circulation.

look out for underground parties. loft parties, mobile parties like ReSolute and minimoo (which will be back i believe).

I would recommend to stay away from anything in chelsea (ie pacha and the like). You will find only David Guetta, Junior Vasquez, and JP and a ton of shirtless jersey guidos and drugged up chinese immigrants. maybe that's your thing, i don't know lol.

again, check it out in november, because a lot can change

yep

makes sense now, right? and did you know he collaborates with lee perry? one of the reasons why the crowd at santos is so awesome.

i went there for nicky siano's party and it was all the old underground disco crowd, complete with tambourines and balloons.

actual promotion for party

actual sign from santos

Yeah, I remember those signs from the Moodymann-gig last week. One was this huge paper with "MOVE ALONG" in big bold letters, to make sure people weren't clogging up the doorway next to the bar. More clubs could learn from that, me thinks.
