Posted by attacc on Jun-16-2002 15:24:

"WHO COULD GO TO JAIL?

You, if you're one of the millions of Americans who uses your computers to burn music CD's, listen to MP3's, share video files, etc. You'd face up to five years in federal prison and a $500,000 fine."

They can't jail millions of people..

Besides, jailing all those who pirated would cost soceiety a lot more than what piracy do.

This is bollocks

That would be illegal

What the senators haven't though of, though, is that it is nigh on impossible to create such PoliceWare in reality. Let's say it monitors avi- and mp3-files, how long will it take, before a new format emerges using the same kind of technology? Weeks at most, and you really cannot cover your ass against future file-formats. That is, unless you create certificates of some sort to go along with each file in order to make it useable - in which case your current software is rendered useless and development of new software in privat homes will be impossible.

Oh Petrus: I think europeans laughed when McDonald's, rap and talkshows appeared in the US as well. Look where we are today

dude don't worry, A bill like that would never pass, no senator in their right mind would want to piss off 75% of the voters in their state, lol.

you definately wouldnt see those senators return after election time lol.

Posted by JohnSmith on Jun-17-2002 04:53:

Well, i live in canada too, but the arrogance of this bill outrages me. just read this:

quote:
(1) the standard security technologies are --
(A) reliable;
(B) renewable;

(C) resistant to attack;

(D) readily implemented;

(E) modular;

(F) applicable in multiple technology platforms;

(G) extensible;

(H) upgradable;

(I) not cost prohibitive; and

(2) any software portion of such standards is based on open source code.

(c) ENCODING RULES. --

(1) LIMITATION ON THE EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS OF COPYRIGHT OWNERS. -- In achieving the goal of promoting as many lawful uses of copyrighted works as possible, while preventing as much infringement as possible, the encoding rules shall take into account the limitations on the exclusive rights of copyright owners, including the fair use doctrine.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10

(2) PERSONAL USE COPIES. -- No person may apply a security measure that uses a standard security technology to prevent a lawful recipient from making a personal copy for lawful use in the home of programming at the time it is lawfully performed, on an over-the-air broadcast, premium or non-premium cable channel, or premium or non-premium satellite channel, by a television broadcast station (as defined in section 122 (j)(5)(A) of title 17, United States Code), a cables system (as defined in section 111(f) of such title), or a satellite carrier (as defined in section 119(d)(6) of such title).
(f) MEANS OF IMPLEMENTING STANDARDS. -- The security system standards adopted under subsection (b), (c), or (g) shall provide for secure technical means of implementing directions of copyright owners for copyrighted works.

and then, this is the worst part:

quote:
(a) IN GENERAL. -- A manufacturer, importer, or seller of digital media devices may not --

(1) sell, or offer for sale, in interstate commerce, or
(2) cause to be transported in, or in a manner affecting, interstate commerce,

a digital medial device unless the device includes and utilizes standard security technologies that adhere to the security system standards adopted under section 3.

so, if it isn't government approved hardware, you can't buy or sell it! what a joke!

and they say it has to be open source? ha... good luck trying to get windows to be open source.

and linux users will NEVER stand for this.

this will never pass, and if it does.. well.. this is one stupid world.

Posted by davinox on Jun-17-2002 04:57:

it's BS.

it'll never happen.

Posted by Blue. on Jun-17-2002 18:07:

There would most likely become a way to disable it without the governments knowledge or a way around it. Anyways they aren't touching my computer :P. All I'd do is download MP3's, transfer them to another computer without that shit and use them there or use the net to download it to that computer and use the other one for other net purposes. They won't do it anyway though :P, better not anyways.
