Minibar: The Self-Serve Nightclub

| Minibar: The Self-Serve Nightclub April 6, 2009 ![]() Minibar, a new concept that recently opened in Amsterdam that offers a solution to the frustrations of ordering a drink at a crowded bar. The owners did away with the bartender all together and instead allow customers to serve themselves from one of 45 private mini-bars. They wanted the experience to be more like inviting your friends to hang out in a hip hotel room, than standing in line waiting for a drink at a regular bar. Once inside, you check in with the concierge, they give you a key to your own fridge and then you serve yourself. A credit card or ID card left at the front desk is reclaimed after payment of the tab. The interior was designed by Amsterdam firm Concrete who made the wall of mini-bars the focal point of the space. The alcohol may be separated, but within the interior Concrete wanted the seating to encourage conversation and interaction. A long stepped sofa provides seating for separate groups of people while still keeping the space open. |
That's fuckin' sik! I wonder if you have to make reservations or something, b/c surely as soon as the "mini-fridges" run out...no more parties can come in until they have more keys left. I wish that was there when I was summering there.
lol very cool concept, it's like a house jam mixed with a night club/lounge. Gets rid of tipping a bartender and waiting like 5-10 minutes for a drink. And saves the club money by not staffing bartenders. Win-win.
So if they only have 45 mini bars does that mean that only 45 groups can come in? Not that 45 groups is a little amount... but if you wanted to go to this place one night you would probably have to organize yourself into a group or something...
This sounds good in theory but who knows how it works in practice...
I wonder how many "men down" (dropped drinks) there would be nearing the end of the night. Sloppy drinkers...sloppy self-bartenders lol!
That being said, kind of a cool idea. Reminds me of Kramer's Bake-Your-Own-Pie concept
those fridges look sick! i hope to one day have half that wall!!
Personally, I think its a good idea for a social club but not for a bar. The legal liability of allowing people to basically serve themselves as much alcohol as they want scares me. I can imagine the bill at the end of a night of hard drinking.
