Footballs top 50 worst signings ever

Inspired by this - http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/...wsstory.sport16 I propose (and Vern agrees ) that we try & do the top 50 worst signings ever in football.

Suggestions

Andriy Shevchenko Milan > Chelsea
Helder Postiga Porto > Spurs
Darren Bent Charlton > Spurs £17 million
Fabrice Muamba Birmingham > Bolton £5million
Michael Ricketts Bolton > Middlesboro £4.5million

add yours & I'll update

Pennant to Liverpool

Brazilian "defender" rafael scheidt that signed for celtic a few years back under barnes/dalglish.

Awful, just awful. There was suggestions at the time that the only reason he got a cap was because his agent was putting pressure on the brazil coach at the time to play him so he looked a better prospect for unsuspecting european teams, after a few games it looked like this was true. sheidt by name, shite by nature.

Juan Veron by United - wasnt that bad but terrible considering the price tag he had to justify

Kleberson by United - rumours had it that we bought the wrong kleberson. Wouldnt be surprised if that turned out to be true.

Djemba Djemba by United

Jose Reyes by Arsenal

Julio Baptista by Real Madrid

The entire newcastle squad by Mike Ashley

vern & myself were agreeing on the first 2. somehow forgot the 3rd

Add to it

Matieu Berson - £4 million by Aston Villa. Voted their player of the season for I think 2005 or 2006.. he was out on loan in spain at the time!

Sergei Rebrov - Kyiv to Spurs £12million

Dave Nugent to Spurs/Portsmouth
Pavel Pobryniak or whatever his name is to Spurs

Posted by Ian on Apr-16-2009 21:41:

Nugent, perhaps. Pavlyuchenko, not at all, he's scored over 10 goals so far & russians always find it hard to settle in. However as he's a spurs player, he'll remain in consideration

To add a few suggestions

Kevin-Prince Boateng (to spurs)
Alan Hutton (to spurs)
Chris Sutton - Blackburn to Chelsea
Kluivert - to Milan
Henry - to Juventus

etc

Beckham to galaxy - failed to meet expectations both in terms of performance on the pitch as well as having not having much of an impact on the popularization of football in the wes-sayeed

Lucas to Liverpool
Future space reserved for - Lucas to wherever he transfers

If this thread isnt referring to the signing of only players , id throw in Mclaren as coach of england and Sounness as coach of Newcastle.

I'd disagree on the beckham/galaxy one. He's done ok but is proof that in football one man doesn't make a team. People are signing from meidocre british clubs for MLS clubs & that's testament to the lack of quality in the league.

Lucas may yet fill that role, but until he's no longer just potential & becomes unfulfilled, then judgement should be reserved.

You have a point regarding the Beckham case and I was just messing around with the Lucas one.

Another one that comes to mind:

Mateja Kezman to Chelsea

indeed. Could perhaps add

Afonso Alves - Herenveen > Middlesboro £12million

He's shown one or two glimpses of quality but mostly flattered to deceive.

Does Diego Forlan count too? I dunno how much united paid for him, and I feel bad mentioning him because he worked his ass off, probably trying way too hard, but still didn't do much.

robbie keane to liverpool
i dont know if it was a stupid signing at the time but what they did after they signed him was stupid.

Posted by Yohan on Apr-17-2009 15:27:

speaking of chelski screw ups, does Scott Parker, Damien Duff and Crespo count?

Posted by Yohan on Apr-17-2009 15:28:

Michael Owen to Newcastle

Parry signed him & told benitez to play him. Rafa proved in his own way that he wouldn't so they took their losses on him (knowing spurs they paid more to get him back) and it went from there. Now Parry is leaving so Rafa can bring in who he wants and from next year on it truly will be 'his' team, and that's what he wants to be judged on, so we shall see.

Totally. Sometimes your skill sets are not suitable for a particular league. He was garbage for us but look how well he did at villareal and now at Atletico Madrid. The fact that he didnt lose belief in his talents after 2 sub par years after joining a new club - something that has destroyed the career of so many great players lends even credibility to his professionalism.

I would also add Alan Smith to that list when United bought him from leeds.

Some others that sprung to mind

Morientes from Valencia to Liverpool

Djibril Cisse from Auxerre to Liverpool

Kieron Dyer from Newcastle to West Ham

Jean Alain Boumsong from Rangers to Newcastle

Khalid Boulharouz from Hamburg to Chelsea

Francis Jeffers from Everton to Arsenal - surprised no one bought this one up yet

Totally agree lol

Have to say you're wrong about Beckham to Galaxy though. That was the second most brilliant thing the Galaxy could have done...first most being to get rid of Donovan, but that won't happen

Anelka to Real Madrid

Poulsen To Juventus

Tiago To Juventus

Mancini To Inter

Shevchenko To Chelsea

Benjani to City

Utaka to Portsmouth

Utaka was one hell of a player in France, now he's like a dead man...nowhere to be seen

Ronaldinho to AC Milan

A Bright start, and now he's nowhere to be seen

Menez To Roma

Simone Loria to Roma

and The Top Flop - DARIO KNEZEVIC To JUVENTUS

When you fight off Torino to sign a 26-year-old defender from a team who finished bottom of the league and conceded 60 goals, you are not buying quality. Luciano Moggi said it best when he sniped after a 2-1 defeat to Napoli, "Who is this guy who partners Giorgio Chiellini in defence? Kne...kze... I cannot even bring myself to pronounce his name. He is at best an average player and should be plying his trade in Serie B.”
