Can anybody here tell me if I'll actually be able to get 5.5MS transfer rates with the Velociraptor on that motherboard?

Shame to put all that RAM to waste running on XP

Posted by Adam420 on Apr-17-2009 00:35:

Didn't really think of that, but I guess I'll have to wait to get the full benefits once the next Windows OS comes out. I can always upgrade but I rather not.

Anyway do you happen to know about the HDD thing?

Not sure, sorry mate.

Posted by dimadelux on Apr-17-2009 00:46:

now why did you buy a copy of XP, everyones nows that its cooler to pirate it

Posted by Adam420 on Apr-17-2009 00:49:

ahah I've pirated it up until now I figured it's time to settle down and buy it

It just saves me headaches I want absolutely no compatibility issues whatsoever

Looks like a very powerful machine you got there. I'm not sure about the HDD but I'm pretty sure Ben will have an answer for you when he sees this thread

The average transfer rate is about 70 MB/sec. The seek times are in the 5ms range.

btw are you planning on overclocking the snot out of the cpu because that's one of the most expensive air coolers in the market. You could use a cooler that cost half as much and still get great thermal performance.

did someone say velociraptor?

Excellent question!

Not now, but at least I'll have the option. honestly I didn't know, I just thought I needed that one for this processor.

Posted by shadow_419 on Apr-17-2009 02:11:

I've heard they run a little hot when overclocked but not that bad. The stock cooler is definitely not up to cooling an overclocked i7 but there are cheaper alternatives than the thermalright. Don't worry though you'll be more than happy with that cooler.

Posted by dimadelux on Apr-17-2009 02:27:

btw how much did you spend on all that?

Posted by Adam420 on Apr-17-2009 02:30:

About 2200 CDN shipped, taxed and insured. Not counting the mail-in rebates I'll get. from NCIX.com

That's going to be a win system, but you need to run vista. Too bad you didn't put Solid State Disks in it, because you probably could have with your budget. What are you going to do with it?

Posted by Adam420 on Apr-17-2009 03:34:

do you mean i have no choice but to run vista?

Posted by Adam420 on Apr-17-2009 03:49:

Ok I realized I need to call them tomorrow and upgrade to XP X64 and I'm good.

It would have made it a ton faster, but those Velociraptors are blazing fast, I'm running a 74 Gig right now. Wish I could get those really expensive ones, but I'm a cheap computer nerd

Posted by Adam420 on Apr-17-2009 04:02:

Ok shit so I was talking about it with a friend. basically I plan to use ProTools, so I'm gonna keep the 32 bit OS because the program doesn't work with any 64 bit OSs. Anyway I guess I'll have to wait to get the full benefits of the memory.

Posted by Zeiter on Apr-17-2009 15:59:

I heard Acer screens suck!

Posted by Cloudburst on Apr-17-2009 16:08:

Uh so with a 32bit OS you'll only be able to use 3GB RAM (4GB minus memory allocations from GFX etc). That's 50% of what you have.

Posted by Adam420 on Apr-17-2009 17:02:

Yea I know but pro tools doesn't run on a 64 bit os so the 6 gigs of ram will have to wait to fully be exploited.

I'm running 2 raptors in raid 0. These drives are worth every penny!!

Posted by Zild on Apr-17-2009 17:10:

Maybe I should check into faster drives. I've never had any problems with 7200s but I guess you don't know until you try better.
