Internet Jamsession, April 14th: Sixofour, Cybernetika, MysticalNinja, Slug9 (70 min)

So we had a nice jamsession the last day, consisting of sixofour aka cronodevir, mystical.ninja, me and Slug9.

We did this jamsession via VSTunnel, a tool for online collaborations. This tool syncs the audio of all people participating. This is why even if people work with different BPM in their host, they will stay in sync.
It works really well for these jamsessions.

So we started with DnB, then moved to downtempo, and finished with trippy minimal techno.

Sorry the audio is cut off every 5 minutes, I can only record 5 minutes of audio with Edison in a row, then have to start a new recording.
I will record future jamsessions with audacity, that should work better.

so the download link is here:

enjoy!

how does it work? would it work with live instruments as well over the net?

Posted by cronodevir on Apr-16-2009 00:21:

Well, if you can get a live instrument to go through your master you can.

VSTunnel is an FX you add to your master [or any channel you want to send] and what ever goes through it is synced up on everyone else machine. So if you had a guitar hooked up to an amp then to say your pc [or however it works] and it went through the master or which ever channel has vstunnel, then yeah live instruments could work, or if you have a mic and it goes through vstunnel.

that wasn't what i meant... maybe i asked wrong, i mean if this thing goes really live? if i make say, a synth go filter up/down would the others hear it at that instant (or a minute later or something)? or is it like uploading loops of recorded stuff to a server?

Posted by cronodevir on Apr-16-2009 01:04:

its live

When ever i press random keys people hear, now, how long it takes for them to hear who knows, but its a matter of milliseconds i think.

want to try it? give a room anme and i'll join

Listening now...

Like what I'm hearing, so far, too!

Could you please write "jam session" as two words, the first few times I saw the title I thought the thread was about Jenna Jameson.

It's safe to say that Jenna Jameson might get a little creeped out after the first train-wreck with a child saying "I made a mistake" repeatedly.

(I'm not critiquing. But I did flash back to some very unpleasant memories as a result of listening to it.)

The vocal samples were in large part my working. I was just messing around with them :P

Posted by mysticalninja on Apr-16-2009 08:11:

yeh those be my dnb drum !! lol, at first anyway and i try to play some virus bass notes and arps in key but phail. my VSTunnel crapped out around the end of the dnb sesh, i was just listening for the rest. VSTunnel seems to get slightly fussy with my setup sometimes. but it's still awesome. there needs to be as many rooms for this as there are counterstrike servers. fun would never end.

Much appreciated

Some pretty neat stuff in here (and some pretty crazy parts).

So, just to get an idea of how it works... everything is live? So, you guys essentially try to beatmatch everything live?

Posted by cronodevir on Apr-16-2009 20:20:

If by beatmatch you mean sync everything..no its already in sync...syncing isn't an issue unless you purposely play for instance a sample at 3/4 while everyone is at 4/4.

I'm on now by myself, public channel sixofour, i'm working on my own track so you can lsiten but you you play anything I will mute you :P

So it detects the tempo of everything similar to the way Traktor does for DJing? What about things that aren't very percussive? Or playing "live"? In other words, if I start playing the piano, is it going to try to quantize or adjust the tempo of my playing?

edit - and, I appreciate the offer, but I'm at work right now.

Posted by david.michael on Apr-16-2009 20:52:

er, I think I get it. Does your individual DAW just play/loop at a tempo set by vstunnel and ignore the DAW's "master" tempo, and anything played on a MIDI keyboard would just play in realtime?
