The Don Jail - Toronto's Coolest New Venue

For 6 months this summer my friends are going to be managing The Old Don Jail for various events. I'm not sure if they would be able to do a late night party there but it would be an amazing space for a party.

Check out some of the pictures from Urban Exploration if you haven't before.

Search "The Don Jail" on Facebook for their group.

For a limited time this summer, the historic Old Don Jail will be open to the public for the first time ever. Its new owner, Bridgepoint Health, is offering event organizers an exclusive opportunity to experience the 145-year-old buildings powerful history.

From April to September 2009, the Old Don Jail is available as a venue for select private and corporate events. After that, the historic building will be renovated and become part of Bridgepoints new hospital and research facility.

Built in 1864, the Old Don Jail is one of the oldest buildings in Canada. It was an active prison until 1977. Since then, very few people have seen this extraordinary venue.

Despite its storied past or perhaps because of it the building is incredibly well-preserved. It is gritty and authentic. Although it will be thoroughly cleaned, it will not be renovated prior to opening as a venue, remaining true to its roots as an early example of Victorian industrial design.

Every inch holds a story of Canadas history and for the first time, many of those tales can now be told.

From their entry through massive front doors and under the ominous Father Time keystone, to the soaring architecture of the four storey central atrium and the surprisingly intimate Governors apartment, your guests will undergo an almost surreal experience as they retrace the steps of Torontos most notorious prisoners.

Whether you are hosting a corporate event, private party, fashion show or any other imaginable occasion, your guests will be talking about your venue for days.

This unique event venue is only available for six months. Dont miss your opportunity to step back in time and make history with your event!

It's no Alcatraz, but it looks cool.

Having a party there at night might be cool though.

Not every room has high ceilings and it would be hard for one of events but not impossible. One of the best (if not the best sound) I have ever heard was in Berghain and the ceilings are much higher and the room much bigger than this.

I'd love to check out the Don Jail...quite imposing. a friend from high school's uncle worked there for years and had some interesting stories, lol.

I went last September. Alcatraz is a pretty cool site and the history behind it is interesting. I'd highly recommend trying to go at night though, if you can (book early, it fills up).

we went during the day and it was still cool to see, but the vibe at night would be 10x creepier, I think

oh man i'd love to have an opportunity to check this place out. i went to and old prison in philadelphia a couple of years ago called Eastern State Penitentiary, and it was really cool.

mmm i doubt you guys would be bringing in a custom funktion 1 system at a price tag of a few million dollars to rectify the situation as was done in berlin

btw i am not saying it does not look like a cool venue.

I already bought tickets. I'm going during the day. I know going at night would probably be creepier, I'd rather go during the day so I can see the island and the view of the city better. I'll have my fair share of creepiness when I go to the Winchester Mansion!

this would be way too much for me.

as for the acoustics, if they were able to throw a party in a freaking mall in montreal, they could do a jail.

Probably not a Fucktion One 6.1 system but depending on the rooms it might not be as bad as one thinks. I actually haven't seen any of it yet(hoping to get a tour soon), and I don't know if my friends would be open to the kind of events I would kill to see there.

Toronto needs more stuff like this so here's hoping.

oh my! that reeks of dark techno.

I hope someone does an event there. If it was in Hamilton, I'd be all over that.

Im not a big techno fan but id go just for the vibe in that venue

We should hold the TranceAddict Anniversary party there.

i've been saying it for years...

good house music should scare you...and this is the right venue for it.

I dunno about that...

I was here last night (Steve Rachmad, Derrick May, Billy Nasty, Ben Sims, James Ruskin all playing classic bangers from around 1997 - 2002):

...for another Awakenings jam and for being in a steel tank with really high ceilings, there's no sound-bounce or anything. Yes, they spend serious coin on their sound rig for each event but it can be done.
