Rythm x Bass routings...

Hey friends, I can't find my definitive routings for bass and rythm pieces...

I'm looking for a clean sounding and experimenting some ideas of the Dance Music Manual book...

I like the way of compressing kick + bass in one bus to gel these low frequencies together with my Sonalksis SV315mk2 compressor, they sound very defined and warm, but, after this I can't route back my "kick only" to the drums bus because the bass is with it and will destroy my rythm dynamics on that bus...

So, I need the kick back to my drums bus to pump the hi-hats with a compressor (to also create that effect of when kick stops, hi-hats pull up in volume...) But I can't figure out how to do...

Any ideas? What are your routings for rythm pieces and bass?

I'm on Logic 8

tks

Copy the kick to the rhythm bus, apply the compressor, turn the volume on the kick all the way down and use pre-send fader on the channel to activate the compressor on the kick.
Then the kick will be silent but the compressor would still be active on the kick.

Never done what u do there, but it could work i guess.

So, what are your routings?

I do not use any, i apply everything i need on each channel separately.

I've read the dance music manual as well, and it's quite informative. However, I'm not that fond of compressing kick and bass together, I never do that in any of my tracks.

Just follow what Subtle said, and you'll be fine!

This information is in Part 2 (Dance Genres), Chapter 12 (Trance), page 260 of Dance Music Manual Second Edition...

Theran, do you compress your kick in a drum bus along with hats, clap, crash...?

It's good sometimes explain everyone approachs to a clean final result...

I will look into that tonight.

Yeah I do, but not with all the percussion sounds, I, for instance, don't route the crash to that bus. Because below the compressor, I have a highpass filter which is automated to slowely filter out the drums, and I don't want that to be done on my crash.
But yeah, most of my percussion (almost everything) goes thru the same compressor as the kick.

that's what i do as you have more control on each sound.

but i do route perc's through a bus.

Actually I've been toying around with routing options myself at the moment.

Generally, I just use one bus but for really layered projects I have two different buses for perc: HiPerc and loPerc. That lets me compress and eq in different ways and you can still use the redundant kick trick as the sidechain trigger so they both pump but with different settings/dynamics.

The tricky bit is getting them to pump and sit together but I find subtlety is critical with the comps, and eq is the tool to get them to sit together.

One question" how do you guys work with loops in this way? Do make them part of the perc bus or have a separate loop bus or just have them discrete?

Also, just getting to grips with logic after years on cubase (and I love logic now) but how do you make sub groups in logic (separate channels all with different levels controlled relatively to each other by just one fader).

I compress similar sounds together, as others seem to do also based on the replies so far. I don't compress the kick and bass together, but haven't tried it so won't knock it.

All hats I route through a single compressor.
Kick is compreesed alone
Clap is compressed alone if required.
Crash cymbals and reversed crash cymbals routed to a single compressor
Individual melodies compressed alone

Some things not compressed at all, good mixing does the job. Just use your ears

Subtle your idea doesn't make sense...
if a compress and audio material mixed with silence only the material will be compressed.
I think you're talking about sidechain hats with the kick... i'm talking about compress every drum piece together and make it pump drastically if needed...

Theran did you looked at the book last night?

Prototrance I'm looking to pump all the elements during the mix stage... Well, the gain pumping is actually activated on the master channel with a Fet compressor, but I need extra pump in drums... If you make everything separated I don't think it will pump so much...

It makes sense only if you do not want to compress the kick twice.

From the looks of it, you might want to maybe ditch the kick+bass compressing combo, or maybe render the compressed bass to audio by using the pre-fader send, and then put the kickdrum into the "drum bus" either way you will lose the compressor settings on the kick.
Unless you maybe copy the compressor settings or something.

Complicated stuff, best i could come up with
