Getting a friend into EDM

Ok so this person knows a very little bit about this music but quite likes it.

I'm looking for classic live sets, promos, albums, essential mixes etc. I'm talking the best of the best in the past 9 years.

Mostly looking for House/Techno/Tech House/Prog House/Electro House

I've been out of the loop for a while and going through my collection of CDs and stuff I just can't for the life of me think of what might be a good intro to this kind of music.

So far I'm thinking stuff like:

Sasha - Involver (First one)
Maybe some Justice
Some MSTRKRFT

For essential mixes I have absolutely no idea but I know there have been some truly mind blowing ones and I'd appreciate you guys suggesting some that fit my rather vague parameters.

Haha, I just posted this elsewhere, but I think Umek's Essential Mix is mind blowing. Techno = yum.

Then again often trance is the most accessible to people just starting to get into EDM so you might want to start with that.

My friend actually thinks trance is kind of shit. So I don't want to start off with trance.

Have him listen to Steve Mac;s EM from last year. It really has a touch of everything house and techno in there that;s why I like it so much.

Give him some chillout mixes. Corentin's ambient mixes are f*cking amazing..I highly recommend them. My brother who has never listened to EDM loved these when I put them on his ipod.

People new to electronic music don't like techno or ambient, and certainly not psy-trance without vocals or cheesy guitars. They like relatively un-repetitious tracks with structures that are nevertheless simplistic (i.e intro, chorus, break, chorus, refrain, chorus, outro) and usually vocals.

People who've spent their whole life listening to rock, hip-hop or pop are used to plenty of vocals, little repetition and obvious, in-your-face melodies that are catchy and extremely recognisable, which is why songs like Children and Sandstorm became so popular despite a lack of lyrics.

If your friend is a rock fan, I'd start him off on Hot Chip, Boyz Noise or Justice as you already suggested. If he's into other stuff at the moment or is more willing to dive headlong into electronic music, commercial house music is very approachable. Axwell, Daft Punk, Mylo, Linus Loves, Calvin Harris and Ian Carey would all work well in this respect. From here he'll be able to discover other things and gain a slow appreciation of more repetitive and subtle music.

edit: as the guy above said, big beat and stuff of that ilk is also good. Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx, The Prodigy, Underworld etc.

This, basically. This was the kind of music that got me into the EDM, so it must work a little bit

Thanks fellas, and it isn't a him it's a her. I suspect that changes things actually.

It'd be nice to know what she likes already, so there's something to work from. I don't see any reason to force it by administering certain albums. Just work from what she already likes and think about what she'd naturally progress to.

Danny Howells' 2007 EM or his GU:Miami.

Those should melt her panties off.

Another panty melter is Desyn's set from Club Home, Budapest from 2006. Listen to it with her while doing some drinks, and she should be jumping your bones by the time Golfclub - Spandex (Ian Carey Remix) hits, if not sooner

It's all downhill from there. It's so exciting when one of your friends wants to get into EDM!

Haha, for sure. I've made a lot of 1 time cds for friends who would generally say they liked it for certain times, but not much more. (though most of these cds were made when I only listened to trance).

As for the tunes definatly The Freemasons I would say. Vocal house that is also very upbeat and bouncy.

I would suggest make her a CD of about 10 hand picked tracks. Mix it up a little bit, but not too much. About 6 with vocals, and the others non-vocal tracks, maybe some melodic progressive house (ie: Digital Witchcraft - Fingerpaint). And then of course with any luck a music connection is made and suddenly you think that chick is way hotter and you have something to bond on. ohhhh yeeea.

Yeah, even Paris Hilton likes Sinclair (sic).

Posted by elFreak on Apr-09-2009 13:17:

yeah, danny pretty much plays everything, go with that to give her a broader scope.

grab the 10 hour arc set.

Posted by PETRAN on Apr-09-2009 13:20:

What kind of music does she like now?

Posted by Zak McKracken on Apr-09-2009 13:27:

give her some angello lol. fits with a girlie attitute.

Posted by elFreak on Apr-09-2009 13:31:

I find it really really funny that many of you automatically associate being a woman with liking garbage like Bob Sinclair.

Believe it or not, there are way more girls with good musical tastes then those drunken club quims whistling to love generation and flashing their snatches to cellphone cams for drinks.

Sexist bastards
