Deadmau5 review

I didnt go but here is a video uploaded by the man himself of his new track Soma

So... how was it??

Posted by flavor on Apr-11-2009 19:19:

Was a fun nite! Was relaly kewl for me to see Joel playing a venue of this size since the last time I saw him play was about 2 years ago when people were still saying "dead who?" in a TINY little spot to a crowd of about 15.... things sure have changed!

The "band" that was on before him was NOT my thing lotsa people there seemed to like it.....

Place was CROWDED, like VERY crowded and was about 80% kids that were like 16....*stab me*

Joel's set was really good, played a good mix of old and new stuff and definitely kept the crowd interested. AND he finally wore the mau5 head thingy AND saw more glowsticks then I have EVER seen in my entire life!!

Highlight of the nite: some cracked out 16 year old standing beside me going on about how she is so in love with Joel and that she understands his music like no one else can and if only she could just talk to him about it....bahahahahaha amazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzing!

Anyone have a copy of the full mix?

First time seeing Joel and he sure did not let me stop moving from start to finish the only downfall was that it was an all ages party which is why it prob ended at 4.. Not sure if Carlo even played ?? If he did it was right at 9 before the bands came on

Joel's quite the showman..I liked the track selection. The only thing I found was that at times it was a bit dragging from one track to the next..

Video coming up soon

now on to DAY 3

for anyone else who felt violated that he called that track 'soma'.

Man, in all honesty, you didn't miss anything. It was a really a middle of the road performance. A couple great moments, Safari (Holden Remix) included, but overall, just a rock concert with an EDM headliner. I don't know anyone out of the 12 people I attended with, who left saying positive things. It just felt like it was trying to straddle two realities, rather than just embracing one and going into it fully.

I will say this, I'd love to have seen him not at an all ages event, and playing in a place like Footwork. He would have rocked it with his nice technical style of techno house. For a time, he had me hooked. I can tell that he just wants to get into a deep vibe, something more than "I remember" and "brazil", but in order to appease the crowd, has to drop them at random moments that just don't work.

Tracks like "Bye friend" and "Sometimes Things Get Whatever" were banging. Bye Friend is such an evil, wonderful track and I could have done well with a similar vein all evening. Its just too bad that the night was so disconnected with the spirit of an electronic music event (with the rock bands on prior). I think Joel should connect with the people who really love the music, and not the DJ worshippers, and that will end up sustaining his career. All the rest will follow.

Hit Footwork Joel - that'd be rediculously off the hook.

His last set a Footwork rocked my socks off! lol

Would've liked to attend this event, but the last couple Deadmau5 sets i've been just haven't been that impressive, and mostly because the crowd ruins the atmosphere...

Hopefully he comes back to Footwork though soon!

PS. We need Joel to put some more of his live Cam sets on for us from his house haha...I was just thinking about those the other day!

This sums up Deadmau5's set nicely....

I'm glad he played some new tracks I hadn't heard yet. For the most part I really enjoyed his set.

Unfortunately the rest of the event for me, was a bit of a let down. We got there around 11 and for the first hour or so there wasn't even a dj, just a recording of some tech house (was this supposed to be Carlo-Lio's performance??) WTF??

Wasn't feeling the band AT ALL... I should have looked into the rest of the line-up before going.

Also, I'm guessing the usual guv bouncers/security were taking care of the hip-hop side of the club, because whoever they hired for koolhaus were assholes and I've never had a problem with guv staff before.

yeah I agree, he plays pretty cheesey to appease the crowd but he did have moments where it was soooo dark and I was totally digging it... anyhoo I got there at like 2am and it was free so can't complain..
